Short answer: In Cursor, browser automation is connected through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Use Cursor’s built-in browser for a quick, integrated workflow; add Playwright MCP when you need structured page interaction, screenshots, network and console inspection; or use Chrome DevTools MCP when an agent must inspect a live Chrome session. Start on a non-sensitive page, keep approvals enabled, and connect an existing signed-in browser only when the task genuinely requires it.
What MCP browser automation adds to Cursor
MCP is Cursor’s integration route for external tools and data sources. An MCP browser server gives Cursor’s Agent tools to navigate pages, inspect content, click controls, enter text and collect diagnostics instead of relying only on generated code.
The practical choice depends on the job:

There is no universal winner. Choose based on whether you need a clean, isolated browser or your current profile, how much debugging information you need, and what authenticated data the agent may reach.
Option 1: Cursor’s built-in browser
Cursor documents a browser pane that the Agent controls through MCP tools. It is the lowest-friction route when your Cursor edition exposes the feature: open the browser pane from the Agent workflow, navigate to your test URL, and ask the Agent to inspect or operate the page. Browser logs and screenshots can help diagnose rendering problems.

Control navigation exposure
Cursor provides allow and block lists. Some deployments can enable an origin allowlist so automatic navigation and MCP tool use are limited to approved origins. Treat this as a reduction in exposure, not a complete sandbox: links, redirects and JavaScript navigation can reach another origin. Cursor describes its allow/block system as “best-effort protection.”
When the built-in browser is enough
- Checking a local development page or a public URL.
- Taking a screenshot while reviewing layout changes.
- Reading browser logs without configuring a separate MCP package.
For repeatable cross-browser work or richer diagnostics, configure Playwright MCP instead.
Option 2: Set up Playwright MCP in Cursor
Prerequisites
- Node.js 20 or newer.
- Cursor with MCP support.
- Network access for the first
npxpackage download, unless your environment already caches it.
Add the server through Cursor Settings
- Open Cursor Settings → MCP → Add new MCP Server.
- Choose the command server type.
- Enter
npx @playwright/mcp@latestas the command. - Save the server, then start a new Agent conversation and verify that Playwright tools are listed.

Make a first safe interaction
Use a public demo or a local test page rather than an account with production data. A useful first prompt is: “Navigate to the Playwright TodoMVC demo, report the page title and visible controls, then add three todo items and list the resulting items.” Ask the Agent to describe each action before it submits anything important.

Playwright MCP returns an accessibility snapshot: roles, text and stable element references. The Agent can use those references to click buttons, fill fields, select dropdown values, switch tabs and handle dialogs. It also documents keyboard and mouse actions, screenshots, console access, network-request inspection and mocking, and storage-state or cookie management.

Browser modes and code execution
The browser runs headed by default, so you can observe it. Playwright MCP supports Chrome, Firefox, WebKit and Edge. Its browser_run_code_unsafe capability executes arbitrary JavaScript in the Playwright server process and is effectively remote-code execution; enable it only for a trusted MCP client and trusted tasks. Leave it unavailable when ordinary structured actions meet your needs.
Attach Playwright to an existing browser
Launching a clean browser is safer and more reproducible. Attachment is useful when a test depends on an installed extension, an existing tab, SSO, 2FA or cookies that you cannot conveniently recreate.
Use a browser channel
Configure the server with --cdp-endpoint=chrome (or a supported Chrome or Edge channel). The Playwright documentation calls this the simplest attachment method because you do not need to provide a debugging port.

For Chromium with remote debugging, configure an endpoint such as http://localhost:9222. This approach can target Chrome, Chromium, Edge, Electron applications and some cloud-browser services. Protect the endpoint and keep it bound to a trusted interface; anyone who can reach it may gain browser control.
Use the browser extension
Install the Playwright extension in Chrome or Edge and start the MCP server with --extension. The extension is appropriate when you need existing tabs, installed extensions or an already authenticated SSO/2FA session. Limit the work to the tabs and accounts required for the task.

Chrome DevTools MCP for live-browser debugging
Google’s Chrome for Developers documents chrome-devtools-mcp for coding agents including Cursor. It is oriented toward DevTools workflows: the agent can inspect, debug and modify content in a live Chrome browser. This is valuable for diagnosing console errors, network failures, performance behavior or a page that only fails in your normal profile.
The trade-off is session power. Browser content is exposed to the agent, and an active authenticated session can allow actions on your behalf. Use a separate browser profile, sign out of unrelated services, and keep confirmation prompts enabled for account changes, purchases, deletion or data submission.
A safe operating procedure
- Start with a disposable target. Use localhost or a public demo with no private data.
- Keep approvals on. Review navigation, form submissions, file access and scripts before allowing them.
- Minimize credentials. Prefer a test account and a fresh profile. Do not paste API keys into prompts.
- Constrain origins. Configure Cursor’s controls where available, while remembering that redirects and script navigation can escape an allowlist.
- Separate observation from mutation. First ask for title, accessibility tree, console and network findings; only then request clicks or edits.
- Record evidence. Save screenshots, console output and the URL so a failure can be reproduced.
Cursor explicitly warns: “Never use auto-run mode with untrusted code or unfamiliar websites.” Treat that warning as a rule, not a suggestion.
Common problems and fixes
“npx” or Node version errors
Cause: Node.js is missing or older than 20. Fix: install Node.js 20 or newer, restart Cursor so its process sees the updated PATH, and run the server again.
The MCP server appears but has no tools
Cause: malformed JSON, a failed package download or a stale Cursor session. Fix: validate the configuration, run npx @playwright/mcp@latest once in a terminal to expose download errors, then restart the MCP connection or Cursor.

The Agent cannot find a button
Cause: the control is inside an iframe, hidden until a click, or poorly labelled. Fix: ask for a fresh accessibility snapshot, identify the frame or visible role and text, scroll into view, and wait for the relevant selector before clicking. Avoid coordinate clicks unless the page truly requires them.
Authentication disappears
Cause: a newly launched browser has no cookies or storage state. Fix: attach through a channel, CDP endpoint or extension, or provide a dedicated test storage state. Do not copy a personal profile into an untrusted environment.
CDP connection refused
Cause: Chrome was not started with remote debugging, the port is wrong, or a firewall blocks it. Fix: start a dedicated Chromium instance with a protected debugging endpoint, verify the endpoint locally, and ensure the configured URL matches exactly.
Navigation is blocked
Cause: an allowlist or enterprise MCP policy rejects the origin. Fix: add the required test origin through your organization’s approved settings, or use a local fixture. Do not disable controls globally just to bypass one page.
Actions are slow or flaky
Cause: the page is still loading, animations change the DOM, or the agent is repeatedly requesting large snapshots. Fix: wait for a specific selector or network idle, disable unnecessary animations in test CSS, capture only the needed element, and ask for focused diagnostics. Headed mode is easier to watch but may consume more desktop resources than an isolated headless run where supported.

Performance, reliability and cost considerations
- Reproducibility: a fresh Playwright browser with a pinned package version and test data is easier to reproduce than a personal profile.
- Coverage: Playwright’s Chrome, Firefox, WebKit and Edge support can reveal engine-specific defects; a live Chrome attachment only tells you about that session.
- State: cookies, local storage, extensions and SSO improve realism but increase security impact and make failures harder to isolate.
- Diagnostics: collect console and network information only when needed; large traces and screenshots increase response size and review time.
- Automation risk: never grant arbitrary JavaScript execution or auto-run to an untrusted site merely to save a few clicks.
