Jetpack Compose works naturally with an MVI-style architecture when the screen renders observable state, sends user actions upward, and a state holder processes those actions into new state. Android’s official guidance describes this as unidirectional data flow (UDF); it recommends the mechanics, not the MVI name or a particular MVI library.
How MVI-style data flow fits Compose
Compose UI is driven by state: a composable receives values and displays them, while callbacks communicate user actions. When the values change, Compose recomposes the affected UI. In the UDF pattern, state flows down to the UI and events flow up to a state holder. Android Developers explains that “Because composables accept state and expose events, the unidirectional data flow pattern fits well with Jetpack Compose.” Android Developers’ Compose UI Architecture guide describes this approach.
In an MVI-style design, the UI state is the screen’s current, renderable condition; user actions are events such as typing or tapping; and a state holder handles those events and exposes the resulting state. A ViewModel commonly fills that screen-level role. This makes the loop explicit without requiring a particular reducer, intent hierarchy, or library.
Define a screen state that describes what the UI can show
Model the information and meaningful conditions the screen needs to render. Keep state immutable where practical: composables receive a snapshot and ask for changes through callbacks rather than directly mutating state owned elsewhere.

For mutually exclusive conditions, a sealed type can make the possibilities clear. Android’s sign-in example distinguishes signed-out, in-progress, error, and signed-in states. For a content screen, the same principle could represent loading, content, and an error that includes information needed to explain or recover from the failure. Avoid collapsing distinct visible conditions into an ambiguous collection of booleans if that permits contradictory combinations.
Android’s Compose UI Architecture guide includes the sealed sign-in example. The state shape should follow what the screen must render, rather than a presumed MVI convention.

Keep screen-level state and event handling in a state holder
A ViewModel is a common owner for state that belongs to a screen and must outlive an individual composable call. It receives actions, applies the screen’s logic, and exposes observable state to the UI. Android’s architecture recommendations endorse UDF principles, observable UI state, and sending actions to the state holder through methods.
State can be exposed with options such as StateFlow or LiveData. The official guidance referenced here does not rank them or require one for MVI. Choose in line with the app’s existing architecture and needs; keep state changes behind the holder’s event-handling boundary.

The state holder should receive meaningful actions, such as a submit tap or a text edit, and publish the updated state the UI needs. It need not mirror every internal implementation detail in the composable API. The UI should have enough state to render and callbacks for the actions it can initiate.
Render state and send actions from composables
Separate a state-driven screen from the code that obtains and observes its state. A composable can take the current state and action callbacks as parameters, render from those values, and invoke a callback when a user acts. A screen-level caller connects that UI to the state holder and observes its current state using the appropriate Compose integration.

A typical connection looks like this conceptually:
- The state holder exposes the current screen state and handles actions.
- The screen observes that state and passes it into the UI.
- The UI renders the state and invokes callbacks for user actions.
- The callbacks pass those actions to the state holder, which emits updated state.
Text edits, taps, timers, and relevant external updates can all be treated as events when they affect the screen state. The important boundary is that the UI requests a change; the owner of the state decides how to update it. Android’s Compose UI Architecture guide and UI layer guidance explain the state-and-event loop.

Not every value belongs in a screen-level ViewModel. Put state where its owner and lifetime make sense. A local interaction detail may stay near the composable that uses it; state shared by multiple composables should be hoisted to their common owner; screen state that must be coordinated beyond a local composition can live in a state holder.

rememberretains a value while the calling composable remains in the composition.rememberSaveablecan preserve saveable values through configuration changes by storing them in a Bundle.- A caller or state holder is appropriate when the state must be shared, coordinated, or owned beyond one composable’s presence.
These options serve different lifetimes rather than competing as a single universal choice. Android’s Compose UI Architecture guide covers remembered state, and its state-hoisting guide explains moving state to callers or state holders.
Test transitions separately from rendering
Keeping state logic outside the UI makes it practical to test how actions change screen state separately from testing how the UI renders a given state. For example, state-holder tests can check that a submit action produces the expected loading or result condition; UI tests can check that the relevant state displays the appropriate content. Android’s Compose UI Architecture guide identifies testability and state encapsulation as benefits of separating state from the UI that displays it.
What MVI does—and does not—require here
MVI is a useful way to make the state/event loop explicit, but the cited Android guidance specifies UDF mechanics rather than prescribing an MVI architecture. It does not establish that MVI requires a single StateFlow, a reducer, a particular action class hierarchy, or a named library. Those are implementation choices, not requirements established by the official guidance.
For a Compose screen, the essential design decisions are who owns each piece of state, which meaningful UI conditions it represents, and how actions reach that owner. The official UI layer guidance and state-hoisting guidance provide the relevant UDF and ownership concepts.
