GitHub Copilot can draft tests, help add edge cases, and—in some configurations—edit files and run test commands. It cannot infer requirements you have not specified or prove that its tests are correct. Give it the behavior and project context, review the assertions, and run the result with your repository’s test runner.

Generate tests for existing code with Copilot Chat

  1. Open the function or file you want to test. If relevant, also open nearby test files so Copilot can see the repository’s conventions and framework.
  2. In Copilot Chat, select the relevant code or make the target file active. Ask it to generate tests; GitHub documents the /tests command for existing code.
  3. Specify the test framework and the behavior to verify. Include representative inputs and expected outputs, boundary conditions, and error cases.
  4. Review the proposed test source, make corrections, and save it in the appropriate test location.
  5. Run the tests with the project’s usual test runner and examine whether they check meaningful behavior.

For example, a request can name Jest and ask for tests covering an empty input, a typical valid input, a boundary value, and the expected error for invalid input. Adapt the framework and syntax to your repository; GitHub’s examples include Python unittest, and its IDE guidance shows Jest. See GitHub’s guide to writing tests with Copilot and its IDE prompting guidance.

Prompt for useful coverage, not just more test cases

A prompt works best when it gives Copilot a specification to check against, rather than asking it to guess what the code ought to do. State the intended behavior plainly, including what should happen for unusual inputs and failures. If the first answer misses the mark, add concrete input-and-output examples or clarify the requirement.

  • Behavior: describe the result the function or feature should produce.
  • Context: name the framework and relevant repository conventions.
  • Examples: provide representative inputs and their expected outputs.
  • Boundaries: request cases at important limits, including empty, minimum, maximum, or malformed values where applicable.
  • Failures: specify expected errors or failure handling.

Ask for unit, integration, mock-based, or end-to-end tests according to what you need to verify. The request should define the kind of behavior under test; generated tests still need review for correct setup, meaningful assertions, and missing scenarios.

Use Copilot for test-driven development

When writing tests before implementation, ask Copilot Chat to create tests without the /tests command. GitHub distinguishes this TDD request from generating tests for existing code. Describe the desired behavior and examples, review the proposed tests, and then implement code against those requirements.

Keep the tests tied to the specification rather than to a particular implementation. A test that merely mirrors how the current code is written may pass while failing to protect the behavior you care about.

Choose how much automation you want

Generating a test file in chat is an interactive, focused task. Broader automation can involve several files and commands, but availability and controls depend on the Copilot product, IDE, repository, and organization settings.

IDE agent mode

GitHub describes agent mode as a way to assign multi-step tasks that can edit files across a project and run commands. It can extend test work beyond a single suggestion, but review the changes and command results rather than treating the agent’s completion as verification. See GitHub’s IDE agent documentation.

Copilot app automations

Saved tasks in the Copilot app can run on demand or on a schedule. Cloud automation has repository and organization prerequisites, including access to cloud agent features and applicable policy settings. Check GitHub’s automation documentation for current availability and requirements.

GitHub Agentic Workflows

GitHub documents Agentic Workflows as a public-preview GitHub Actions approach that uses natural-language instructions for repository work, including improving test coverage. The documented workflow includes guardrails and human approval controls. Preview availability and behavior can change; consult the current Agentic Workflows documentation before relying on it.

Verify generated tests before trusting them

Run the test suite with the same command the project normally uses. GitHub’s Python example uses python -m unittest; use your project’s actual command for other frameworks.

  • Check that each assertion expresses an intended requirement, not an incidental implementation detail.
  • Confirm setup, mocks, fixtures, and expected values match the application’s behavior.
  • Look for missing boundary and error cases, especially those the prompt did not spell out.
  • Consider whether the tests would fail if the behavior regressed; a passing test that does not distinguish correct from incorrect behavior adds little protection.

Copilot’s documentation notes that basic functions can be easier to test with simple prompts, while complex scenarios need more detailed prompting, and generated tests may not cover every scenario. A generated test suite is not evidence by itself that the code is correct. GitHub recommends trials and measurement when introducing Copilot; evaluate outcomes in your own repository rather than assuming a productivity or quality gain from product examples. See GitHub’s testing-use-case guidance and its rollout measurement guidance.

The tests pass but do not check the requirement

Clarify the expected behavior with a concrete input and expected output. Rewrite assertions that simply reproduce the implementation or fail to distinguish a regression.

Important edge cases are missing

List the boundaries and error conditions explicitly in a follow-up prompt. Do not assume a request to “test thoroughly” identifies the domain-specific cases you need.

The proposed tests fail to run

Check the test command, framework setup, imports, fixtures, and mocks against the repository. Adapt examples from documentation to the project rather than copying a command or syntax intended for another framework.

If your test workflow also needs website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return an image or PDF; its clean-shot workflow accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes supported consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents.
