You can use ElevenLabs’ documented APIs for text-to-speech and speech-to-text from an Electron desktop app. The key design decision is where credentialed requests run: keep privileged work out of renderer JavaScript, expose only narrow operations through preload and IPC, and consider a backend for shared long-lived credentials. ElevenLabs documents the service APIs and Node.js library, but its reviewed documentation does not provide a complete, tested Electron app example.

How ElevenLabs and Electron fit together

ElevenLabs provides HTTP APIs and an official Node.js library for speech features. Electron adds a separate security boundary: the renderer displays the interface, while trusted code handles privileged work. A typical integration can route a renderer’s request through a deliberately small preload API and IPC channel to trusted code that calls ElevenLabs and returns only what the interface needs.

This is an architectural pattern, not a turnkey recipe verified by either product’s documentation. The right place for the credentialed request depends on the app’s threat model and how it is distributed. ElevenLabs text-to-speech API reference · Electron process model

Choose the speech workflow

Text-to-speech: return a complete response or stream audio

The text-to-speech endpoint accepts text and a voice ID, with model and output-format parameters. A full audio response suits an interface that can wait for the generated result before playing it. Streaming is an option when the app should begin handling audio before generation has finished. Supported models, formats, and plan restrictions can change, so use the current API reference when selecting them rather than baking assumptions into the app. Text-to-speech API reference · Text-to-speech capabilities

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Speech-to-text: transcribe a file or handle live speech

For recorded audio, ElevenLabs documents batch transcription: submit an audio file and choose options such as a model, language, or diarization. Realtime transcription is a separate path for live interactions. The app must still implement its own audio-capture flow; the reviewed ElevenLabs documentation does not give an Electron-specific microphone-permission recipe. Speech-to-text API reference

Path Best fit What the app must handle
Text-to-speech response Generate audio, then play or save the completed result. Request text, voice ID, and supported model and format options.
Text-to-speech streaming Begin handling audio while generation is underway. Consume the stream and integrate it with the app’s playback flow.
Batch transcription Transcribe an existing recording. Provide the audio file and selected transcription options.
Realtime transcription Transcribe live speech. Capture audio in the app and manage the live interaction and platform permissions.

Keep the API key out of renderer code

An API key is a credential, not a safe client-side setting. Do not place a privileged, long-lived key in renderer JavaScript or ship it as though desktop packaging made it secret. If a desktop app needs to use a shared credential, a backend-mediated design can keep that credential off the client. For other deployment models, evaluate the exposure and permissions of any credential the app uses rather than assuming a single architecture fits every application.

ElevenLabs discusses managed secret storage, workspace service accounts, key lifetimes, and resource-level access controls. Consult its API key security guidance to choose controls for your account and deployment.

Use Electron’s security boundaries deliberately

Expose a specific operation—such as requesting speech or submitting a transcription—rather than giving renderer content broad access to Electron APIs or unrestricted IPC. Electron’s contextBridge supports exposing selected functionality across the isolated context boundary. Validate IPC senders and constrain what each operation accepts and returns. Electron’s security documentation also calls for context isolation and sandboxing, careful navigation limits, restrictive content security policy, and appropriate permission handling for sessions that load remote content.

  • Keep context isolation and process sandboxing enabled.
  • Do not enable Node.js integration for remote content. Electron warns: “Under no circumstances should you load and execute remote code with Node.js integration enabled.”
  • Expose narrowly scoped preload methods, not the complete IPC API.
  • Validate IPC senders and limit navigation and permissions to what the app requires.
  • Use a restrictive content security policy and treat remote content as untrusted.

Follow Electron’s current security checklist and contextBridge documentation when implementing the boundary.

Plan microphone access separately from transcription

Speech-to-text APIs process audio; they do not remove the need for the desktop app to obtain it. For live transcription, the app must capture microphone input and handle the relevant platform permission flow. ElevenLabs’ reviewed documentation does not establish an Electron-specific permission setup, so do not treat an API example as a complete microphone implementation. A USB microphone is optional hardware for speech capture, not an ElevenLabs API requirement.
