Use a CSS selector to identify nodes in the HTML document tree, then use your scraping library to extract their text, attributes, or links. For example, article.product h2 finds headings inside product articles; it does not by itself return the heading text. Scrapy and Beautiful Soup both support this workflow, but their selector engines and extraction APIs differ. Test a selector against the same parsed response, parser, and library versions that will run in production.

What a CSS selector does in a scraper

A selector is a pattern matched against a parsed HTML tree. It can identify elements by tag name, ID, class, attributes, and relationships between nodes. The W3C Selectors Level 4 specification describes simple selectors, compound selectors, complex selectors, combinators, and selector lists: Selectors Level 4.

Selection and extraction are separate operations:

  • Selection: find one or more matching elements, such as article.product.
  • Extraction: read data from each match, such as descendant text, an href, or an image’s src attribute.

That distinction explains why a correct selector can still appear to “return nothing”: the query may have matched a node, while the subsequent text or attribute lookup found no value.

CSS selector building blocks

Tags, IDs, and classes

Pattern Matches
article Every <article> element
#main The element whose id is main
.product Every element with the product class
article.product An article that also has class product
article.featured.product An article with both classes

Do not put a space between conditions that apply to the same element. article.product means one element; article .product means a descendant with that class.

Relationships

  • article h2 selects any h2 descendant of an article.
  • article > h2 selects only an immediate child h2.
  • h2 + p selects a paragraph immediately following an h2.
  • h2 ~ p selects later paragraph siblings of an h2.

Attributes and selector lists

Attribute selectors target presence or values: input[name="email"], a[href^="https"] for an href beginning with https, and img[alt] for images that have an alt attribute. Separate alternatives with commas, for example h1, h2, h3. Keep selectors tied to stable attributes; presentation-only classes and generated IDs often change between deployments.

Using selectors with Scrapy

Scrapy exposes response.css() and response.xpath() shortcuts. Its selector stack uses Parsel with lxml underneath, so the installed Scrapy, Parsel, and lxml versions are part of the behavior. The current Scrapy selector documentation (version 2.17.0 when accessed on September 29, 2026) is at Scrapy Selectors.

Complete item-extraction example

import scrapy

class ProductsSpider(scrapy.Spider):
    name = "products"
    start_urls = ["https://example.com/products"]

    def parse(self, response):
        for card in response.css("article.product"):
            name = card.css("h2::text").get()
            link = card.css("a::attr(href)").get()
            yield {
                "name": name.strip() if name else None,
                "url": response.urljoin(link) if link else None,
            }

Scrapy’s ::text pseudo-element asks for text nodes, while ::attr(name) asks for an attribute. .get() returns the first result or None; .getall() returns every result as a list.

When a card contains nested text

for card in response.css("article.product"):
    description = " ".join(t.strip() for t in card.css(".description ::text").getall() if t.strip())
    image = card.css("img").attrib.get("src")
    yield {"description": description, "image": image}

Select the img element first, then query its src attribute. If an image uses lazy loading, inspect attributes such as data-src in the response rather than assuming src contains the URL.

Chaining and scope

Iterating over response.css("article.product") creates a selector scoped to each card. A query such as response.css("h2::text") at page scope can accidentally pair a heading from one card with a link from another. Scope every field to the record’s container.

Using selectors with Beautiful Soup

Beautiful Soup provides select() for all matches and select_one() for the first match on both BeautifulSoup and Tag objects. Current CSS support is implemented by Soup Sieve. The documentation identified as Beautiful Soup 4.14.3 on September 29, 2026 is at Beautiful Soup documentation.

Equivalent Python example

import requests
from bs4 import BeautifulSoup

html = requests.get("https://example.com/products", timeout=30).text
soup = BeautifulSoup(html, "html.parser")

for card in soup.select("article.product"):
    heading = card.select_one("h2")
    name = heading.get_text(" ", strip=True) if heading else None
    link = card.select_one("a")
    href = link.get("href") if link else None
    print({
        "name": name,
        "url": href,
    })

get_text(" ", strip=True) joins descendant text with spaces and removes surrounding whitespace. get("href") reads an attribute and returns None when the tag or attribute is absent. Normalize relative links with urllib.parse.urljoin when you need absolute URLs.

Multiple values and nested selection

for card in soup.select("article.product"):
    tags = [tag.get_text(strip=True) for tag in card.select("ul.tags li")]
    image = card.select_one("img")
    image_url = image.get("src") if image else None
    print(tags, image_url)

Soup Sieve supports the documented tag, ID, descendant, and attribute selector forms. If all you need is CSS selection, Beautiful Soup’s documentation notes that parsing with lxml directly may be faster; treat that as library guidance, not a universal benchmark, and measure your own input and workload.

Test selectors against the HTML your code actually parses

Browser developer tools are useful for drafting a selector, but the browser’s live DOM may not equal the HTTP response downloaded by your scraper. JavaScript can insert products after load, consent systems can replace markup, and an anti-bot response can contain an error page instead of the target document.

  1. Save or print the response body received by your scraper.
  2. Confirm the target element, class, attribute, and nesting exist in that body.
  3. Run the selector with the same parser and package versions used at runtime.
  4. Check the match count before extracting values.
  5. Inspect a matched node and its attributes when extraction is empty.

In Scrapy, log len(response.css("article.product")) and inspect response.text[:1000]. In Beautiful Soup, print len(soup.select("article.product")) and card.prettify() for one match. Selector support is an implementation detail as well as a syntax question: verify installed versions and test the exact engine in production.

CSS selectors versus XPath in Scrapy

CSS is usually the clearest choice for tags, classes, attributes, and ordinary parent-to-descendant relationships. Scrapy supports XPath as well as CSS, so use XPath when a query is naturally expressed as a path or needs XPath-specific capabilities. Compare readability, feature support in your chosen engine, and how easily the query exposes the value you need. Do not assume that a selector copied from a browser supports every form in every Python library.

Troubleshooting selectors that return no results

The response is not the page you inspected

Symptom: the browser shows products, but the selector count is zero. Fix: print the status code, final URL, response headers, and a slice of the body. Look for login, rate-limit, CAPTCHA, or bot-check HTML. A CSS selector cannot find elements that were never delivered to the parser.

The content is rendered by JavaScript

Symptom: the initial HTML has an empty container, while the browser later displays rows. Fix: identify the data endpoint and request it where permitted, or use a rendering workflow that produces HTML before parsing. A selector only queries the tree supplied to it; it does not execute page JavaScript.

The selector is too specific

Symptom: a minor class change breaks extraction. Fix: anchor on stable semantic elements or attributes, scope to a record container, and use a selector list only when the site genuinely has alternate markup. Avoid relying on a long chain of layout elements.

Text or attributes are missing

Symptom: cards match but names or URLs are None. Fix: inspect the matched HTML, account for nested text, and check alternate attributes such as data-src. In Scrapy use ::text or ::attr(); in Beautiful Soup use get_text() and get().

Parser or engine differences

Symptom: a selector works in one project but fails in another. Fix: check Scrapy/Parsel/lxml or Beautiful Soup/Soup Sieve versions, parser choice, and supported selector syntax. Build a small fixture containing the target HTML and run it in continuous tests.

Reliability, performance, and responsible operation

  • Fetch each page only as often as necessary; obey the site’s terms and applicable rules.
  • Set request timeouts, handle non-success responses, and record the URL and selector version with each extraction.
  • Prefer one scoped query per field over repeatedly searching the entire document.
  • Use .get() when a field is singular and validate that assumption; use .getall() or select() for collections.
  • Cache fixtures and test representative pages, including missing fields and alternate layouts.
  • When throughput matters, benchmark the parser and selector engine on your real documents. Documentation guidance is not a substitute for your workload’s measurements.

Or skip the browser setup:

If you need a clean screenshot of a page before inspecting or archiving its rendered output, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The API supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, device and viewport settings, dark mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting, and an OpenAPI specification. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a CSS selector read text by itself?

No. It identifies matching nodes; your library still needs a text method such as Scrapy’s ::text or Beautiful Soup’s get_text().

Why does a selector copied from browser DevTools fail in Scrapy?

The downloaded response may differ from the browser’s rendered DOM, or the selector syntax may not be supported by the installed Parsel/lxml stack. Test the actual response with that stack.

Should I use CSS or XPath?

Use the form that is clearest and supported by your runtime. CSS is concise for common element and attribute queries; XPath can be a better fit for path-oriented or XPath-specific expressions.
