Computer logs can help reconstruct activity, build an event sequence and flag suspicious behavior—but they are only one source of evidence. A sound investigation identifies relevant records, captures short-lived data before it disappears, documents and verifies collection, and checks log interpretations against independent evidence. A log entry can show that an event was recorded; by itself, it may not establish who was at the keyboard or why an event occurred.

What computer logs can—and cannot—show

Logs record selected events, such as access, authentication, system activity or network connections. Their usefulness depends on which logging was enabled, what information each system recorded, how long records were retained, and whether the source can be trusted. Missing entries do not necessarily prove that an event did not happen.

Logs should be considered alongside other relevant evidence, including files, operating-system artifacts, application records, network traffic and endpoint security data. For example, a successful authentication record supports the conclusion that an account authenticated. It does not, on its own, identify the human using that account.

NIST describes digital forensics as the application of science to identifying, collecting, examining and analyzing data while preserving information integrity and maintaining chain of custody (NIST CSRC glossary). Its SP 800-86, Guide to Integrating Forensic Techniques into Incident Response, is organizational technical guidance, not legal advice or a complete step-by-step investigation manual.

What logs should you collect during a computer investigation?

Start with the incident questions, then identify records likely to answer them. The relevant scope may include endpoints, servers, identity systems, applications, network devices, security systems and cloud services. Check for centralized log management or a security information and event management system (SIEM), but also identify the original systems that generated the records.

  • Identity and access: authentication providers and relevant account or access records.
  • Endpoints and operating systems: audit and security logs, plus endpoint security records.
  • Servers and applications: records tied to the affected services and incident period.
  • Network and security infrastructure: firewall logs, network telemetry and other relevant security-system records.
  • Cloud services: audit records and other available logs for the services in scope.
  • Alternate sources: other independent systems that may contain related evidence if a primary record is missing or incomplete.

NIST recommends identifying sources, planning acquisition, acquiring data and verifying integrity. It advises prioritizing by likely value, volatility and the effort required to collect each source (NIST SP 800-86 PDF). CISA likewise recommends choosing what to log, enabling logging on relevant systems and centralizing records where practical (CISA: Use Logging on Business Systems).

How to collect and preserve logs as evidence

1. Define the question, scope and authority

Write down what the investigation needs to establish, which systems and custodians are in scope, the relevant time window, and who authorized collection. If evidence may be used in legal or disciplinary proceedings, consult organizational management and counsel about preservation duties and permitted collection. The appropriate method depends on the circumstances and applicable requirements.

2. Prioritize records that may disappear

Before routine activity overwrites or removes data, assess the value and volatility of each source. Memory, log buffers and short-retention records can be lost through shutdown, rotation or normal overwriting. CISA identifies system memory, Windows Security logs and firewall log buffers as examples of highly volatile or limited-retention evidence (CISA #StopRansomware Guide). NIST recommends setting criteria for volatile-data collection and weighing its risks against its potential value (NIST SP 800-86 PDF). Record the method used and any likely effect on the live system.

3. Record collection actions as they happen

Maintain a contemporaneous record of who collected data, when and from which system; the tools and versions used; commands or procedures; the source and destination; and any changes made during collection. Preserve original timestamps and note any time-zone conversions or known clock offsets. Keep the collection notes with the evidence so another examiner can understand how it was acquired.

4. Preserve originals and verify acquired copies

Use a suitable acquisition method for the source. For storage imaging, a write blocker can prevent a computer from writing to source media during imaging; its suitability depends on the storage interface and workflow. NIST recommends checking copied-data integrity by computing and comparing message digests, and accessing images and backups read-only where possible (NIST SP 800-86 PDF). Secure evidence storage and chain-of-custody records are appropriate when the context requires them (NIST CSRC glossary; NISTIR 8387, Digital Evidence Preservation).

A matching hash supports the claim that a particular copy has not changed since it was hashed. It does not prove the source was complete, that system clocks were correct, or that an interpretation of the records is accurate.

How to build a timeline from log data

Correlate relevant records across independent systems rather than treating a single log as the whole sequence. Preserve the original timestamps, normalize time zones and clock offsets carefully, and document conversions. A timeline should distinguish what the records directly show from what the investigator infers, and should identify gaps or conflicts between sources.

For example, an authentication event is an observed record of an account event. Linking it to a particular person, device or intention requires additional evidence and a reasoned explanation. Software versions and system configurations can also affect what an artifact means.

How to report findings and limitations

Explain the investigation question and scope, sources reviewed, collection procedures, integrity checks, tool names and versions, findings, alternative explanations and limitations. Be clear when a conclusion is an inference rather than a direct observation in a log.

NIST’s scientific foundation review notes that investigators may not discover all evidence, recovered deleted-file material may include unrelated content, and artifact meaning can change as operating systems and applications change (NISTIR 8354, Digital Investigation Techniques: A NIST Scientific Foundation Review). These limits are reasons to describe methods and uncertainty precisely, not to overstate what a log proves.

Improve logging readiness before an incident

Logging is the recording of activity such as who accessed what, when and from where; monitoring is the review of records for anomalies. CISA recommends selecting relevant events, regularly reviewing records and setting alerts, centralizing logs, protecting them from unauthorized access or deletion, and establishing retention policies (CISA: Use Logging on Business Systems). These measures make useful evidence more likely to be available, but cannot guarantee every relevant event was captured.

CISA also points organizations to NIST SP 800-92 Rev. 1, Cybersecurity Log Management Planning Guide (2023). For any logging approach, assess which systems and event types it can collect, whether records can be centralized and exported, retention and alteration protections, access controls and auditability, compatibility with the environment, and the staffing burden.
