Browser Use gives you three ways to automate a browser: run its Python library in your own application, connect an existing coding or agent tool through the CLI, or submit tasks to its fully hosted cloud API. The right choice depends on who operates the agent and browser, how much control you need, and whether you can manage model credentials, sessions, and failures yourself.
This guide shows the current Python setup, explains the CLI and hosted routes, compares their costs and operational boundaries, and provides patterns for authentication, CAPTCHA-sensitive sites, reliability, and debugging.
What Browser Use actually runs
Browser Use is an agent-driven browser automation project. You describe a goal, an AI agent decides which browser actions to take, and a browser executes them. The project offers three operating routes documented in its official README:

A cloud browser means the browser is hosted for you. The fully hosted API goes further: it hosts both the agent and browser. That distinction matters for network access, data handling, debugging, and billing.

Python library: the most flexible route
The current README example uses Python 3.11 or later and the uv package manager. Because the README changes, check the live quickstart before copying an older snippet.
- Install Python 3.11 or newer.
- Create a project and add the package:
uv add browser-use- Set the API key for the model provider selected by your project. The provider and model are not included in the package price.
- Create an
Agent, optionally configure a Browser Use cloud browser, run the task, and inspect the returned result.
A minimal pattern, adapted from the project’s documented approach, looks like this:

print(result)Use the model class and browser configuration supported by the version you install; names and parameters can change in a rolling README. Treat this toy task as a wiring check, not evidence that a production workflow will be reliable.
Local versus cloud browser from Python
A local browser gives you direct control over the machine, network, installed extensions, and an existing Chrome profile. A cloud browser removes that infrastructure from your deployment but introduces remote-session behavior and usage charges. Choose one explicitly for each environment rather than silently changing it between development and production.
Make tasks observable
Write tasks with a bounded objective, the allowed websites, the expected output fields, and a stopping condition. Save the final result and agent logs. For consequential actions, require a human confirmation step before submitting an order, deleting data, or sending a message. Add application-level timeouts and retries around agent.run(); an agent can finish with a plausible-looking but incomplete result.

Using the CLI
The CLI is intended for giving an existing coding or agent tool browser access interactively or from scripts. The README directs users to install or upgrade the package and register the Browser Use skill. Follow the current commands in the README because CLI syntax and skill registration are version-sensitive.
CLI is useful when a developer wants to experiment from an agent-enabled editor without building a Python service. It is less suitable when you need typed application interfaces, durable job records, custom business rules, or detailed control over every browser action; those needs generally favor the library.
Fully hosted cloud: least infrastructure, recurring usage
With the hosted API, Browser Use runs the agent and browser infrastructure. Your system submits a task and consumes the result. This can shorten deployment work and provide a consistent remote browser, but you still need to handle model credentials, secrets, task authorization, result validation, and failure recovery in your application.

Start with the Python library when you need custom tools or structured output. Try the CLI for exploration. Select the hosted API when operating browsers yourself is the larger engineering cost than the loss of local control.

Can I use Browser Use for free?
The Browser Use project states: “The Python library is free and MIT-licensed.” That covers the library itself, not every service needed to run it. Model inference and hosted browsers can incur separate charges. The product site currently lists browser usage at $0.02 per browser hour plus internet traffic. It lists Browser Use Agents at model cost + 20%, plus browser time and traffic. These are vendor-published rates that may change, so confirm the live pricing before budgeting.
Estimate a workflow by separating model tokens, browser time, traffic, and any hosted-agent surcharge. A task that repeatedly waits for slow pages can consume more browser time even if the final answer is short.
Profiles, cookies, and sign-in state
Local users can reuse a system Chrome profile. For cloud browsers, profile synchronization transfers cookies but not local storage, IndexedDB, or extensions, according to the repository documentation. A site that stores authentication or device state outside cookies may therefore ask you to sign in again.
- Use a dedicated automation profile rather than your personal daily browser.
- Store credentials in a secret manager, never in task text or source control.
- Test the exact sign-in flow in the execution environment you will deploy.
- Assume MFA, device checks, and extension-dependent workflows need an explicit fallback.
CAPTCHAs and bot detection
The README says Browser Use Cloud provides stealth browsers and proxies designed to reduce bot detection and CAPTCHA challenges. It also cautions that results depend on the site and challenge; no browser configuration guarantees that every CAPTCHA can be avoided or solved. Design a workflow that pauses for an authorized human when a challenge appears, and respect the site’s terms and access controls.
What kinds of workflows fit?
Browser Use’s product site demonstrates finding cinema seats, completing a pickup cart, exporting portal results to CSV, and website QA. These are vendor demonstrations, not independent success rates or guarantees of repeatability. In your own evaluation, measure completion rate, timeouts, incorrect actions, and recovery effort across representative pages.

Reliability checklist for production
- Use stable selectors or page landmarks where your task design permits them, and ask the agent to verify the page identity before acting.
- Set maximum task duration and action counts.
- Validate every extracted field against expected formats and ranges.
- Make side effects idempotent where possible; record an external job ID before retrying.
- Capture screenshots, URLs, and error messages for failed runs.
- Route uncertain outcomes to review instead of automatically retrying a purchase or deletion.
Troubleshooting common failures
Package or command is missing
Cause: the package was installed in another virtual environment or the CLI version is old. Fix: activate the project environment, run the current install or upgrade command from the README, and verify the executable resolves to that environment.

Model authentication error
Cause: an absent, expired, or incorrectly named provider key. Fix: set the provider’s documented environment variable, restart the process, and test a minimal agent task before debugging browser actions.
Cloud session is logged out
Cause: required state lives in local storage, IndexedDB, or an extension that cloud profile sync does not transfer. Fix: complete sign-in in the cloud session, choose a supported authentication method, or run locally where the required profile and extension exist.
Task stalls or times out
Cause: slow network resources, an infinite page state, or an agent loop. Fix: add explicit stopping criteria, cap total duration, reduce the task scope, and retain traces to identify the page or action that stalled.
CAPTCHA blocks progress
Cause: site-specific risk controls. Fix: do not assume stealth will solve it; provide an authorized human handoff or use an approved integration.

Output is plausible but wrong
Cause: the agent completed navigation without satisfying the business condition. Fix: require structured fields, state the acceptance test in the task, and validate values in your application before accepting the result.
