Studies of a custom physics tutor, K–12 STEM tools, AI-literacy lessons, and programming support point to different results in different settings, so a completed task is not proof that a student has learned.
Does AI help you learn, or just finish the assignment?
It depends on how the tool is used and what the lesson is meant to teach. An unrestricted chatbot can provide a solution without requiring the student to work through the underlying ideas. A tutor designed to prompt practice, offer feedback, and guide a learner through a problem is a different kind of instructional intervention.
The distinction matters because success with AI open is not the same as being able to recall, explain, or apply the material without it. A useful test is whether the student can solve a related problem independently after using the tool.
What structured tutoring can do
A randomized study in a Harvard undergraduate physics course compared a custom AI tutor built around pedagogical practices with active-learning lessons in class. The study involved two lessons and used a crossover design. Its authors reported median post-test scores of 4.5 for the AI group (N = 142) and 3.5 for the in-class group (N = 174); the study reports N = 194 undergraduates overall. Those results support the particular tutor and lessons studied, not a claim that any chatbot will outperform classroom instruction.

The authors of AI tutoring outperforms in-class active learning caution that “While these models can answer technical questions, their unguided use lets students complete assignments without engaging in critical thinking.” Their distinction is between unguided answer generation and a tutor deliberately designed around teaching practices.
What K–12 STEM evidence says
A 2025 meta-analysis in the International Journal of STEM Education combined 99 independent K–12 studies of personalized STEM learning. It reported an overall effect of g = 0.455 (p < 0.001; 95% CI 0.327–0.583), which the authors characterized as small. Between-study heterogeneity was high (I² = 89.697%), meaning results varied substantially across the studies. Effects differed by school level, tool, and subject; the average should not be treated as a forecast for any one student, classroom, or AI product.

How should students use AI to learn coding?
Use it to investigate an idea or error, then make the learner do the coding and explain the result. In the high-school programming trial summarized by the OECD, students receiving ChatGPT support had lower self-efficacy and achievement outcomes than the lecture-based comparison group. A scientific-computing case study also records perceived benefits alongside teacher concerns about code quality and learning. Together, these findings justify care; they do not establish that every form of programming help is harmful.
A learning-focused coding workflow
- Try the task first. Write a plan or attempt the code before asking for a solution.
- Ask a focused question. Request an explanation of a specific error, a hint, or a comparison of approaches rather than a complete assignment.
- Test the suggestion. Run the code, inspect what it does, and check it against the assignment’s requirements. A plausible or running result can still be incorrect or unsuitable.
- Explain and revise. Have the learner describe why the change works and adapt it—for example, by changing an input or requirement. If they cannot explain or modify it, the generated code has not yet demonstrated their understanding.
How can a student tell whether learning happened?
Measure assisted performance and independent performance separately. The OECD describes a mathematics trial in which standard ChatGPT access improved performance during the intervention but was followed by average performance 17% lower on an unaided measure. A structured tutor improved performance more while available; its unaided post-test did not differ significantly from the control group. This is a result from one study, not a universal effect, but it shows why completing work with AI cannot stand in for checking what learners can do alone.

Use a short unaided check
- Ask the learner to solve a fresh, related problem without AI.
- Have them explain the method or concept in their own words.
- For coding, ask for a small change to the program and an explanation of how it affects the output.
- For longer-term learning, check again later; immediate assisted success does not establish retention.
These checks are practical ways to distinguish task completion from independent understanding. They are not a single experimentally validated checklist.
Can AI literacy be taught in school?
A 2024 comparison by Zhang, Lee, and Moore found that 89 middle-school students who received a teacher-led AI-literacy curriculum showed deeper conceptual understanding and more positive attitudes than a comparison group of 69 students. The finding supports that curriculum in its studied setting; it does not establish long-term retention.

A useful AI-literacy program should cover more than using a tool. Students need to understand AI concepts, practise using systems, evaluate outputs, create with AI, and consider ethical questions. In an analysis of 98 K–12 classroom videos from central Chinese cities, Wu, Chen, Chen, and Liu found that 35.71% addressed higher-level skills such as evaluating or creating AI, while 5.1% addressed AI ethics. Those percentages describe the analyzed videos, not classrooms worldwide.

Match the tool to the learning objective. If the goal is independent problem-solving, a system that immediately supplies complete answers may work against the lesson. If the goal is practising a skill, look for ways to keep learners active: prompts, hints, feedback, and opportunities to retry.

- Learning objective: Decide what learners should be able to do without assistance afterward.
- Teacher oversight: Plan how an adult will review the tool’s role, correct misconceptions, and respond when an answer is wrong or unsuitable.
- Privacy and access: Check the specific service’s data terms, accessibility, age suitability, and whether all learners can use it equitably.
- Evidence of understanding: Include an unaided explanation or transfer task rather than relying only on work produced with AI.
These are implementation questions to investigate for each named service and classroom; the studies discussed here do not establish that any particular product meets them.
What the evidence does not establish
The findings span different ages, subjects, systems, teaching designs, and measures. The physics result concerns two undergraduate lessons and a specific custom tutor; the middle-school comparison evaluates one curriculum; programming evidence includes a particular trial and a course case study. The meta-analysis itself reports substantial variation among K–12 STEM studies. Taken together, these sources do not establish one universal causal effect, durable long-term retention, or transfer across every classroom and software-engineering course. Generative AI systems also change quickly, and the OECD cautions that much existing evaluation concerns earlier versions.
