RunWithAffinity is a small Windows launcher that can start an application with a chosen processor-affinity mask and create a shortcut to reuse that setting. It may be worth trying for a specific compatibility or workload-isolation problem, but restricting an app to fewer processors does not guarantee faster performance. For a built-in alternative, Windows documents the start /affinity command.
What RunWithAffinity does
RunWithAffinity is described as a Windows utility for choosing an application, selecting the processors it may use, and launching it with that affinity. Its reported shortcut feature lets you save the launch setting for reuse. The original BetaNews tip described this behavior in 2011 (BetaNews); a third-party Software Informer catalog lists version 1.0, but that listing does not establish current developer support, security, or compatibility (Software Informer).
Processor affinity limits the processors on which a process is allowed to run. It does not make the app faster by itself: limiting available processors can make its work take longer. A 2011 BetaNews article suggested trying a single-core restriction for some older-game compatibility problems, but that is a troubleshooting possibility, not a guarantee or a verified fix for current games.
Try RunWithAffinity for a targeted reason
Use it only when you have a concrete reason to test a processor restriction—for example, an older application that behaves poorly across multiple processors, or a long-running workload you want to keep from using every processor. Compare behavior with and without the restriction, and remove it if the application slows down or becomes less stable. The 2011 BetaNews tip warns that a task may take longer when confined to one core, while other cores remain available for other programs.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not use affinity as a general performance tweak, and do not restrict Windows or other system-critical processes. The available descriptions do not establish a reliable performance gain for RunWithAffinity or processor affinity in general.
Use Windows’ built-in start /affinity command
Microsoft documents start /affinity <hexaffinity> for applying a hexadecimal processor-affinity mask to a newly started application. The Microsoft command reference lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 among the applicable products, along with specified Windows Server and Azure Local releases.

An affinity value is a bit mask, not simply a human-readable core number. Which processors are selected depends on the mask and the system’s processor numbering. Microsoft’s reference explains the mask syntax but does not make a single-digit example universal core-numbering guidance. Verify the mask you intend to use rather than assuming that a digit always corresponds to a particular core in Task Manager.
For example, BetaNews showed start /affinity 1 notepad.exe as a historical illustration. Treat that as an example, not a general recipe for selecting a named core. If you create a shortcut or batch file, use the exact executable path and quoting appropriate to that file and command shell; the Microsoft reference is the primary source for command syntax.

Historical RunWithAffinity limits are not current specifications
Softpedia reviewed RunWithAffinity 1.0.2 on a dual-core test machine on April 13, 2011. Reviewer Ionut Ilascu reported that the utility supported up to 16 cores in that test, displayed core numbering differently from Task Manager, and created a shortcut that did not work after all cores were selected (Softpedia review). These are historical observations, not verified limits or known bugs in a current release.
