Set Playwright’s color-scheme preference to dark before navigating, then save the page with Page.screenshot(). This emulates the prefers-color-scheme: dark media feature; the site must support that preference for its design to appear dark.
Capture a page with dark preference
In Java, configure the browser context with ColorScheme.DARK before creating and navigating the page. This makes the preference available to page scripts from the start. The example saves a full-page PNG:

}Replace https://example.com with the page to capture. The code uses Chromium; Playwright Java can launch other supported browser engines if installed. A directly created context is closed before the browser so its resources are flushed.
Choose where to set the color scheme
Set it when creating the context
Use new Browser.NewContextOptions().setColorScheme(ColorScheme.DARK) when pages in that context should share the same preference. Create the context first, then open pages and navigate.

Set it on a new page
For a convenience page, the preference can be set through Browser.NewPageOptions when creating it. Context configuration is preferable when you want a consistent setting across pages.
Change an existing page
Call emulateMedia before taking the screenshot:

.setColorScheme(ColorScheme.DARK));This changes the emulated media preference on that page. If the page already rendered content based on the previous preference, allow it to update before capturing.
Understand what dark-mode emulation changes
ColorScheme.DARK tells the page that prefers-color-scheme: dark is active. It does not force dark colors onto a site that ignores that media feature. A site may instead have a separate in-page theme control, or may provide no dark appearance at all.

Choose screenshot scope, format, and scale
Viewport or full page
By default, Page.screenshot() captures the current viewport. Add setFullPage(true) to capture beyond the viewport:

Output format and scale
The screenshot API documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP formats, along with CSS and device scale choices. CSS scale produces one output pixel per CSS pixel; device scale uses device pixels and can make high-DPI output larger. Set format or scale only after checking the options supported by the Playwright version installed in your project.

Capture one element
For a specific element, use a locator’s screenshot method rather than the discouraged ElementHandle screenshot API. Locator capture scrolls the element into view and waits for actionability checks:

Install and run Playwright Java
The official installation guide lists Java 8 or higher and the relevant platform and browser requirements. Check that guide for current setup details before installing on a new machine. Playwright browsers run headless by default, so a visible browser window is not required for this screenshot flow.
Troubleshoot common problems
The screenshot is still light
- Confirm you set
ColorScheme.DARKon the context or calledemulateMediabefore capture. - Evaluate
matchMedia('(prefers-color-scheme: dark)').matchesto confirm the preference is active. - If it returns true, the page may not implement a dark scheme through
prefers-color-scheme; use its own theme control if available.
The screenshot is cut off
Use setFullPage(true) for a full-page capture. Without it, the screenshot covers the viewport.

The browser does not launch
Check the Java and platform requirements in Playwright’s installation guide and make sure the browser binaries required by the project are installed. Browser requirements can change, so use the guide corresponding to the Playwright version in your project.
The output format or scale option is rejected
Check the Page API for the installed Playwright version. Supported formats and option names may differ from the documentation for another version.
The element screenshot fails or misses the target
Verify that the locator matches the intended element and that it can become actionable. Locator screenshots scroll the target into view and perform actionability checks; those checks can reveal an element that is hidden or otherwise unavailable.

Does Playwright’s dark color scheme setting change the operating system theme?
No. It emulates the page’s color-scheme media preference in the browser; it does not change the host operating system’s theme.
