Use Playwright Java’s Page.setViewportSize(width, height) to resize the browser, then call Page.screenshot(...) once per width. Set the viewport before navigating when the page’s initial responsive behavior matters, and keep height, browser engine, page state, and screenshot scale consistent so width is the main variable.
Capture the same page at several widths
The example below captures the visible viewport at 375, 768, and 1280 CSS pixels wide, using the same height for each image. It saves a separate PNG whose filename records the width.
import com.microsoft.playwright.*;
import java.nio.file.Paths;
public class MultiWidthScreenshots {
public static void main(String[] args) {
String url = "https://example.com";
int[] widths = {375, 768, 1280};
int height = 900;
try (Playwright playwright = Playwright.create()) {
Browser browser = playwright.chromium().launch();
BrowserContext context = browser.newContext(
new Browser.NewContextOptions().setViewportSize(widths[0], height));
Page page = context.newPage();
for (int width : widths) {
page.setViewportSize(width, height);
page.navigate(url);
// Replace this with a page-specific readiness condition if needed.
page.screenshot(new Page.ScreenshotOptions()
.setPath(Paths.get("page-" + width + ".png")));
}
context.close();
browser.close();
}
}
}
Replace https://example.com with the page to capture. The Java APIs used here—Page.setViewportSize, Page.screenshot, and context viewport configuration—are documented in the Playwright Java screenshot guide, Page API, and Browser API. Check the documentation for your Playwright Java dependency version before relying on version-sensitive options.
Wait for the page state you need
page.navigate(url) completes navigation according to its configured load condition, but that does not guarantee that application data, animations, or lazy content have reached the state you want to compare. Add a page-specific wait before the screenshot—for example, wait for a known result element or a stable application state. There is no single readiness condition that suits every site.

Choose viewport or full-page capture
A normal call to Page.screenshot(...) captures the currently visible viewport. That is the right choice when the question is how a layout looks at a fixed browser size. To capture the whole scrollable document instead, enable full-page capture:
page.screenshot(new Page.ScreenshotOptions()
.setPath(Paths.get("page-full-" + width + ".png"))
.setFullPage(true));
Full-page output represents the document as a tall image; it does not show the experience inside a fixed-height viewport. For responsive-layout comparisons, viewport images are usually the meaningful set. Use full-page output when you need a complete page record at each width. Playwright also supports saving to a path or obtaining screenshot bytes for further processing; see the screenshots guide.

Keep comparisons controlled
If you want to isolate the effect of width, hold other conditions steady. Use the same browser engine, viewport height, page state, device scale factor, and screenshot scale for every capture. If content changes between runs, the images may differ for reasons unrelated to the viewport.
- Viewport dimensions: vary width intentionally and keep height fixed when width is the variable under review.
- Page state: use the same data, consent state, scroll position, and application readiness condition.
- Screenshot scale: CSS scale produces one image pixel per CSS pixel; device scale uses device pixels and can produce larger images in high-DPI contexts.
- Extent: choose viewport-only or full-page capture based on the question; these are not interchangeable views.
The screenshot API documents options for output format and quality, masking, animation handling, and injected styles. Use these only when they support the purpose of the comparison, and keep them identical across widths when visual consistency matters. See the Page API.

Choose page-level resizing or context-level emulation
Resize one page in a loop
page.setViewportSize(width, height) is the direct option when one page is captured repeatedly at different widths. The Page API cautions that changing viewport size resets screen size. If the target page responds to initial dimensions during startup, resize before each navigation, as the example does.
Set a viewport for a context
Use browser.newContext(...) when pages in a context should share the same viewport and emulation settings. The Browser API documents a default viewport of 1280×720 and context options for viewport, screen, and device scale factor. Context-level setup is useful for isolated cases or when multiple pages should use identical settings.

Configure screen dimensions when needed
A viewport is not the same thing as the emulated screen. If the page or test reads window.screen, configure screen dimensions on the context as well as the viewport. The Browser API documents setScreenSize; the Page API notes that Page.setViewportSize() resets screen size. For broader device behavior, the Playwright Java emulation guide describes controls including device scale factor, touch, mobile behavior, screen size, and user agent. A viewport width alone does not reproduce every property of a physical phone or tablet.
Troubleshoot missing or inconsistent screenshots
- The output still looks like the old width: set the viewport before navigation if initial responsive setup matters, and verify the dimensions supplied to
setViewportSize. - Images or data are missing: the page may not be ready when the screenshot runs. Wait for the relevant element or application state rather than assuming navigation alone means all asynchronous work has settled.
- The page fits vertically when you expected a long image: viewport capture is the default. Set
setFullPage(true)for the full scrollable document. - Image pixel dimensions differ from CSS dimensions: check screenshot scale and the context’s device scale factor. Device-pixel output may be larger in high-DPI contexts.
- Screen-dependent behavior does not match the expected device: viewport resizing alone may leave screen dimensions and other device properties unchanged. Configure the relevant context emulation options and state what the test represents.
- Images differ for reasons other than width: keep browser engine, height, content state, and capture options fixed; make sure each capture starts from the same page state.
