A basic USB wired mouse has left- and right-click buttons and a wheel for scrolling; on many models, pressing the wheel also acts as a middle click. Before choosing one, check whether its USB plug fits your computer and whether the specific model lists support for your operating system. A standard USB Human Interface Device (HID) mouse typically works in Windows without a separate vendor driver for basic pointing, but that is not a guarantee for every computer, adapter, or extra feature.
What does “two buttons plus wheel” mean?
Usually, “two buttons” means the primary left and right buttons, with the scroll wheel between them. The wheel commonly turns to scroll vertically and may also press down to produce a middle-button click. That is why a listing may describe the same basic layout as either a two-button mouse with a wheel or a three-button mouse.
Windows’ HID documentation treats mouse buttons and vertical or horizontal wheel scrolling as distinct supported controls. A particular product listing should say whether its wheel press is clickable; the presence of a wheel alone does not establish that it has a click action.
Will a USB wired mouse work with your computer?
Check the connector first
Look at the mouse’s plug and your computer’s available ports. A USB-A plug will not fit a USB-C-only port directly; you would need a suitable adapter or a mouse with a compatible connector. The product’s connector type is a model-specific detail, not something to infer from the phrase “USB wired mouse.”

Check operating-system support
Microsoft documents that Windows supplies HID mapper drivers and that standard, compliant HID mice do not require a vendor driver for basic input. That guidance applies to Windows and ordinary HID behavior; it does not guarantee compatibility with every operating system, unusual device, adapter, or proprietary button feature. Check the manufacturer’s support information for the exact model and revision.
Know what compatibility claims establish
Manufacturers sometimes describe compatibility broadly, but that is not proof that every revision works with every computer. For example, Logitech lists the corded M500s for Windows 10/11 or later and macOS 10.12 or later, while Macally describes its wired optical mouse as compatible with Mac and PC. Confirm the details on the product page for the item you plan to buy.

What should you compare before choosing?
- Connector and host port: Match USB-A or USB-C to an available port, or account for a suitable adapter.
- Button layout: Confirm the left and right buttons, any additional controls, and whether the wheel press works as a middle click. Listings may count that press as a third button.
- Shape and fit: Check the dimensions and whether the shape is suited to your hand and preferred grip. Do not assume two similarly described mice have the same size or shape.
- Cable length: Make sure the cord can reach from the intended USB port to your usual mouse position.
- Tracking details: If resolution or tracking technology matters to you, check whether the manufacturer provides those specifications.
- Operating-system support: Use the model’s stated support information rather than relying only on a general “Mac and PC” claim.
Example: a basic USB-A mouse with a wheel click
Adafruit’s Product 2025 listing describes a USB-A wired optical mouse with two primary buttons and a click-enabled scroll wheel. Its stated specifications are a 180 cm cable and dimensions of 110 × 64 × 42 mm; Adafruit says it works with Raspberry Pi products and other computers with a USB port. These are details for that particular product, not specifications for the category as a whole. The listing notes a new supplier as of March 20, 2025.
Other models add controls or list different compatibility requirements. Logitech’s corded M500s, for instance, includes extra controls alongside left/right buttons and a wheel click. Compare the exact features and support for each model rather than assuming every two-button wired mouse has the same layout.
