A USB port that will not connect, charge, or recognize a device is not necessarily damaged. Test the peripheral, cable, port, and computer in a controlled order; then check USB-C feature compatibility, power, debris, and software clues. The right fix depends on what the port is supposed to do and on the computer model.
First, determine whether the port is actually the problem
Change one part of the connection at a time so you can isolate the fault. Disconnect and reconnect the device, then try a different port on the same computer. If possible, test the device with a known-good cable and connect it to another computer. For an iPhone or iPad, the cable must support both data and charging for the computer to recognize it; a charging-only cable cannot establish that connection. See Apple’s device-recognition steps.
- If the same device and cable fail on more than one computer, the peripheral or cable becomes a more likely cause.
- If they work elsewhere but not in one port, the port or that computer’s configuration becomes more likely. This does not by itself prove physical damage.
- If the device works in another port on the same computer, focus on the original port and its supported features.
Connect directly and check USB-C compatibility
Temporarily remove hubs and docks from the connection. Connect one device directly to the computer. A hub or dock can limit function, and a self-powered hub also needs its AC adapter connected. Microsoft lists a hub or dock and using the wrong USB-C port among possible reasons a USB-C device has limited functionality. Apple recommends a direct connection when a Mac reports a USB power issue. See Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guide and Apple’s Mac USB power-alert guidance.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUSB-C describes the connector shape, not a guarantee of every feature. The computer port, cable, and device must all support the function you need: data transfer, charging, display output, or Thunderbolt. A cable can fit and charge while lacking the data rate or alternate-mode capability required for another task. Check the computer and peripheral makers’ compatibility information before treating a feature mismatch as a failed port.

When choosing a test cable or hub, match the required function and charging power to the computer and peripheral. For a hub, check whether it needs its own power adapter. Connector fit alone does not establish compatibility.
If the USB device will not charge or triggers a power warning
Check the entire power path rather than assuming the port is defective. Confirm the outlet works, use an appropriate charger and cable, and connect to a port that supports charging. Bypass hubs during diagnosis. On Windows, connect the computer to external power and disconnect other USB devices you are not using; the computer may not provide enough power for a connected device. Microsoft describes inadequate computer power as one possible cause in its USB-C troubleshooting guidance.

For a Mac USB-C charging issue, follow Apple’s steps for USB-C power alerts. They include checking the connection and power source. Apple also flags a cable that works only when moved as a reason to evaluate the cable or power supply. Do not keep wiggling a suspect connection to make it work; stop using the suspect cable and seek appropriate evaluation.

Inspect the port without risking further damage
Dust or debris can prevent a cable from seating fully or interfere with charging. Microsoft and Apple mention compressed air when discussing USB-C port cleaning. Microsoft’s instruction is to “Use a can of compressed air to clean the USB-C port on your PC.” Treat this as a cleaning suggestion, not a guaranteed repair: compressed air cannot correct a loose connector, damaged contacts, or an electrical fault. Follow the computer maker’s device-specific guidance.

Do not put liquids or metal picks into a port, and do not open the computer based on a generic troubleshooting guide. If the port looks damaged or loose, or a connection remains unreliable after basic checks, stop using it and consult support for the exact model.
Use software clues instead of guessing at a Windows fix
If Windows reports an unrecognized USB device, open Device Manager and note the error code shown for that device. Use Microsoft’s code-specific instructions rather than applying a generic driver reinstall, BIOS change, or power-management setting; none of those actions is a universal remedy. For broader USB-C symptoms, consult Microsoft’s guide to USB-C problems in Windows, which covers Windows 11 and Windows 10. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so it should not be treated as a currently supported Windows version.

When the port needs service
Seek manufacturer support or a qualified repair provider if direct connections, a known-good compatible cable, and basic power and software checks do not restore operation. Persistent failure, visible damage, looseness, or a connection that works only when moved needs model-specific assessment. A port replacement or controller repair depends on the computer’s design and diagnosis; do not order parts or attempt disassembly based only on the connector type.

Apple’s Mac charging guidance includes an SMC reset only for the conditional Intel Mac charging scenario it describes. That is not a general fix for every Mac USB problem. Use Apple’s instructions for the exact Mac and symptom rather than applying a reset to unrelated faults: Mac USB power alerts.
