A dock adds ports and display connections to one computer; a KVM switch lets multiple computers share a display and peripherals. If you need both jobs, you can use a combined dock-KVM, or pair a dock with a compatible KVM—but not every combination works reliably. The right choice depends on your computers’ video and USB capabilities, the number and specifications of your displays, and whether you need laptop charging.
What a dock does—and what it does not do
A docking station expands the connections available to a host computer. Depending on the model and the computer, a dock can provide connections for displays, USB peripherals, wired networking, and power. Microsoft describes docking as a way to connect displays and peripherals, with some docks also providing power and networking: Microsoft’s docking guidance.
A dock is not, by itself, a way to switch one set of peripherals between two computers. Most docks connect to one host at a time. If you want to move a monitor, keyboard, and mouse between computers, you need a switching function as well.
What a KVM switch does
KVM stands for keyboard, video, and mouse. A KVM switch connects multiple computers to shared display and USB peripherals, then switches control from one host to another. Traditional KVMs expect each computer to provide video directly—such as HDMI or DisplayPort—and a USB connection for peripherals. The exact inputs, display count, resolution, refresh rate, and switching method vary by model. See the StarTech hybrid KVM datasheet for an example of a product-specific configuration.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A KVM does not necessarily provide the broader expansion or laptop-charging functions of a dock. Check the individual switch’s ports and specifications rather than assuming that “KVM” means it can charge a laptop or connect every type of display.
Compare the options
| Setup | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Dock | Expand connections for one computer, including displays and peripherals; some models also provide charging and wired networking. | Host video support, dock compatibility, display limits, available ports, and power delivery. |
| KVM switch | Share a display and USB peripherals between two or more computers. | Host video and USB connections, number of displays, resolution, refresh rate, peripheral needs, and switching method. |
| Dock plus KVM | Give a laptop dock functions while also switching shared displays and peripherals to another computer. | Whether the dock’s outputs and signal path are compatible with the KVM; test compatibility against the exact models’ documentation. |
| Combined dock-KVM | Combine expansion and switching in one device, potentially reducing the number of separate boxes and connections. | Supported host types, display inputs and outputs, charging, display modes, and the capabilities required from each computer. |
| Monitor with built-in KVM | Share a keyboard and mouse between connected computers using a monitor’s KVM feature. | The monitor’s supported display inputs, USB upstream connections, and model-specific setup. |
Which setup should you choose?
Choose a dock for one computer’s connections
Choose a dock if your main goal is to connect one computer to more displays or peripherals, add ports, or charge it through a single supported connection. Confirm that the computer supports the dock’s required video mode and that the dock can supply the power your laptop needs. Dell notes that multi-monitor support and higher resolutions depend on the laptop’s available bandwidth; check its dock setup guidance and the documentation for your specific devices.

Choose a KVM when you need to switch between computers
Choose a KVM if two or more computers need to share one or more displays and peripherals. Match the switch to the video connections on every host and to the monitors’ resolution, refresh rate, and number of screens. Also check which USB devices it supports and how you switch between hosts.
Choose a dock plus KVM when you need both functions
This arrangement can make sense when a laptop needs a dock but the same display and peripherals must also be used with another computer. The key issue is the signal path: the dock must deliver connections the KVM can accept. A traditional KVM may not behave well with every dock, particularly a DisplayLink dock in the video path. Plugable describes possible detection problems, blank screens, and display arrangement issues, and advises treating compatibility as product-specific: Plugable’s KVM and DisplayLink guidance.

Consider a combined dock-KVM or a monitor KVM
A combined device can reduce the number of boxes and simplify switching, but its advertised capabilities depend on the connected computers and accessories. ATEN documents the US3311 as a two-host USB-C KVM switch and multiport dock for one DisplayPort display. Check the product manual and both hosts’ specifications; its display modes are not guaranteed on every computer.
If you are already choosing a monitor, a model with a built-in KVM may handle keyboard-and-mouse sharing. ASUS documents a setup for compatible monitors, but supported inputs and steps depend on the particular model: ASUS monitor KVM setup.

Check the connections before buying
Confirm what each USB-C port supports
The shape of a USB-C connector alone does not establish that it can output video or charge the laptop. Check the computer’s specifications for DisplayPort Alternate Mode or the required USB4 or Thunderbolt capability, and compare those requirements with the dock or KVM manual. Microsoft notes that a DisplayPort Alternate Mode adapter must connect to a port that supports that mode: Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance.
Check display limits across the whole setup
Count the displays you want to use and confirm the supported resolution and refresh rate for the full chain: computer, dock or KVM, cables, and monitors. A dock’s advertised maximum does not override the host computer’s bandwidth or port capabilities. Dell recommends checking the laptop’s port support and dock guidance when assessing multi-monitor configurations.

Account for power and peripherals
If the dock is expected to charge a laptop, verify its power delivery against the laptop’s requirements. List the peripherals that need to work through the setup—such as keyboard, mouse, storage, or other USB devices—and confirm that the dock and switch provide suitable connections. Also note whether wired networking is needed, since that feature is offered by some docks, not guaranteed on all of them.
Verify the exact models and their manuals
Before choosing a dock-and-KVM combination, verify that the KVM accepts the dock’s output and that the dock supports the host and displays you plan to use. For any setup, compare host count, video and USB capabilities, display count, resolution and refresh rate, charging needs, cabling, and operating-system or device compatibility against the exact product manuals.
