USB-C is a widely used connector standard found on devices from many manufacturers; Lightning is Apple’s connector on older Apple devices. Both plugs are reversible. The practical difference is that USB-C devices and cables can support different charging, data, display, and accessory functions, while Lightning devices need a Lightning cable or a compatible adapter. The connector’s shape alone does not tell you how fast a device transfers data or charges.

Is USB-C faster than Lightning?
Not necessarily. USB-C describes a connector, not a guaranteed data rate. The device and cable must both support the faster standard. Apple’s specifications illustrate the difference between models: iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 list USB 2 data transfer up to 480 Mb/s, while Apple says selected Pro models support USB 3.2 Gen 2 up to 10 Gbit/s when used with an optional USB 3 cable. Those are Apple model-specific specifications, not a universal comparison of USB-C and Lightning. To estimate transfer performance, look up the exact device and check that the cable supports the data rate you need. A cable that fits the port may still be limited to a slower rate.
Can a USB-C device connect to a Lightning device?
Yes. Choose a cable or adapter with the correct connector at each end. A USB-C-to-Lightning cable connects a Lightning device to a USB-C port or power source. Apple describes this cable in its USB-C charging guidance.

If you want to keep using a Lightning accessory with a USB-C iPhone or iPad, Apple’s USB-C to Lightning Adapter supports charging, data, and audio. Check the adapter’s compatibility and the accessory’s requirements before connecting it.
Can you use the same charger for both?
A USB-C power adapter can charge a USB-C iPhone when it complies with USB-C charging requirements, including USB Power Delivery. Apple says a 20 W or higher adapter can provide faster charging for supported iPhone models; actual charging speed depends on the device and setup. A Lightning device can connect to a USB-C adapter with a USB-C-to-Lightning cable. The adapter’s port and cable ends must match the device.

What to check before choosing a cable or adapter
- Device ports: Identify the connector on each device. A USB-C port and a Lightning port require different cable ends unless you use an adapter.
- Data needs: If you transfer large files, check the device’s stated USB protocol and the cable’s data specification. Connector shape alone does not guarantee a speed.
- Charging support: Confirm that the power adapter and cable support the charging method your device accepts.
- Accessory function: For audio, data, or display use, verify that the specific device and adapter support that function; physical fit alone is not proof of compatibility.
- Cable markings and compliance: USB-IF publishes guidance on USB cable compliance and markings at usb.org/compliance.
Why newer iPhones use USB-C
Apple introduced USB-C on iPhone 15 and later. At the launch, Apple’s vice president of iPhone product marketing Kaiann Drance said, “USB-C has become a universally accepted standard so we’re bringing USB-C to iPhone 15,” as reported by the Associated Press on September 13, 2023. That explains Apple’s stated reason for the change; it does not mean every USB-C device or cable has the same capabilities.
