USB-C power-delivery reference designs address different engineering jobs: controlling a port, carrying high-speed data, charging a battery, supporting bidirectional power flow, or converting USB-C power to a system rail. The five designs below show those distinctions. Their electrical ratings apply to the cited designs, not to USB-C systems generally.
How to choose among USB-C PD reference designs
Start with the system job, then check power-flow direction, electrical limits, battery range, data-path requirements and available implementation materials. A controller’s maximum current, a converter’s operating range and a complete system’s output rating are different kinds of specifications; they are not interchangeable.
- Port control: Does the design handle power roles, protection and switching?
- Data and display: Does it include multiplexing or signal conditioning for USB and DisplayPort?
- Battery charging: What cell-count range and charger integration does it cover?
- Power direction: Is it sink-only, or can it also supply power in source or OTG mode?
- Implementation: Are schematics, PCB files, BOMs, test results, configuration tools or evaluation hardware available?
Five reference designs, matched to their jobs
| Design | Best fit | Key stated capability | Power-flow or data features |
|---|---|---|---|
| TI TIDA-00714 | USB-C port control | Design-specific ratings should be checked in TI’s design materials | Source/sink switching, protection and data multiplexing |
| TI TIDA-010248 | Industrial PC or HMI with USB and display lanes | 5–20 V output, up to 3 A (60 W) | USB 3.2 and DisplayPort redrivers; configurable dual-port controller |
| TI TIDA-050047 | Integrated USB-C PD and 2–4-cell charging | Up to 20 V at 5 A charging capability | Source/sink or sink-only configuration; source-mode OTG |
| TI PMP41013 | Bidirectional charging for 1–5-cell batteries | Specific output limits are not stated in the cited summary; see TI’s design materials | Charging and on-the-go source mode |
| Analog Devices MAXREFDES1283 | Creating a 24-V rail from USB-C PD | 24 V DC up to 1 A; output power capability up to 30 W | Negotiates 15-V input, then boosts to 24 V |
1. TI TIDA-00714: control the port and its data path
TI’s TIDA-00714 combines a USB Type-C and PD controller with power switching, over-voltage and over-current protection, a high-speed data-port multiplexer and a USB low-speed endpoint. It is a useful starting point when the hard part is coordinating port power behavior with data-path selection, rather than simply charging a battery. TI also identifies alternate-mode work such as DisplayPort and USB-C/PD debugging as relevant applications. The page provides design files, including a schematic, and lists the TPS65982-EVM as associated evaluation hardware.

TIDA-010248 targets industrial PCs and human-machine interfaces that need USB-C PD alongside high-speed data or display lanes. TI specifies 5–20 V output at up to 3 A, or 60 W. Separately, the page describes redrivers for USB 3.2 at 10 Gbps, USB 3.2 x 2 at 20 Gbps and DisplayPort 1.4 at 8.1 Gbps, plus a configurable dual-port controller and a 5–20-V, 5-A buck-boost converter. Those are distinct listed features: the 5-A converter capability does not mean the design delivers 5 A at every output voltage. The page lists an evaluation module and simulation resources.

3. TI TIDA-050047: integrate PD and 2–4-cell charging
TIDA-050047 combines USB-C PD with charging for two- to four-cell batteries. TI states charging capability up to 20 V at 5 A without external FETs. Its TPS25750 PD controller communicates over I²C with a BQ25798 battery charger, and a web-based configuration GUI is available. The design can be configured for source/sink or sink-only operation and supports source-mode OTG. The associated USB-PD-CHG-EVM-01 offers a route to hands-on evaluation. The stated capability belongs to this reference design; a particular pack’s supported charging conditions still depend on the battery and implementation.
4. TI PMP41013: bidirectional charging across 1–5 cells
PMP41013 covers one- to five-cell batteries and is intended for systems that need both charging and on-the-go source mode. TI names power-tool chargers, vacuum cleaners and portable power stations as application examples. The design uses a BQ25731 charger and TPS25750 PD controller, with a schematic and other design resources on the page. Its cell-count range differs from TIDA-050047; choose based on the actual battery architecture and required power direction, and verify chemistry, thermal limits and system power requirements against the design documentation.

5. Analog Devices MAXREFDES1283: derive 24 V from a PD input
MAXREFDES1283 demonstrates a different pattern: negotiate a 15-V input from a capable USB-C PD source, then use a boost converter to create a 24-V DC rail. Analog Devices specifies up to 1 A at 24 V and output power capability up to 30 W, with audio equipment, lighting and sensors as example loads. The source must support the requested PD contract, and the downstream rail remains bounded by the design’s ratings. The page provides a schematic, PCB layout, BOM and test results.
Other useful battery-charging comparisons
Three additional TI designs help illustrate how cell range and operating role change the selection. Their figures are design-specific, not comparative independent test results.

- PMP41083 covers 4–10-cell charging up to 100 W. TI’s test report, dated 2024, reports greater than 95.8% efficiency at full load for that design.
- PMP41062 is a 100-W bidirectional USB-C PD charging design for 4–10-cell batteries, with power tools, vacuum cleaners and portable power stations among its named applications.
- PMP23456 is a smaller, sink-only single-cell example. TI specifies input negotiation at either 5 V/3 A or 9 V/3 A, up to 4.8 V maximum at the system/battery output and a 3-A total output-load design limit.
What to verify before adapting a design
- Read the design guide and revision. Confirm that the published schematic, component choices and stated ratings apply to the version you plan to use.
- Match the source contract to the load. Check the available USB-C PD source profiles and the design’s negotiated input voltage before sizing a downstream converter or battery charger.
- Check current and power at the operating point. Do not infer a system output from a converter’s current capability alone; verify the specific voltage, load, thermal and power limits.
- Confirm the battery and direction of power flow. Match cell count and charger requirements, and determine whether the product needs sink-only charging or source/OTG operation.
- Inspect implementation resources and hardware availability. Vendor pages may provide schematics, PCB layouts, BOMs, test reports, configuration tools or evaluation modules. Check current board availability and component status before committing to a build.
