USB-C tells you what the connector looks like—not how fast a cable transfers data, how much power it can carry, or whether it supports a display. Those capabilities vary between cables that look alike. To choose the right one, check its stated power and data ratings, then confirm that the charger, host device, and peripheral support the same features.

What USB-C tells you—and what it doesn’t

USB Type-C, commonly called USB-C, is a reversible connector system. It is not a data-speed rating or a promise of a particular charging or video capability. As USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) puts it, “USB Type-C® is a type of connector.” USB-C is not interchangeable with USB 3.2, USB4, or USB Power Delivery (USB PD), which describe separate standards or capabilities. (USB-IF language and packaging guidelines, 2023)

That distinction explains why two USB-C cables can look identical but behave differently. Their internal capabilities and ratings may differ, and the connected equipment must also support the feature you want.

How USB-C cable capabilities differ

Data speed

A USB 2.0 Type-C cable supports USB 2.0 data operation up to 480 Mbps, according to USB-IF’s 2023 guidance. That is the standard’s stated ceiling, not a guarantee of real-world transfer speed. Such a cable does not carry USB 3.2 or USB4 signals or Alt Mode. If faster host and peripheral devices are connected through it, the link is limited to USB 2.0 performance.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

USB 3.2 and USB4 are data standards, not other names for the USB-C connector. To use their capabilities, the cable and both connected devices must support the intended mode. USB-IF describes USB4 as compatible with USB 3.2, USB 2.0, and Thunderbolt 3 hosts and devices, with performance scaling to their mutual capability. Its overview describes operation up to 80 Gbps over 80 Gbps-certified cables; that is not a capability of every USB-C cable. (USB-IF USB4 overview)

Charging power

USB Power Delivery is a power-negotiation protocol, not another name for USB-C. USB-IF’s 2023 Type-C guidance describes USB PD capability up to 240W. The maximum available to a particular setup depends on the cable, charger, and device; the 240W ceiling does not mean every USB-C connection can deliver that much.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Data and power are separate capabilities: a USB 2.0 Type-C cable may support USB PD while still being limited to USB 2.0 data. Don’t assume that a cable’s charging rating tells you its data speed, or vice versa.

Video and displays

A USB-C connector alone does not establish that a cable supports video. Display operation may depend on Alt Mode or USB4/Thunderbolt support, as well as compatibility among the cable, host, and display. Confirm the exact display mode supported by the products you plan to connect rather than relying on the connector shape or a generic “USB-C” label.

What to check before choosing a cable

  • Power: Look for an explicit wattage rating and check that it suits both your charger and device.
  • Data: Find the stated data rate in Gbps or the USB standard and generation. A USB 2.0 Type-C cable is limited to up to 480 Mbps data operation.
  • Video: Verify explicit support for the intended display mode and compatibility with the host and display.
  • Connector ends: Check whether the cable is USB-C to USB-C, USB-A to USB-C, or another configuration. The USB-IF cable-marking requirements described below apply to USB-C to USB-C categories.
  • Length and exact model: Check the specifications for the particular cable at its listed length. The sources cited here do not establish one performance rule that applies to every cable length.
  • Certification: If USB-IF certification matters to you, check the product listing and certification information. A logo or connector appearance should not be treated as proof that an individual cable is certified.

USB-IF’s compliance program specifies power and, for most categories, data-rate markings for USB-C to USB-C cables. Cables in the program must show a 60W or 240W power capability. The compliant categories must also show the supported data rate, except for High-Speed USB (USB 2.0) cables. USB-IF gives a 20Gbps/60W marking as an example for a cable supporting 20V at 3A. These are program requirements, not a guarantee that every cable sold at retail is certified or marked under the program. (USB-IF Cables and Connectors)

Why the cable isn’t the whole connection

The charger, host, peripheral, and cable all contribute to what a USB-C connection can do. A cable cannot give a device a faster data standard, more charging capability, or a display mode it does not support. For maximum USB 3.2 or USB4 benefit, USB-IF’s packaging guidance calls for a full-featured Type-C cable and a capable host and device. USB4 compatibility allows connections to work at their mutual capability; it does not make every component operate at the newest or fastest rate.

How to verify a specific setup

  1. Identify the job. Decide whether you need charging, fast data transfer, video, or more than one of these.
  2. Check the cable listing or package. Match its explicit wattage and data-rate ratings to the job. For video, look for the specific supported mode rather than assuming it from USB-C.
  3. Check every connected device. Confirm that the charger, host, and peripheral or display support the intended power level, data standard, or video mode.
  4. Confirm the connector configuration. Make sure both ends match the devices and remember that the USB-IF marking rules cited here concern USB-C to USB-C cable categories.
  5. Check certification if it matters. Consult USB-IF’s cable guidance and the product’s certification information; do not infer certification from appearance alone.
