USB-C audio is not automatically better than 3.5 mm audio. USB-C can send digital audio to a DAC and amplifier in an adapter or headphones, giving manufacturers another way to build the audio stage. But the result depends on that hardware and the rest of the playback chain—not the connector. A 3.5 mm jack sends analog audio, converted inside the phone or other source device.

Do 3.5 mm or USB-C headphones provide better sound quality?

Neither connection guarantees better sound. With 3.5 mm headphones, the source device has already converted digital audio to analog before it reaches the headphone cable. With USB-C, the signal may remain digital until a DAC in the headphones or an adapter converts it. That can let a manufacturer choose a different DAC and amplifier, but it does not guarantee a better one.

The USB-C label alone does not even tell you which signal path a product uses. USB-C supports digital USB audio, while some supported implementations also allow analog audio accessory mode. Texas Instruments describes this analog mode as dependent on host support; the connector by itself is not proof of a digital path. Texas Instruments explains USB-C audio modes.

For sound, consider the whole chain: the headphone drivers and tuning, the source and audio processing, the DAC and amplifier, and whether the amplifier can supply the power the headphones need. A different or external DAC may help in a particular setup, but changing ports alone is not an upgrade. There is no controlled head-to-head test across named phones and headphones behind a general claim that one connector sounds better.

What changes when audio goes through USB-C?

Digital USB audio

In a digital setup, audio travels over USB and a DAC in the headphones or adapter converts it to analog for listening. An external design can be built for higher fidelity or output power, according to Android’s guidance, but that choice adds cost and complexity and may introduce latency. The benefits depend on the particular hardware and what the listener needs. Android’s USB digital audio guidance discusses the trade-offs between DAC designs.

Analog audio accessory mode

Some USB-C implementations can carry analog audio instead. The phone must support the mode, and prevalence across current phone models is not established by the technical explanation. This is another reason not to infer sound quality or compatibility from the port shape alone.

3.5 mm analog output

A 3.5 mm headphone socket sends an analog signal after the device’s internal DAC has converted the audio. The quality of that conversion and the headphone amplifier still matter, just as the DAC and amplifier in a USB-C adapter or headset matter in a USB setup.

Can you keep using 3.5 mm headphones with a USB-C-only phone?

Usually, you need a compatible USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter containing a DAC. Android’s adapter specification allows digital-to-analog adapters for the described route and does not support analog-only adapters. It covers stereo analog devices with and without microphones. Android’s USB-C-to-analog adapter specification sets out the supported path.

Samsung says newer Galaxy phones without a dedicated 3.5 mm socket require an adapter with a built-in DAC and cautions that third-party adapters should be DAC-compatible. Check the guidance for your specific model before buying. Samsung’s Galaxy adapter guidance explains its requirement.

USB-C iPads can connect USB-C wired headphones; Apple also identifies its USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter for connecting other speakers or headphones. Apple’s USB-C iPad connection guidance covers these options. For other devices, consult the manufacturer rather than assuming an adapter that works with one phone will work with another.

What to check before buying USB-C headphones or an adapter

  • Device compatibility: Look up the phone or tablet model’s manufacturer guidance. USB-C devices and accessories are not all electrically identical.
  • DAC requirement: If you are adapting 3.5 mm headphones to a USB-C-only device, verify that the adapter includes the digital-to-analog conversion your device requires.
  • Microphone and controls: Confirm support for the headset microphone, call functions, and any inline controls you use. Android’s adapter specification covers stereo audio devices with and without microphones, but check the particular product and host for feature support.
  • Output power: If your headphones need more drive than the phone or adapter provides, a separate USB DAC/headphone amplifier may be useful. It is an optional tool, not a requirement for ordinary listening.
  • Convenience: A USB-C connection may occupy the charging port. Consider whether you need to charge while listening and whether the device supports the required simultaneous use.
  • Cost and complexity: A separate audio device adds another accessory and compatibility questions. Buy one for a specific power or feature need, not because USB-C promises better sound.

Android’s documentation says compatible USB digital audio peripherals are automatically routed for playback and capture, and advises device vendors to document features and power requirements and test interoperability. That guidance is useful context, but checking support for your own phone and accessory remains the practical way to avoid surprises. Android’s USB audio documentation describes routing and interoperability considerations.

Is USB-C audio actually better?

It can be, when a particular USB-C headphone or DAC/amp provides an audio stage that better suits the headphones and listener. It can also be no better—or less convenient—than a well-implemented 3.5 mm output. Treat USB-C as a connection that enables different designs, not a sound-quality rating.
