Usability testing shows whether people in a defined user group can complete realistic tasks with a product, service, or design—and where they struggle. It matters because teams can find barriers while there is still time to change the design. A test provides evidence about particular users, goals, and conditions, not a universal score of whether something is “easy to use.”

What is usability testing?

Usability testing is a way to evaluate a product by asking representative users to perform representative tasks and observing what happens. NIST describes collecting both quantitative evidence, such as task time, errors, and completion, and qualitative evidence, such as participant comments and likes or dislikes: NIST’s usability-testing overview.

In practical terms, give people who represent the intended users realistic tasks, watch what they do, and use what you learn to improve the product or service. A test evaluates use; asking people whether they like an idea is not, by itself, a usability test.

ISO 9241-11:2018 defines usability as “the extent to which a system, product or service can be used by specified users to achieve specified goals with effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction in a specified context of use.” That context matters: the same design might work well for one audience and task but poorly for another. ISO’s standard provides definitions and concepts, not a step-by-step testing method; ISO lists the 2018 edition as current, last reviewed and confirmed in 2023: ISO 9241-11:2018.

Why does usability testing matter?

People may not find a feature, misunderstand a label, take an unintended route, or fail to finish a task. Watching an attempt can expose problems that a design review or a general question about satisfaction may miss. Teams can test a sketch, prototype, content, service, or live product, then revise and test again. Digital.gov’s guidance recommends choosing something users need to achieve their goals and using tests to learn how intuitive and adaptable a design is.

Testing early and repeatedly helps teams reduce uncertainty and identify obstacles while changes are still possible. Nielsen Norman Group recommends this approach in its overview of usability. Testing does not automatically increase revenue, conversion, or satisfaction; those outcomes depend on many factors beyond a usability study.

How to conduct a basic usability test

  1. Set a research question

Name the user goal and the uncertainty you need to resolve. Choose the specific product, service, content, sketch, or prototype to evaluate. For example: “Can first-time customers find the return instructions?” is more actionable than “Is this page good?”

    • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  2. Choose participants and realistic tasks

Recruit people who represent the intended users. Write scenarios that reflect real goals, and phrase task instructions neutrally. A task that gives away the expected control or path can prime someone and obscure whether the design communicates clearly. See Nielsen Norman Group’s practitioner guidance on usability testing.

  3. Prepare the session

Write a script, decide who will moderate and take notes, arrange the test environment or screen sharing, and obtain consent. Plan recruitment, scenarios, and what evidence to record. Digital.gov’s test-planning guidance covers these preparations.

  4. Observe without coaching

Ask participants to attempt each task. Think-aloud prompts can reveal what they expect or understand, but avoid steering them toward the route you intended. Digital.gov describes a usability test as observing users attempting to use a product or service while thinking out loud: plain-language usability-testing guidance.

  5. Record task evidence and debrief

Track whether the task was completed, errors, useful timing, observed behavior, and participant comments. After a task, ask neutral follow-up questions about what they expected or found confusing. Use screen recordings or screenshots only with appropriate consent and care for sensitive information.

  6. Find patterns, make changes, and retest

Connect each proposed change to observed evidence. Prioritize barriers that recur or prevent an important goal, then decide what to change and whether to test the revised design. A small exploratory study can uncover issues; it should not be presented as a precise estimate of how all users will behave.

What should you measure?

Choose measures that answer the research question. NIST lists task time, errors, successful completion, comments, and satisfaction-related feedback as examples; it does not provide a universal benchmark for these measures.

  • Completion: Did the participant achieve the task goal? Define in advance what counts as success, including whether help was needed.
  • Errors and missteps: What did the participant do that blocked progress, led to a wrong result, or required recovery?
  • Time and effort: How long did the task take, and where did the participant hesitate or repeat steps? Time needs context: a slower attempt may reflect careful reading rather than a design failure.
  • Observed behavior and comments: What did the participant try, expect, or misunderstand? Comments can help explain behavior, but they are not a substitute for observing task performance.
  • Satisfaction-related feedback: What did the participant report about the experience? Interpret this alongside the task evidence, not as a standalone usability verdict.

How to compare two designs

When the goal is to compare alternatives, give participants comparable tasks under comparable conditions. Digital.gov describes comparative tests in which participants work with versions and compare them. Look at:

  • Task success and error patterns for each version.
  • Time and effort on the same task.
  • Where participants hesitate or choose different paths.
  • What they understand and report about each version.
  • Whether participants and test conditions are a good match for the intended users and context.

A small qualitative comparison can reveal useful differences and explain why a design may be confusing. It does not establish broad statistical superiority by itself.

Common usability-test formats

  • Moderated, one-to-one: A facilitator can ask follow-up questions and observe context closely. It requires moderator and note-taking time.
  • Think-aloud: Participants verbalize expectations and interpretations while working. This can reveal confusion, but the moderator must avoid coaching.
  • Co-discovery: Two people work together, and their conversation can make their thinking visible.
  • Parallel independent sessions: Several participants work independently, followed by discussion. Digital.gov notes that enough note-takers are needed to observe each participant.
  • Comparative test: Participants try different versions to expose differences. Keep tasks and conditions comparable so the contrast is meaningful.

Choose a format based on whether you need to diagnose behavior, compare alternatives, or gather broader performance evidence, as well as the logistics and amount of facilitator interaction available. No single format suits every study.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Testing with the wrong audience: Recruit people who reflect the users relevant to the goal. State clearly who took part and what context the findings apply to.
  • Leading participants: Avoid task wording or moderator hints that reveal the intended answer. Neutral instructions make it easier to see whether the design itself guides people.
  • Confusing preference with usability: Ask about reactions if useful, but evaluate whether participants can achieve the goal as well.
  • Treating a small study as a population estimate: Describe observed issues and patterns; do not claim a precise prevalence or universal result without a suitable study design.
  • Reporting a number without its conditions: Explain the task, participant group, and test setup behind completion or timing figures. A time or success rate without context can mislead.
  • Collecting observations without acting on them: Tie findings to decisions, prioritize consequential barriers, and retest when the change warrants it.

If the test involves a website, screenshots can help document what participants saw. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its capture can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before taking the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of the target URL as WebP. Replace the URL and supply your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 screenshots per month on its free plan with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up free for ScreenshotNeo.
