A dedicated server is a physical machine reserved for one customer. It can make sense when an application needs exclusive hardware, predictable resources, or greater isolation and control—but it also brings more cost and operational responsibility than a VPS. To choose a U.S. server, start with your workload and audience location, then compare the actual hardware, management scope, service terms, and renewal price for a specific configuration.

One comparison page reports reviewing 19 providers and 44 plans, but its captured examples identify only 12 providers. The figures below are examples reported on that page, not independent performance results or guaranteed current quotes. Confirm inventory, configuration, location, and terms directly before ordering.

When does a dedicated server make sense?

With a dedicated server, the physical machine is reserved for one customer rather than sharing its CPU, RAM, and storage with other customers. That arrangement can suit high-traffic applications, large databases, or workloads that benefit from dedicated resources. It is not automatically faster or more reliable than every VPS: the right choice depends on the workload, the server configuration, and how well the system is operated.

A VPS may be more cost-effective and flexible when the application does not need dedicated hardware. Choose dedicated hosting when the benefits of exclusive resources or control justify both the higher recurring cost and the work of maintaining a server.

Which providers and example prices appear in the comparison?

The comparison page reports 19 providers and 44 plans, and says it checked its data from July 5 through September 17, 2026. It evaluates location, price including renewal, specifications for the price, uptime SLA and reliability, support, and money-back or billing terms. These are the publisher’s catalog counts and method—not a market-wide count or independent test. The captured page names the providers below; it does not establish the other seven names, so they are not inferred here. See the comparison page and its stated methodology.

Provider Example starting price reported on the comparison page Renewal price stated there
Akamai Cloud (Linode) $36/month Not stated
Vultr $120/month Not stated
DreamHost $165/month Not stated
Kamatera $19/month Not stated
Liquid Web $55.50/month $111/month
OVHcloud $147/month Not stated
Contabo $131.75/month $155/month
GreenGeeks $169/month Not stated
InMotion Hosting $35/month $49.99/month
InterServer $149/month Not stated
IONOS $93/month $103/month
HostArmada $81.95/month $163.90/month

These are source-reported entry examples, not like-for-like quotes: the page does not establish that each price buys equivalent hardware, bandwidth, management, or contract terms. It also reports catalog bands of $19–$99.99/month for entry plans, $109.50–$249.99/month for mid-range plans, and from $260/month for high-end plans. Treat all of these as checked-page examples; availability, configuration, and promotional terms can change.

Rackmount Sliding Rails Kit - for 1U-4U Chassis, 26" to 40" Depth
  • Adjustable mounting depth for rear posts from 26” to 40”
  • Slide length of 18” plus an additional 18” when slide is extended
  • The TP1812 rails are rated for 90 lbs maximum load capacity
  • Suitable for 1U to 4U mounted device height with universal assembly holes
  • The mounted device has to be a minimum of 10” in length

Other provider-authored comparison material reports different starting prices for some providers, and a separate provider comparison lists differing uptime guarantees. Those figures are not directly comparable without a named configuration and matching service terms. For a decision, request a quote for the same CPU, RAM, storage, transfer, location, and management scope from each candidate rather than ranking providers by an isolated starting price.

How should you choose a U.S. server location?

Choose a facility based on where most users connect from, and test routes from the ISPs and cities that matter to your audience. A provider’s advertised region does not establish the latency your users will experience; routing and the user’s network affect round-trip time. Ask for test IPs before committing if latency is important.

  • East Coast and Europe-facing users: New York and Northern Virginia are described as connectivity hubs in the comparison.
  • Central U.S. reach: Chicago and Dallas are presented as central options.
  • Western users: Los Angeles, Silicon Valley, and Seattle are listed as western options.
  • Southeastern users: Miami and Atlanta are listed as Southeastern options.

For a nationwide audience, a central server paired with a CDN may be sufficient; a two-region deployment on opposite coasts is another option when the application needs geographic coverage. The right design depends on traffic patterns and application architecture, not just a map. Confirm the exact metro and facility for the plan you intend to order.

What should you compare in each server plan?

Ask providers for the exact configuration and service description. Headline labels such as “dedicated,” “bare metal,” or “unmetered” do not answer the operational questions that determine whether a plan fits.

Tripp Lite SRSCREWS Rack Enclosure Server Cabinet Threaded Hole Hardware Kit
  • Threaded hole hardware kit - 50 each #12-24 screws
  • Fastens equipment to threaded hole rack mount rails
  • Compatible with all #12-24 threaded hole racks
  • CPU: Get the processor model and core count. Confirm whether listed cores are physical cores or vCPUs.
  • Memory: Compare RAM capacity and type, plus any limits or charges for upgrades.
  • Storage: Confirm drive type, usable capacity, redundancy, and upgrade options. Clarify whether a quoted capacity is raw or usable storage.
  • Network: Check port speed, included data transfer or the precise meaning of “unmetered,” upstream network details, DDoS mitigation terms, and private-network availability if required.
  • Management and access: Identify whether the plan is managed, semi-managed, or unmanaged. Ask about monitoring, operating-system maintenance, patches, backups, root access, IPMI or iLO access, and support hours.
  • Operations: Ask whether 24/7 remote hands can reboot a machine, replace a drive, or check cabling, and request response and hardware-replacement targets.
  • Reliability and security: Read the SLA scope, exclusions, and service-credit rules. Verify facility redundancy and the evidence behind any security or compliance claim.

A U.S. facility alone does not establish regulatory compliance. If a workload has specific obligations, verify the provider’s audited controls and obtain any required contractual commitment before placing data there.

Managed or unmanaged: who will operate the server?

Managed hosting generally shifts some operating work to the provider; unmanaged hosting leaves more of it to the customer. The boundary varies by plan, so do not assume that “managed” includes every task your team needs.

Model Typical responsibility split Best fit
Managed The provider may handle monitoring, operating-system updates, patches, and backups, subject to the plan’s scope. Teams that need provider help with routine system operations or do not want to own all maintenance.
Unmanaged The customer has more responsibility for server operations, despite having root access and dedicated hardware. Teams with the skills and time to maintain the operating system, security, monitoring, and recovery processes themselves.

Before ordering, get the included tasks and exclusions in writing. A provider-authored explanation of the management distinction is available in Liquid Web’s dedicated-server comparison; its provider comparisons and price claims should be treated as vendor-published material.

How do you calculate the real cost and assess the SLA?

Compare the full commitment, not just the first month displayed on a plan card. The comparison page’s examples show why: several listed starting prices have higher stated renewals, while other cards do not state a renewal price. A missing renewal figure is not evidence that the introductory price continues.

  • Ask for the introductory and recurring price for the exact configuration.
  • Check billing period, minimum term, setup fees, taxes, and whether any offer requires a commitment.
  • Price likely additions, such as extra storage, transfer, backups, management, or hardware upgrades.
  • Ask how upgrades are billed mid-contract and whether changing configuration requires migration or downtime.
  • For the SLA, confirm what is measured, what exclusions apply, how credits are calculated, and how to request them.

A headline uptime percentage is not enough to compare reliability: provider-authored comparisons can use different scopes and plan examples. Confirm whether the guarantee covers network availability, power, hardware, or another specific service, and review the remedy if the target is missed.

What should you ask before placing an order?

  1. Describe the workload. Share expected CPU, memory, storage, and transfer needs, including growth, and ask for a configuration quote.
  2. Confirm the facility. Get the U.S. metro for that plan and test a supplied IP from relevant user networks.
  3. Set the management boundary. Request a written list of included monitoring, patching, backups, support hours, remote-hands tasks, and exclusions.
  4. Calculate the contract cost. Confirm setup charges, term, introductory and renewal prices, add-ons, and upgrade costs.
  5. Review failure handling. Ask for SLA scope and credits, hardware-replacement targets, escalation routes, and what support does during an outage.
  6. Check compliance needs. Verify the required controls and contract terms for your workload rather than assuming a U.S. location is sufficient.
