If urlwatch is not reporting a page change, check its pipeline in order: confirm the command ran, verify the job and target, make sure the fetched content includes the change, inspect the current filter output, and then check diff and reporter settings. A missing alert alone does not show which step failed.
How urlwatch decides whether a page changed
urlwatch retrieves each job’s output, applies its configured filter, compares that result with the version retrieved previously, and invokes enabled reporters when it finds differences. Work through those stages in sequence: a failure or mismatch early in the pipeline can look like a comparison or notification problem later.
1. Confirm that urlwatch runs
urlwatch checks pages only when its command runs. Review the scheduler entry, the account that runs it, and the environment available to that account. Check the scheduled command’s output for errors, too. The official scheduling documentation gives an interval no more frequent than every 30 minutes as an introductory example; choose an interval that suits the monitoring need and the site.
2. Verify the job and its target
Run urlwatch --list to see the configured jobs and their indices. Jobs are stored in the YAML job list, urls.yaml; use urlwatch --edit to edit it. Confirm that the job exists and its URL points to the intended page or content.

A URL job retrieves what the web server serves. If the target text is added after page load by JavaScript, the server response may not contain it; check whether the job type matches the page before changing comparison settings.
3. Choose the right retrieval method

4. Inspect the content that is compared
Run urlwatch --test-filter with the job index or URL to preview the text produced by the current filter. If the changed text is missing from that output, adjust the job’s filter pipeline: filters transform content before comparison, so selecting the wrong element or removing relevant text can hide a real edit. The filter documentation describes the available configuration.
Do not test a new filter with an unchanged report
The stored snapshot was filtered when it was retrieved. Editing a filter does not retroactively reprocess that older snapshot, so an unchanged report is not a valid test of the current filter. The official configuration documentation says to use --test-filter to apply the current filter to the current page contents.

5. Check diff and display settings
A diff_filter can reduce a detected change to an empty diff. The configuration’s display.empty-diff option determines whether such a change is included. Separately, display.unchanged controls whether unchanged jobs are shown; new-job and error display are configurable as well. Check the relevant settings under the configuration’s display section, then verify that the reporter you expect is enabled.
6. Adjust browser readiness if content arrives late
A browser job can proceed at different navigation milestones using wait_until: load, domcontentloaded, networkidle, or commit. It can also wait for a locator with wait_for. The urlwatch documentation discourages networkidle and recommends relying on assertions for readiness instead. Choose a condition tied to the content you monitor, rather than assuming that page load means the target text is ready. See the browser job documentation.
