An HTTP 200 response means the request received a success status; it does not prove the page or API returned useful, correct application data. In Uptime Kuma, pair an appropriate status-code check with a keyword assertion for text or a JSON query for structured data. That way, a route that returns 200 but serves an error page, stale content, or an unexpected payload can still fail the monitor.

Why can a site return 200 and still be broken?

HTTP status and application correctness are different checks. A web server, reverse proxy, or application route can respond with 200 while returning a login screen instead of API data, a maintenance page, stale or incomplete information, or an error inside an otherwise valid response. These are general examples of the failure mode, not reports of a particular Uptime Kuma incident.

A status-only monitor can therefore pass even when the route does not meet its intended contract. To catch that gap, monitor the application route that matters and assert something meaningful in its response.

Which Uptime Kuma check should you use?

Response Useful assertion What it can catch
Text or HTML A distinctive, stable success phrase using the Keyword check The phrase is absent, which may indicate an unexpected page or response.
Structured JSON A query for a field and value using Json Query Expression A required field is missing or its value does not indicate the expected application state.
Any response where status matters Accepted status codes The response status falls outside the configured range; this alone does not validate the body.

The English interface includes both Keyword and Json Query Expression controls. Choose an assertion tied to a real, useful function. A phrase that also appears on an error page, or a JSON value unrelated to the operation users need, can create false confidence.

How to layer a monitor without assuming every route behaves alike

  1. Monitor the relevant URL. Use the application route whose behavior matters, rather than relying only on a server root or generic landing page.
  2. Set an appropriate status condition. Uptime Kuma’s internal API example stores accepted status codes as 200-299. Treat that as an example, not a universal setting: the right codes depend on the endpoint’s contract. The internal API documentation cautions that the API is primarily for Uptime Kuma’s own use and may change without notice.
  3. Add a body assertion. Use a stable keyword for text or a JSON query for structured data. The interface documents these controls, but exact menu paths and availability across versions are not established here.
  4. Choose retry behavior deliberately. The English interface describes an option labeled Only retry if status code check fails. When enabled, its explanation says: “If the status code check passes but the JSON query fails, the monitor will be marked as down immediately without retries.” Interpret alerts in light of that setting.
  5. Read response time as a separate signal. A route can be up but slow. Kuma heartbeat examples include status, message, and ping/response time; its Prometheus integration documents separate monitor_status and monitor_response_time metrics.

What a passing check can—and cannot—tell you

A passing status condition plus a passing content assertion gives stronger evidence about the configured route than status alone. It still does not prove every user journey works: one probe covers only its configured route, location, credentials, assertions, and schedule. For broader assurance, design separate checks around critical workflows and dependencies; that is an operational approach, not a product guarantee.

For teams already using metrics, Uptime Kuma documents a Prometheus integration with status and response-time metrics, along with endpoint, labels, configuration, and authentication context. See the Prometheus integration documentation for deployment details. Do not assume the endpoint is exposed identically or publicly in every installation.

Why might the public status page disagree with the dashboard?

Uptime Kuma’s status-page documentation says results are cached for five minutes and the page refreshes every five minutes. It also notes that status-page updates are less responsive than the dashboard. Treat a public status page as an external communication view, not as a live diagnostic console; consult the dashboard when investigating a current alert. See the status-page documentation.
