India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) processed 24.07 billion transactions worth ₹29.37 trillion in September 2026, according to figures attributed to NPCI by reports published on October 1. The totals were well above September 2025, although both volume and value slipped slightly from August’s record. An industry executive linked September’s higher daily transaction value to the start of the festival season, including Ganesh Chaturthi; that is an attributed explanation, not proof that festivals alone caused the change.
How much did UPI process in September 2026?
UPI recorded 24.07 billion transactions worth ₹29.37 trillion (₹29.37 lakh crore) during September, according to NPCI figures reported by Business Standard and Business Today on October 1, 2026.
The September figures were attributed to NPCI in those reports. The accessible extract of NPCI’s UPI product statistics showed data only through August 2026, so the September totals cited here are report-attributed rather than independently confirmed against a visible September row on that page.

The month-on-month dip does not cancel out the strong annual growth. September had 30 days, compared with August’s 31, and Business Standard noted that small monthly volume declines have often coincided with shorter months. That calendar difference is relevant context, but by itself it does not establish the full cause of the change.

What do the daily averages show?
Business Standard and Business Today reported September averages of 802 million transactions and ₹97,913 crore in transaction value per day. September’s daily value was above the roughly ₹96,000 crore daily level that Cashfree co-founder Reeju Datta said had held from April through August, even as payment counts grew. Daily averages help put the monthly totals in context, but they do not show which purchases drove the increase.
Did festive spending cause the increase?
Datta attributed the rise in daily value to the beginning of the festival season and pointed to Ganesh Chaturthi falling in mid-September. He said that, from April to August, UPI’s daily value had stayed around ₹96,000 crore while many new payments were small, then added: “In September, the extra payments people made were bigger than usual, which lifted the daily value clearly above that level,” according to the quote reproduced by Business Standard.

This is an industry executive’s interpretation of the figures, not evidence that festive spending alone caused the change. NPST managing director and CEO Deepak Chand Thakur offered a forward-looking view, saying digital payment activity was likely to grow as consumers use UPI for online and offline purchases during the festival season. That outlook is distinct from the reported September totals.
How does September fit into UPI’s annual growth?
For broader context, a Press Information Bureau release reproducing NPCI statistics reported 24,161.69 crore UPI transactions worth ₹314 lakh crore in financial year 2025–26. It gave year-on-year growth of 30.0% in volume and 20.59% in value. Those are financial-year totals and growth rates, not September’s calendar-month figures.

What was reported about UPI merchant charges?
Business Today reported that a framework was scheduled to begin on October 15, 2026, for certain person-to-merchant transactions above ₹2,000. As described in that October 1 report, payments up to ₹2,000 and merchants receiving up to ₹1 lakh per month in UPI receipts were outside the charge described. As of October 4, 2026, this was a report about an upcoming framework, not confirmation that a fee was already in effect.
