UPI averaged about 802 million transactions per day in September 2026, according to an October 2 report by Dainik Jagran English. That is a monthly daily average—not confirmation that UPI processed more than 800 million transactions on every day of the month.
What the 800 million milestone means
The reported figure is the September total divided into a daily average: Dainik Jagran English reported 24.07 billion transactions for the month, or approximately 802 million per day. It described September as the first month in which UPI’s monthly daily average passed 800 million.
This is different from saying UPI recorded at least 800 million transactions on a particular day. A monthly average does not reveal how many transactions occurred on any individual date, and the cited report does not establish that every day cleared the threshold.

Dainik Jagran English reported that UPI processed 24.07 billion transactions worth ₹29.37 trillion in September 2026. The report compared September’s volume with September 2025 and gave year-over-year growth of 22.6%; it put the earlier month’s value at ₹24.89 trillion.

Volume and value describe different things: volume counts transactions, while value is the total money transferred. The two figures should not be treated as interchangeable measures of UPI usage.
Why September’s average can rise while its total falls from August
The same report gave August totals of 24.51 billion transactions worth ₹29.82 lakh crore, compared with September’s 24.07 billion and ₹29.37 trillion (₹29.37 lakh crore). September therefore had fewer transactions in total, but one fewer calendar day. A lower monthly total can still produce a higher daily average when the month is shorter; the totals alone do not establish the exact daily distribution.

What the official NPCI statistics show
The NPCI UPI product-statistics page displayed monthly figures through August 2026 in the data surfaced for this story. Its August entry lists 24,508.96 million transactions, a transaction value of ₹29,82,355.95 crore, and 752 live banks. These are official August figures, not a confirmation of the September average.

Accordingly, the September milestone should be attributed to Dainik Jagran English’s October 2 report. The NPCI table available here does not independently verify September’s total or daily average. NPCI also notes that its monthly figures exclude transactions involving a debit and credit to the same account from August 2018 onward.

What UPI transactions include
UPI supports both person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2M) payments, as described in NPCI’s ecosystem-statistics glossary. The distinction illustrates that UPI serves transfers between people as well as payments to merchants. A historical split published for August 2025 is too old to describe the September 2026 transaction mix.
