Upgrading an HP desktop power supply is a fit and capacity decision before it is a performance decision. A higher wattage rating does not tell you whether a unit will physically fit your case, plug into your motherboard, or provide the GPU connectors your graphics card needs. Start with your exact HP product number and the part number of the power supply already installed, then check each item in this guide before you order anything.
Start with your exact model, not the product family
HP sells desktops under families such as Pavilion, ENVY, and OMEN, and a single family can contain several chassis designs with different power supplies. A family name is not enough to select a replacement. You need the full model identifier and the existing power supply’s part number.
Find the product number and the power supply part number
- Product number: Look for the label on the chassis or in the original documentation. Record it exactly, including letters and hyphens, such as 880-119na.
- Power supply part number: Read the label printed on the power supply itself. Only read it if you can do so without opening the power supply enclosure, which you should never do (see the safety section below).
- Official parts data: Use HP’s parts store, which offers a search by product number, part number, or serial number. HP identifies PartSurfer as its advanced part search. Confirm the listed supported parts for your exact product number before buying.
Why wattage alone does not settle compatibility
A replacement must pass four separate checks. Passing one does not mean the others are satisfied.
- Physical form factor and dimensions: The unit must fit the bay and mounting points in your specific case. Compare measured dimensions with the original unit and the case, not just the form factor name.
- Motherboard power connector: Many HP desktops use a standard 24-pin ATX connector, but some use a proprietary motherboard power connector. A standard ATX unit will not necessarily mate with a proprietary plug.
- Auxiliary and GPU power leads: Confirm the number and type of cables for your graphics card and any other add-in components. Adapters are not a safe default unless the manufacturer documents them for your model.
- Total system power demand: Estimate the draw of the complete system with its actual CPU, GPU, and other components, then choose a rating with headroom (covered below).
A pre-purchase check, step by step
- Record the full HP product number from the chassis label or original documentation.
- Record the installed power supply’s part number and rated output, if readable without opening the enclosure.
- Search HP’s parts store by product number and check which power supplies HP lists for that model.
- Measure the installed power supply’s length, width, and height, and compare them with the candidate unit’s specifications. Check the mounting hole positions too.
- Inspect the motherboard’s power connector and count the auxiliary cables you need, including GPU leads.
- Calculate the total system demand, add headroom, and compare the result with the candidate’s rated output.
- If HP documentation does not list the candidate, contact HP support or a qualified repair provider to confirm the exact part before you buy.
Two HP examples that show why no single replacement works
HP Support Community answers illustrate how differently HP desktops are built. They are model-specific examples, not general rules, and you should verify your own configuration against the same checks.

OMEN 880-119na: a standard ATX path
An accepted HP community answer for the OMEN 880-119na reports a 500W ATX power supply and describes an ATX replacement route. Even on this path, the same kind of answer still requires you to confirm physical dimensions and cable layout before buying. A common reader question for this model is “What can I replace the power supply with that will fit with no problem in my desktop ?” That wording is typical of the question, but it does not tell you how common the problem is. The answer is a model-specific fit check, not a generic recommendation.
ENVY TE01-1144: a proprietary 4-pin motherboard connector
A separate accepted answer for the ENVY TE01-1144 says the motherboard uses a proprietary 4-pin power connector rather than a standard 24-pin ATX connector. That means a generic ATX unit cannot simply be plugged in. The answer identifies possible HP part numbers for that case and recommends confirming fit with HP support before ordering. If your HP desktop has a proprietary connector, a genuine or HP-confirmed part is the safer route.
GPU upgrades: the power figures to use, and their limits
When people upgrade a graphics card, they usually want to know whether the existing supply can carry it. HP’s OMEN upgrade article gives the following figures for three cards. Treat them as HP’s numbers for its own system context, not as universal requirements.

| Graphics card | GPU power | Total system requirement | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 | 450W | 850W | HP OMEN upgrade article, framed around 2025, accessed 2026 |
| NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 | 320W | 750W | HP OMEN upgrade article, framed around 2025, accessed 2026 |
| NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti | 285W | 700W | HP OMEN upgrade article, framed around 2025, accessed 2026 |
The same article lists a standard OMEN 25L power supply at 500W. These values do not replace the checks above. A 850W total requirement for an RTX 4090 setup, for example, still says nothing about whether your case has room for a unit with the right GPU cables.
Sizing headroom with HP’s 20–30% guidance
HP’s general OMEN hybrid-upgrade article advises adding 20–30% headroom above your calculated system needs, as of access in 2026. This is editorial guidance from HP, not a measured result or an industry standard. As a worked example, if your calculated demand is 600W, 20% headroom gives 720W and 30% gives 780W, so a unit rated in that range would meet the guidance.
What a PSU upgrade will and will not change
A power supply upgrade solves a capacity or compatibility problem. It is not automatically a performance upgrade. If the existing supply cannot carry a new graphics card, replacing it can be the step that makes the card usable. If the existing supply is adequate, a bigger unit will not make the system faster.

No independent published statistic or controlled efficiency measurement was found in the sources reviewed, so this guide does not quantify electricity savings or claim a performance gain from changing the power supply alone. Any efficiency or performance expectation should be tested against your own hardware and usage.
Genuine HP part or third-party ATX unit?
Use this comparison to decide between the two routes. Where a value is not established by HP’s own material, the table says so.
| Factor | Genuine HP replacement | Third-party ATX unit |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmation for your product number | Listed in HP’s parts lookup for your model, if present | Not confirmed unless HP documentation or HP support confirms it for your exact model |
| Fit and dimensions | Designed for the HP chassis; still measure your case | Must be measured against your case; not stated by HP for most models |
| Motherboard connector | Matches the HP design | Standard 24-pin ATX only; not compatible with proprietary connectors such as the 4-pin plug described for the ENVY TE01-1144 |
| GPU power leads | Matches the HP design | Verify cable type and count for your graphics card |
| Efficiency certification, warranty, noise, modular cabling | Not stated in the sources reviewed | Not stated in the sources reviewed; verify for each candidate model |
HP’s OMEN hybrid article names example tiers of 650W, 850W, and 1000W+ and mentions third-party units. Those are broad system categories and examples from an editorial article, not an HP-approved list of compatible models.

Safety and service limits
HP’s general servicing guidance is clear on the basic rule. Disconnect the power cord before you open the computer. HP’s guide states:
“Never open the cover while the power cord is attached. You might damage your computer or be injured by the spinning fan blades.”

“To avoid the risk of fire and electrical shock, do not try to replace the fan inside the power supply by yourself.”
If the power supply fan is noisy or failing, contact HP support rather than dismantling the unit. Stop and contact HP support or a qualified technician if you are unsure about connector type, physical fit, or handling a power supply safely.
The safest path for proprietary-connector models is a genuine HP part or a unit HP support has confirmed for your product number. For standard ATX models, a third-party unit can be a reasonable option, but only after every check in this guide has passed.
