BDXL is an extension of recordable Blu-ray that adds layers to increase capacity. The announced configurations are 100GB triple-layer discs, available as write-once BD-R or rewritable BD-RE, and 128GB quadruple-layer write-once BD-R discs. Using BDXL requires a drive or recorder that explicitly supports it, so a disc’s capacity alone does not tell you whether your hardware can use it.

What BDXL is

BDXL is a recordable Blu-ray specification that extends capacity by stacking more recording layers on a disc. The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) announced the finalized specifications on June 25, 2010. The International Organization for Standardization later published ISO/IEC 30193:2021, which independently lists the corresponding recordable and rewritable media configurations, so the format is documented in both an industry announcement and a dated international standard.

CyberLink’s support material describes BDXL as multi-layer recordable BDAV media and refers to UDF 2.5 and 2.6 file system versions. That is a useful secondary explanation of how the media is used in software, but the BDA format documents are the primary reference for the specification itself.

Capacity and media configurations

The table below lists the configurations announced by the BDA in 2010 and the matching entries in ISO/IEC 30193:2021.

Configuration Layers Recording type Stated capacity Standards listing
BDXL 100GB BD-R Triple-layer Write-once 100 GB (BDA, 2010) 100.0 Gbytes recordable media (ISO/IEC 30193:2021)
BDXL 100GB BD-RE Triple-layer Rewritable 100 GB (BDA, 2010) 100.0 Gbytes rewritable media (ISO/IEC 30193:2021)
BDXL 128GB BD-R Quadruple-layer Write-once 128 GB (BDA, 2010) 128.0 Gbytes recordable media (ISO/IEC 30193:2021)

These are format capacities, not measured results from particular discs. The 128GB configuration is described by the BDA only as write-once BD-R, so do not assume a rewritable 128GB option exists.

Will your drive read or write BDXL?

BDXL is not a safe assumption for every Blu-ray device. The BDA states that hardware newly designed for BDXL would be able to play or record the new media, and that such recorders can also be designed to play the existing 25GB and 50GB Blu-ray formats. Its FAQ also states that BD-R requires a dedicated Blu-ray recorder or computer disc drive. Compatibility is therefore a property of the specific device, not of the Blu-ray name on the box.

Work through these checks before buying discs or assuming an existing drive will work:

  1. Find the exact model number. Look on the drive or in its settings or system information, not only the product family name.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s specification sheet for BDXL support. Confirm that the listing names BDXL explicitly rather than only 25GB or 50GB Blu-ray.
  3. Confirm read, write, or both. A device may read BDXL discs but not record them. Note whether the write support covers the media type you plan to use, such as BD-R or BD-RE.
  4. Check the burning software. If your recording software lists BDXL support, confirm the version you have. Software that cannot format or write the disc will fail regardless of the drive.
  5. Run a test before you rely on the setup. Write a small set of files to one disc, then read that disc back on the same drive and, if it matters for your archive, on a second drive. Only after a successful read-back should you commit large data to the workflow.

An ordinary Blu-ray player should not be assumed to play BDXL recordable media. A general statement that compatible hardware can read or record BDXL does not establish that any given player, software stack or disc will work.

What BDXL was designed for

The BDA’s 2010 announcement targeted BDXL primarily at commercial segments with substantial archiving needs, naming broadcasting, medical, and document-imaging enterprises. It also described possible consumer use for recording HD broadcast and satellite programming in markets where set-top recorders are used. These were the association’s intended application areas when the format was announced. They are not evidence of how widely those uses are practised today.

The BDA’s launch materials included a promotional statement from Victor Matsuda, then chair of the Blu-ray Disc Association Global Promotions Committee: “By using the existing Blu-ray™ technologies, we have created a long-term and stable solution for archiving large amounts of sensitive data, video and graphic images.” That is the association’s 2010 position. It is not a measured media-lifetime result.

Choosing between configurations

Three practical questions narrow the choice:

  • Do you need to overwrite the disc? If yes, the 100GB BD-RE is the only rewritable BDXL configuration named in the BDA and ISO materials. If you want a permanent record, a write-once BD-R suits that purpose better because the content cannot be altered after recording.
  • Do you need the largest capacity? The 128GB quadruple-layer BD-R provides the most data per disc among the announced configurations, but it is write-once and requires a drive that supports that specific capacity.
  • Is your device confirmed for the exact media? Choose the configuration only after the drive’s specification sheet confirms support for that media type. A larger disc that your drive cannot write gives you no benefit.

Archiving and longevity: what is and is not established

The sources behind this guide establish the format’s capacities, its layer counts and its recording types. They do not establish a current adoption rate, a current market-wide availability figure, or an independently tested lifespan for any particular BDXL disc. The “long-term and stable” wording from the 2010 BDA statement should therefore be read as the promotional intent of the format, not as verified durability.

For an archive, do not depend on one disc or one drive. Keep a second copy on separate media, record which drive and software wrote each disc, and periodically read discs back to confirm the data is still readable.

Before you buy

This guide does not list current prices, stock levels, brands or specific models of BDXL discs or recorders. Those change, and a listing that appears to match a configuration may not state BDXL support for the drive you own. Before purchase, confirm the drive’s BDXL read and write support from its manufacturer’s specifications, then match the disc configuration to that confirmed support.

Searching for a “100GB BDXL BD-R” disc is a reasonable starting point, but check the product page for the stated layer count, recording type and capacity before you buy.
