Can I use a universal charger for my laptop? Yes, if the laptop’s exact model accepts charging through the port you plan to use and the charger supports the required power profile. A USB-C plug alone does not prove compatibility. An OEM charger is usually the simpler choice for a proprietary connector or model-specific power needs; a compatible USB-C Power Delivery (PD) charger can be a convenient backup or cross-device option.

Will a USB-C charger work with my laptop?
Only if the laptop’s particular USB-C port supports charging input. USB-C describes the connector, not a guarantee that every port can receive power. Microsoft notes that slow-charging warnings can result from an underpowered or incompatible charger, or from using a port that does not charge the device. Check the laptop’s manual or support page for the specific port’s capabilities and charging instructions: Microsoft’s USB Type-C FAQ and USB Type-C system capabilities.
Do not confuse a laptop port that supplies power to accessories with one that accepts charging power. For example, Dell’s cited page describes power delivery from certain laptop ports to attached devices; it is not a general guide to charging a Dell laptop from a USB-C adapter: Dell’s USB-C power-delivery guidance.

Compare the laptop’s model-specific minimum and recommended charger requirements with the USB-C charger’s supported voltage and current profiles—not just a headline wattage. Voltage and current together determine the available power, and the charger must support a profile the laptop can use. The laptop maker’s requirements take precedence over a general rule such as “USB-C chargers work.”

Requirements differ even between laptop models
Lenovo’s ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 documentation says a USB-C charger, dock, or display source should provide at least 20 V and 2.25 A to power that model. That is a model-specific requirement, not a universal minimum: ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 USB-C power input.
Lenovo’s Legion 5 15APH9 documentation lists tested Lenovo USB-C PD charger ratings of 20 V at 4.75 A, 5 A, 6.75 A, or 7 A. It says other brands with the same ratings should work, while warning that the rear USB-C connector is not designed as the primary power input. Those ratings and that warning apply to this Legion model; they should not be transferred to another laptop: Legion 5 15APH9 USB-C PD guidance.

Surface requirements also vary by model, with Microsoft listing minimum and fast-charging recommended wattage for individual devices: Surface charging requirements and power supplies.
Account for the cable and connected devices
For higher-power USB-C charging, check that the cable is rated for the power the laptop requires. If you use a multiport charger, look at its output allocation when several ports are occupied: Lenovo’s 67 W GaN three-port charger is rated for up to 67 W on one USB-C port, but its output allocations change with simultaneous use. The charger’s total rating does not mean every connected device can draw that amount at once: Lenovo 67W GaN USB-C Charger specifications.

What happens if the charger is underpowered?
A laptop may charge slowly, display a charging warning, or fail to gain charge while it is doing demanding work. The result depends on the laptop, charger, port, and workload: a source that can replenish the battery while the computer is idle may not supply enough power to sustain active use. Lenovo specifically cautions that the Legion 5 15APH9 may not receive enough power from a USB-C source during operation, which can affect charging or full performance.
When is an OEM charger the better choice?
- The laptop uses a proprietary connector. A USB-C charger—and especially a passive adapter—should not be assumed to work with a barrel, slim-tip, or other model-specific input. Choose an adapter specified as compatible with the exact model and follow the manufacturer’s guidance.
- The manufacturer sets model-specific requirements. If the laptop’s documented power needs or charging behavior make matching uncertain, the specified OEM adapter is the lower-guesswork option.
- You need the intended power behavior. An alternate charger that supplies less power may not keep up during demanding use, even if it can charge the computer in lighter conditions.
When is a universal USB-C PD charger worth considering?
- The laptop explicitly supports USB-C charging. Confirm the correct port and the exact model’s requirements first.
- You want one charger for supported devices. A compatible USB-C PD adapter may also serve other devices, subject to their charging needs and the charger’s port-sharing limits.
- You need a travel or backup option. A third-party adapter can be convenient when its output profiles, cable, and port compatibility meet the laptop’s requirements.
Neither category is automatically smaller, cheaper, safer, faster, or more reliable than the other. Those comparisons depend on the particular adapters and devices; the manufacturer documentation cited here does not establish a general winner for size, price, reliability, efficiency, heat, or longevity.

How to check compatibility before buying
- Find the exact laptop model. Use its manufacturer support page or manual rather than relying only on the brand name or a USB-C symbol.
- Verify charging input on the port. Confirm that the particular USB-C port accepts power, not merely that it has a USB-C connector.
- Match protocol and output. Check that the charger supports the required charging protocol and voltage/current profile, and meets the model’s minimum or recommended wattage.
- Check the cable rating. Make sure the cable can carry the power required by the laptop.
- Consider how you use the laptop. If it must charge during demanding work, do not assume a lower-power adapter that works while idle will sustain it under load.
- Check multiport output sharing. Confirm what power remains available to the laptop when other devices are connected.
- Use an exact-model adapter for proprietary inputs. Do not assume a USB-C-to-barrel or similar passive adapter makes an otherwise incompatible charger suitable.
Third-party charging is not established here as automatically voiding a warranty. For a specific warranty question, consult the terms that apply to your laptop and region.
