A Unity 6 Android build can log errors and still leave the Unity Editor process with exit code 0. That code alone does not prove the build succeeded. Check Unity’s build verdict, the build report, and the APK or AAB your project expects; then trace the first actionable error to the stage that produced it. The right interpretation depends on your Unity patch version and whether you used the Editor, Unity’s CLI build profile, or a custom build method.
Why an Android build can show errors and still exit 0
Unity’s command-line behavior distinguishes built-in builds from builds run through a custom --execute-method. For a built-in build using a profile, the CLI uses Unity’s terminal build verdict if the log contains one; its documentation cautions that the Editor process exit code alone is not enough. If there is no terminal verdict, the CLI falls back to the process code. With --execute-method, the method controls the exit behavior, so it must decide whether the build is acceptable and return an appropriate code. Unity’s Build and run test reference describes this distinction.
As a result, “exit 0” describes the process status, not necessarily the outcome your project or CI pipeline should accept. A logged error may warrant investigation even if the build report, terminal verdict, or artifact looks successful; conversely, the number alone cannot identify a failure cause.

Record the full Unity version, operating system, and route before comparing logs or changing tooling. Unity’s Android behavior and error handling have changed across releases, so “Unity 6” is not a precise enough version for diagnosis. The release notes list changes across specific 6000.x releases: Unity 6000.1.17f1 to 6000.3.2f1 release notes.

| Build route | Who determines the command-line outcome? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Editor Build button | The Editor process is not, by itself, proof that the Android build succeeded. | Read the full Editor log, inspect the build result, and verify the expected artifact. |
| Unity CLI build profile | Unity CLI uses a terminal build verdict when one is present; otherwise it falls back to the process exit code. | Check the terminal verdict as well as the log and artifact. |
Custom --execute-method |
The custom method’s exit behavior determines the method’s result. | Inspect the BuildReport and make the method return a failure code when project policy considers the build unacceptable. |
Trace the first error to its build stage
Unity generates an Android Gradle project from project resources, code libraries, plug-ins, Gradle and manifest templates, then applies relevant settings and runs Android project modification callbacks before invoking Gradle. The merged Android App Manifest combines Unity’s manifest with plug-in manifests. An error during generation or a callback is a different diagnostic case from a Gradle failure or an invalid final package. Unity’s 2023.2 manual explains the process in How Unity builds Android applications.
- Capture the context. Note the complete Unity 6000.x patch identifier, operating system, and whether you built through the Editor, a CLI profile, or a custom method.
- Preserve the complete log. Locate the first relevant error and identify the stage that emitted it. Later messages may be consequences of an earlier failure.
- Check the result Unity reported. For a custom method, inspect the
BuildReportresult and error count, then apply your CI policy explicitly. For a built-in CLI profile build, use the terminal build verdict when present rather than gating only on the Editor process code. - Verify the output. Confirm the expected APK or AAB exists and inspect project-critical contents, such as required manifest values. Define those assertions from your application’s requirements.
- Investigate the first actionable Android error. Use the detailed message to determine whether the issue is resource packaging, manifest merging, duplicate classes, tooling, or something else. Do not assume a cause from the fact that the process returned 0.
Common Android errors to investigate
These are documented failure classes, not diagnoses of a particular project. Use the specific console message and first failing step to decide whether one applies.
Resource packaging: “Failed to re-package resources”
Unity’s troubleshooting guide says this error occurs when AAPT fails and is often caused by missing or duplicate resources in Android plug-ins. Follow the console details to identify the resource and the plug-in or project input that supplies it. The guidance is in Unity’s legacy Troubleshooting Android development manual.
Manifest merge conflicts
A plug-in manifest can conflict with Unity’s main manifest, including through incompatible attributes. Inspect the merge error for the conflicting attribute and identify which manifest contributes each value before changing templates or plug-in settings.
Duplicate Java classes
A Java plug-in included twice can cause duplicate classes during DEX conversion. Use the build output to find the duplicate class and trace which dependencies or plug-ins include it.
Tooling or patch-specific behavior
Unity 6 release notes record changes involving the Android Gradle Plugin and Gradle, SDK and build tools, Android build logging, and build error handling. Check the notes for the exact Editor patch in use rather than assuming a fix or known issue applies to every Unity 6 project: Unity 6000.1.17f1 to 6000.3.2f1 release notes.

Make a custom build method fail when the report fails your policy
A custom --execute-method build must make its own decision about success. Read the returned BuildReport, examine its result and errors, and deliberately exit with a failure code if the report or project-specific artifact checks do not meet your CI policy. Do not treat a zero process code as a substitute for those checks: Unity’s CLI reference assigns exit behavior to the custom method.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDefine “unacceptable” for the project rather than assuming every logged message is fatal. For example, a pipeline can require a successful report, the expected package file, and specific manifest values that the application depends on. The precise assertions are project-specific.

What can be concluded without the log and report
An individual report dated September 7, 2026, describes Unity 6000.4.0f1 batch-mode builds on macOS where a successful process status coexisted with BuildReport errors or an unmet build expectation. It recommends evaluating the report and checking the APK. This is a case report, not evidence that every Unity 6 build or every logged error behaves the same way: Indie Core Dev’s Unity 6 Android build case report.
Without the project’s Unity patch, invocation, complete log, build report, Gradle output, and artifact, the cause cannot be determined. The available evidence does not establish whether a particular case involves a callback exception, an error that did not make the report fail, an ignored setting, an asynchronous operation, or a separate Gradle or plug-in problem. Treat these as possibilities to test against the actual build outputs, not assumptions.
