A focused unit test can therefore be part of a regression run when it is rerun after a change to check that previously working behavior still works.
What is the difference between unit testing and regression testing?
A unit test checks a small piece of code—often a function or method—in relative isolation. What counts as a “unit” varies by codebase and testing practice; the useful distinction is that the test focuses on a local piece of behavior rather than an entire user workflow. Microsoft’s .NET unit testing guidance recommends fast, isolated, repeatable tests that avoid infrastructure dependencies.
Regression testing is defined by its purpose and timing, not by the size of the test. ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-1:2022 defines it as testing after a modification to check whether failures have appeared in unmodified parts of the test item or its operating environment. In other words, it asks whether a change broke something that was not meant to change. See the ISO standard.
| Question | Unit test | Regression test |
|---|---|---|
| What does the label describe? | The scope of the test: a small piece of code, usually isolated. | The purpose of the run: checking for unintended effects after a modification. |
| When is it used? | Whenever developers run it to check the local behavior. | After a change, when it is selected to check that existing behavior has not been damaged. |
| Can the same test fit both descriptions? | Yes. Its scope remains local. | Yes. Rerunning it after a change gives it a regression-checking purpose. |
Why can the same feature be tested twice?
Two different checks may cover the same feature for different reasons—or at different scopes. A developer may first run a unit test to check a local rule, then include that same test in a broader regression run after changing nearby code. The test has not changed category: it is still a unit test by scope, and on that later run it also helps detect regression.

One test, two useful descriptions
Suppose a discount calculation has a unit test for a boundary value. A developer adds a new promotion and reruns the existing test. It still checks the calculation locally, while also checking that the new work did not alter the old boundary behavior. Microsoft notes that unit tests can be rerun after a build or even after a line of code changes; that is one reason unit tests can contribute to regression checking.
Separate tests at different scopes
The same change can also call for distinct checks. The discount unit test can verify the calculation rule, while an integration test checks how the promotion works with checkout and tax, and a UI or system test checks whether the customer sees the correct total through the purchase flow. A local test cannot establish that those connected parts still work together.

A test for a bug that must not return
After a defect is fixed, teams often add a test that captures the failure so it can be detected if it returns. The Software Sustainability Institute’s introduction to unit testing describes this use of unit and integration tests following new functionality or a fix. Such a test may be a regression check when run after later changes, even if it was originally added to verify one particular bug.
Regression testing is not the same as retesting
These terms describe different questions. Retesting (also called confirmation testing) checks whether a particular fix corrected the reported fault. Regression testing checks whether other, unmodified parts were adversely affected by the change. ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-1:2022 makes this distinction explicit and notes that regression testing often accompanies retesting.

How to choose regression coverage after a change
“Run regression tests” does not have to mean rerun every test in the project after every edit. The right cases depend on the modified item and the change’s likely effects, as ISO’s standard explains. NASA’s Software Engineering Handbook guidance on regression testing treats it as part of planning and executing software changes. The following selection approach is practical guidance, not a universally mandated sequence.
- Identify the change and its direct behavior. Run focused unit tests for the changed logic, including boundary cases and previously failing cases that the change may affect.
- Map dependencies and interfaces. If the change affects how components exchange data or call one another, select integration tests that exercise those connections.
- Check user-visible workflows when relevant. If the change touches a UI, navigation, or end-to-end behavior, include tests for the affected workflow. Apple’s Xcode testing guidance describes using a mix of fast unit tests, fewer integration tests, and UI tests for common use cases; that is Apple-platform guidance, not a universal ratio.
- Include performance checks for performance-sensitive changes. When a change affects a critical performance region, consider performance regression coverage. Apple specifically recommends performance tests for regression coverage of such regions.
- Choose a run that balances speed with useful coverage. Fast, isolated tests give quick feedback; broader checks add confidence where the change could affect connected components or complete workflows. Select based on plausible impact rather than treating every test as equally relevant.
The labels help explain what a test covers and why it is being run, but neither label alone proves that the overall change is safe. A unit test can catch a local regression; confidence in connected behavior requires tests that exercise the relevant connections and workflows.
