1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA unit test checks one software component or method against expected behavior, usually without involving infrastructure such as a database, filesystem, or network. Strong unit tests are fast, isolated, repeatable, self-checking, and straightforward to maintain. They can catch regressions and make intended behavior explicit, but they do not show that separate components work together or that the whole application is correct.
What is a unit test?
A unit test exercises an individual component or method—sometimes called a unit of work—that developers can control. The key question is whether that unit produces the expected observable result for a particular scenario.
The exact boundary of a “unit” varies with software design and team conventions. A small method may be the unit in one codebase; a cohesive component may be the useful unit in another. The practical distinction is that a unit test isolates the behavior being checked rather than testing its connection to external infrastructure.
A unit test as an executable example
A clear test name and assertion can document what the software is expected to do for an input or condition. Microsoft’s .NET guidance recommends names that identify the method under test, the scenario, and the expected behavior. For example, a name might communicate that applying a discount to an eligible order returns the reduced total. The test both describes that expectation and checks it when run.

How is a unit test different from an integration test?
The difference is scope. A unit test checks one controlled unit of behavior; an integration test checks whether two or more components work together. Integration tests may involve databases, filesystems, networks, or other infrastructure.
| Test type | Main question | Typical scope |
|---|---|---|
| Unit test | Does this component or method behave as expected for this scenario? | An individual unit, with external dependencies isolated where practical. |
| Integration test | Do connected components work together correctly? | Two or more components, potentially including infrastructure. |
A unit suite cannot replace integration coverage. A component may pass its isolated tests while still failing when connected to a real database or another service—for example, because of a mismatched contract or configuration. Microsoft’s engineering guidance likewise notes that dependency changes can introduce problems unit tests do not expose, which is why integration or functional checks belong in the broader test strategy.
What makes a good unit test?
Microsoft’s .NET best-practices guidance identifies qualities that make tests dependable and useful. Applied to a test suite, they help keep feedback quick and make failures easier to act on.

- Fast: Unit tests should run quickly enough to be useful during regular development and repeated checks.
- Isolated: A test should focus on the behavior under test rather than depend on unrelated tests or external infrastructure.
- Repeatable: Given unchanged code and inputs, a test should produce a consistent outcome rather than rely on unstable external conditions.
- Self-checking: It should report pass or failure automatically, without a person needing to interpret output manually.
- Written close to the code: Creating tests as behavior is developed makes the expected outcomes available when they are most useful.
Start with a scenario and an observable result
Choose behavior that matters, identify an input or condition, and state the expected result. Then make the test assert that result. A test that merely invokes code without checking an outcome may run successfully while failing to protect the behavior it is meant to describe.
Keep infrastructure out of unit tests where practical
Databases, filesystems, and network services can slow tests and make them more brittle. Isolating these dependencies helps keep a unit test focused; use integration tests to verify that the real components and infrastructure work together.
Use test doubles deliberately
A test double substitutes for a dependency so the unit can be exercised in isolation. Terms such as stub, mock, and fake are not used identically in every tool or source. In classic xUnit and test-double terminology, a stub supplies data, a mock verifies interactions, and a fake is a working alternative implementation. Microsoft also documents broader usage in .NET. Explain what a chosen double does in your test rather than assuming every reader or framework uses the same vocabulary.

What unit tests can—and cannot—tell you
Rerunning unit tests after a code change helps reveal regressions in the behavior those tests cover. Well-named tests also give developers executable examples of expected behavior and can make design assumptions more visible.
Passing unit tests do not prove that an entire application works: they do not, by themselves, verify connections between components or real infrastructure. Keep integration or functional tests in the overall strategy for those questions.
Use code coverage as a diagnostic
Coverage indicates how much code was exercised by a test run. It does not establish whether the tests made meaningful assertions, whether important cases were covered, or whether the software is high quality. Microsoft’s coverage guidance warns against treating a percentage as a quality measure on its own; a high target cannot guarantee correctness.

Choosing a unit-testing framework
There is no universal framework choice supported across every language and workflow. Choose one that fits the project’s language and ecosystem, integrates with the team’s runner, IDE, and CI process, and provides suitable assertions and ways to organize tests and setup.
.NET
Microsoft’s .NET overview lists MSTest, NUnit, TUnit, and xUnit.net. It distinguishes the test platform, which discovers and runs tests and communicates with tools, from the test framework, which provides the APIs and attributes used to author them. The dotnet test CLI is a route for running test projects, including in scripted CI/CD workflows. Microsoft also names Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code, and Rider as IDEs with testing interfaces. Confirm compatibility details in the current documentation for the framework and platform versions used by your project.
C++
GoogleTest is Google’s C++ testing and mocking framework. Its primer covers test suites, assertions that report failures, and independent, repeatable tests, with support across operating systems and compiler configurations. It can be used for other kinds of tests too; it is not limited to unit testing.

Python
In pytest 8.2 documentation, fixtures are named, reusable setup dependencies. They can be composed, scoped, and parametrized, and support teardown. A fixture error can mean the test could not be attempted, which is different from a test that ran and failed an assertion. Check the documentation for the version installed in your project before relying on version-specific behavior.
Where ScreenshotNeo fits—and where it does not
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, made by Yorker Media. A screenshot API can help test systems that need a rendered page image, but it does not replace unit-testing frameworks or integration checks. For a UI workflow, it can serve as a screenshot-capture component alongside tests of application behavior.
ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request with a URL and can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For capture workflows, its features include full-page screenshots with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, device and viewport options, and custom CSS or JavaScript. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.
