Unexpected Keyboard lets you customize individual Android keyboard keys: a key can produce one character or action when tapped and different outputs when swiped toward a corner. You define those behaviors in a custom XML layout. Google’s Gboard help documents personalization such as themes, sound, vibration, and emoji size, but not this kind of per-key remapping. That is a difference in the controls documented by the two projects, not a claim that Gboard has no customization.
What Unexpected Keyboard lets you change
Unexpected Keyboard is an Android virtual keyboard, not a physical keyboard. Its distinctive approach is to place extra characters and actions on keys that you reach with directional swipes. The project says it was originally designed for programmers using Termux and is also intended for everyday use. See the project README and its Google Play listing.
A custom layout can define the keyboard name and writing system, arrange rows and keys, and set each key’s tap action and directional swipe actions. In the layout format, c specifies what a key does when tapped; compass properties such as n, se, and sw specify actions for swipes in those directions. You can also adjust key width and spacing, and use a <modmap> to change modifier-key behavior. The project’s custom-layout guide documents the format.
How to create a custom layout
- Open Unexpected Keyboard’s settings. Choose an existing layout to modify or add an alternate layout.
- Choose “Custom layout.” Edit the layout’s XML to set key positions and the actions for taps and directional swipes.
- Save and select the layout. Check that the keys and gestures match the behavior you want.
- Keep a separate copy of the XML. The project warns that edits stored only in the app can be lost if you install a build from a different source with a different signature.
If you would rather not start by editing XML directly, the project also documents a web-based layout editor. You can copy its output and paste the XML into the app; using the editor is optional.

Which keyboard fits your needs?
Choose Unexpected Keyboard if you want per-key control
It is the better-documented fit here if your priority is assigning custom tap and swipe outputs to individual keys and you are willing to create or maintain a layout. The XML format gives you control over placement and actions, but that flexibility brings setup work compared with adjusting a few visible preferences.

Consider Gboard if its documented personalization is what you need
If you want to change themes, key-tap sound, vibration, or emoji size, Google documents those controls for Gboard. Those settings address appearance and feedback rather than the per-key behavior editing described in Unexpected Keyboard’s guide.
Check your own everyday requirements
The cited documentation does not establish a winner for typing accuracy, predictive text, language coverage, accessibility, or speed. Consider the languages and correction behavior you rely on, any accessibility needs, and whether maintaining custom XML is practical for your everyday typing before switching.

Android compatibility
F-Droid’s listing for Unexpected Keyboard version 2.1.0 (build 56), added September 9, 2026, states that Android 5.0 or newer is required for that listed build. Requirements may differ across distribution channels, so check the current F-Droid listing or the relevant store listing for the version you plan to install.
