Before undoing a Git commit, check whether it has been shared and decide what should happen to its changes. For a commit already pushed or shared, use git revert <commit> to add a new commit that reverses it. For an unpublished latest commit, reset or amend can change local history; choose the option that preserves, replaces, or discards your work.

First: has the commit been shared?

If other people may have based work on the commit, avoid rewriting the shared history. Use git revert, which records a new commit that applies the inverse of the earlier change. This keeps the original commit in history and makes the correction visible to collaborators.

If the commit exists only in your local branch, you can consider moving the branch tip with git reset or replacing the latest commit with git commit --amend. Those operations change local history, so do not use them on a commit that has already been made public. The Git Project’s Git User Manual puts it this way: “If you make a commit that you later wish you hadn’t, there are two fundamentally different ways to fix the problem.”

Second: what should happen to the work?

Situation Command Result
The commit is shared and its changes should be reversed git revert <commit> Adds a new commit reversing the selected commit; existing history remains intact.
The latest local commit should be undone, with its work kept for editing or recommitting git reset --soft HEAD^ Moves the branch tip back while retaining the work in the index and working tree.
The latest local commit should be replaced with a corrected commit or message git commit --amend Replaces the latest commit with a new one. Use only while that commit is unpublished.
The latest local commit and its tracked changes should be removed git reset --hard HEAD^ Moves the branch tip back and resets the index and tracked working-tree files to match it. This can discard tracked changes.
Only particular files should return to their earlier contents git restore --source=HEAD^ path/to/file Restores the named path from the previous commit without moving the branch tip.

Undo a shared commit with revert

Find the commit ID you want to reverse, then run:

git revert <commit>

For example, replace <commit> with the actual commit hash. Git creates a new commit containing the reversal. The official git-revert manual requires a clean working tree for a revert. Commit or otherwise save current work first. If the inverse change conflicts with later edits, resolve the conflicts and continue the revert with:

git revert --continue

If the target is a merge commit, the revert requires a deliberate mainline choice: git revert -m <parent-number> <merge-commit>. The parent number determines which parent is treated as the mainline and therefore which changes are reversed. Do not choose it mechanically; identify the parent whose line of development should be retained.

Undo the latest local commit but keep the work

To remove the latest commit from the branch while keeping its changes available to edit and recommit, run:

git reset --soft HEAD^

The branch tip moves to the parent of the latest commit, but the changes remain in the index and working tree. Review them, make any corrections, then create a new commit. The Git reset manual documents this approach for redoing an incomplete commit or correcting a misspelled commit message.

Replace the latest local commit

If the commit’s content is right but its message needs correction, or you have made additional changes that belong in it, use git commit --amend to create a replacement for the latest commit. Amending changes the commit identity and local history; do not amend a commit that has already been shared.

Discard the latest local commit and tracked changes

git reset --hard HEAD^ moves the branch back one commit and makes the index and tracked files in the working tree match that target. Any tracked changes that are not present at the target can be lost. Before running it, check that important work is committed, backed up, or otherwise preserved. It is not a way to undo a public commit safely.

Restore only selected files

If the commit is otherwise fine and only certain paths need to be returned to their previous contents, restore those paths from the parent commit:

git restore --source=HEAD^ path/to/file

Replace path/to/file with each intended path. This changes file contents without moving the branch tip. Inspect the resulting diff before committing so that only the intended files and changes are included. To view an earlier version without changing the working tree, use git show HEAD^:path/to/file.

How to choose safely

  • Shared commit: use git revert to add a reversal rather than rewrite history.
  • Local commit, keep work: use git reset --soft HEAD^ when you want to edit or recommit the changes.
  • Local latest commit, replace it: use git commit --amend only if it has not been shared.
  • Local commit, discard tracked work: use git reset --hard HEAD^ only when that loss is intentional.
  • Only some files: use git restore for the selected paths, then review the diff.

The Git command reference distinguishes the core effects: reset moves the branch tip, restore updates files without moving the branch, and revert makes a new commit that reverses an earlier one.
