Visual-editor panels divide the job into three complementary areas: a layers or navigation panel for finding objects, a canvas for direct manipulation, and a context-sensitive properties or inspector panel for structured editing. A toolbar supplies frequent creation, selection, navigation, and mode controls. Select an object, tool, or set of objects and the inspector changes to show only controls that make sense for that context.
The four regions you work with
Although every application arranges its interface differently, most visual editors separate document navigation, visual work, and detailed settings. Figma describes a left navigation panel, a bottom toolbar, and a right properties panel detached from the canvas. Sketch uses a Layer List, Toolbar, and Inspector. The names and docking behavior vary, but the division of responsibilities is consistent.

Layers and navigation
The layers panel is a tree, not merely a list of names. Indentation shows parent-child relationships, so you can see which objects belong to a frame or group. Expanding and collapsing branches keeps a complex file manageable. Pages, artboards, frames, groups, text layers, shapes, and components can usually be selected from this tree.
This panel is often the fastest route to an object that cannot be clicked reliably on the canvas. Overlapping cards, transparent layers, tiny icons, and objects underneath a locked or larger layer may be difficult to target directly. Selecting the corresponding row in the hierarchy should synchronize the selection highlight with the canvas in editors that support this pattern. Renaming layers descriptively also improves hand-off and makes later searches faster.

Canvas or workspace
The canvas is the direct-manipulation surface. Dragging an object changes its position; handles change its size; rotation controls change its angle; and zoom or pan changes how much of the document is visible without changing the design itself. The canvas gives immediate visual feedback, while the inspector gives precise values.
A canvas selection and a hierarchy selection are two views of the same document state. If clicking on the artwork selects the wrong item, use the layers tree, then return to the canvas to judge spacing, alignment, and visual balance.
Properties panel or inspector
The inspector is context-sensitive. Sketch describes it as the place for settings for selected layers or controls for the tool being used. A selected frame can expose position, rotation, width, height, constraints, layout guides, auto layout, component properties, and export controls. A text layer can add font family, size, weight, line height, alignment, and text color. A shape can expose fills, strokes, corner radii, opacity, and effects. Prototyping-capable editors may also show interactions and navigation targets.
Responsive editors such as Wix commonly group related controls under responsive sizing, design, layout, position, transforms, and anchors. The exact labels differ, but the principle is the same: the panel presents settings that apply to the current context instead of displaying every possible command at once.

The toolbar contains high-frequency actions such as selecting, drawing a rectangle or text box, inserting a component, zooming, commenting, or switching between design and prototype modes. Figma documents its toolbar at the bottom; other applications place it at the top or beside the canvas. Location is a layout choice, not a difference in the underlying model.

Why the controls change after every selection
Dynamic controls prevent incompatible edits. When nothing is selected, the inspector may show document settings or tool options. Select a frame and layout controls appear. Select text and typography controls replace many shape controls. Activate a drawing tool and the same area may show the tool’s defaults rather than layer properties.
- Selection-dependent: controls describe the active layer or selection.
- Tool-dependent: controls can describe the instrument you are about to use.
- Mode-dependent: design, prototype, inspect, and export modes can expose different sections.
- Permission-dependent: edit access can allow property changes and prototype flows, while view-only access may be limited to inspection, comments, and export.
A missing control is therefore not necessarily a bug. Check whether the intended object is selected, whether a parent frame rather than a child is active, whether a section is collapsed, and whether your role permits editing.
Using the layers panel to select and organize objects
- Locate the relevant page or frame. Expand the document tree until the object name is visible.
- Select the row. Confirm that the canvas highlights the expected object.
- Inspect its parent. The indentation and expanded branches reveal whether the item is inside the correct group, frame, or component.
- Rename or reorder deliberately. Use names that describe purpose, such as Checkout header or Primary button, rather than leaving a sequence of generic rectangles.
- Return to the canvas for visual checks. Verify that a hierarchy change did not alter clipping, constraints, stacking order, or responsive behavior.
When an object appears visually but has no obvious row, look for a collapsed parent, a different page, a masked or clipped group, or a component instance. If it is locked, you may still be able to inspect it while being prevented from moving it.
What happens when you select multiple objects
Multi-selection changes the inspector from single-object editing to shared editing. Microsoft Visual Studio documents the rule that only properties common to every selected object appear. Balsamiq adds alignment and distribution controls and applies those operations to all selected elements.

Use multi-selection for batch alignment, equal spacing, grouping, hiding, moving, or applying a shared style. Before entering a numeric value, verify that it should replace the value on every selected item; a batch edit can intentionally overwrite differences.

How common editors differ
Compare an editor by behavior rather than by panel names:

| Are code inspection, prototyping, and export built into the panels? | These features determine whether the file can move directly into development or presentation workflows. |
Figma, Sketch, Wix, Visual Studio, and Balsamiq illustrate the same broad pattern while emphasizing different workflows. Figma and Sketch center on layer hierarchy and design properties; Wix adds responsive website controls; Visual Studio documents common-property filtering for multiple selected objects; and Balsamiq emphasizes alignment and distribution for a batch.

A practical workflow for any visual editor
- Start with the hierarchy. Identify the page, frame, artboard, or component that contains the work.
- Select the object from the tree or canvas. Use the tree when overlap, clipping, or small size makes direct selection unreliable.
- Read the inspector before editing. Note whether you are editing a child, its parent, an instance, or a tool default.
- Make precise changes in the inspector. Use the canvas for visual judgment and numeric fields for repeatable dimensions, spacing, and rotation.
- Use the toolbar for mode changes. Switch tools or prototype modes only after confirming that the intended layer remains selected.
- Batch-edit cautiously. Select several objects for alignment or distribution, then confirm which shared values will be overwritten.
- Check access rights. If a control is absent or disabled, determine whether the file is view-only, comment-only, or otherwise restricted.
Troubleshooting panel behavior
The wrong object is selected
Use the layers tree, expand the relevant parent, and select the exact row. Check for a transparent overlay, clipping group, or locked object intercepting canvas clicks.
The inspector is empty or shows tool settings
Click a layer rather than empty canvas space, exit the current drawing tool, and verify that the layer is not hidden. Some editors show document settings when there is no selection.
A property vanished after selecting several objects
That property may not apply to every selected type, or the selected values may differ. Reduce the selection to compatible objects or edit each type separately.

An edit control is visible but disabled
Check whether the layer, parent, component instance, or file is locked. Then confirm that your permission level includes editing; view-only roles commonly retain inspection, comments, and export but not property changes.

Collapse and reopen the parent branch, clear the selection, and select the row again. If the mismatch persists, check whether you are viewing another page, an instance rather than its main component, or a different editor mode.
