SQL is the language people use to define and work with data in relational database systems. It lets you create tables, retrieve and change rows, and combine information across tables. The core ideas are widely useful, but exact syntax, available data types, and edge-case behavior depend on the database engine—such as PostgreSQL or SQLite—so check the documentation for the product and version you use.
What is SQL?
SQL, commonly pronounced “sequel” or spelled out as “S-Q-L,” is a language for interacting with relational databases. A relational database organizes information into tables. Each table has columns, which describe kinds of information, and rows, which hold individual records.
For example, a customers table might have columns for a customer ID, name, and join date. SQL statements can define that table, add or retrieve its records, and relate them to records in another table. PostgreSQL’s PostgreSQL 17 tutorial introduces SQL alongside relational database concepts; its SQL language reference covers the language’s syntax and features.
What are the main categories of SQL commands?
A practical way to learn SQL is to group statements by the job they do. This is a teaching taxonomy, not a promise that every database supports identical commands or grammar.

- Define structures:
CREATE TABLEcreates a table and its columns.ALTER TABLEis commonly used to change an existing table’s structure. - Read data:
SELECTretrieves rows or calculated expressions from tables and other inputs. - Change data:
INSERTadds rows,UPDATEchanges values, andDELETEremoves rows. - Control work: Transactions group changes so they can be committed or rolled back as a unit. PostgreSQL’s tutorial introduces transactions alongside table creation, querying, and data changes.
These categories are useful for recognizing a statement’s purpose. They are not a substitute for the reference manual of your particular database.
What are SQL data types?
A column’s data type describes what kind of values it is intended to hold and how the database interprets them. Common conceptual families include numeric values for counts or measurements, text for names and descriptions, date/time values for temporal information, and boolean values for true-or-false states where supported.

For example, this illustrative table uses integer, text, and date types:
CREATE TABLE customers (
customer_id INTEGER,
name TEXT,
joined_on DATE
);Type names and behavior are not fully interchangeable between database products. Precision, storage, coercion, and date/time handling can differ, and an engine may use different type names or offer different alternatives. PostgreSQL lists its available types in its SQL language documentation; consult the current type reference for the engine you are actually using rather than assuming this example is portable unchanged.

How do you read a basic SELECT query?
Consider this illustrative query:
SELECT name, joined_on
FROM customers
WHERE joined_on >= DATE '2025-01-01'
ORDER BY joined_on;It requests the name and joined_on values for customer rows whose join date is on or after the stated date, then asks for the returned rows to be ordered by that date.
FROMidentifies the input table or tables.WHEREfilters individual rows.- The expressions after
SELECTdetermine which values or calculations appear in the result. ORDER BYspecifies a desired result order. Use it whenever a particular returned order matters.
SQL also supports grouping, duplicate removal, and aggregate calculations. GROUP BY forms groups for calculations such as COUNT or AVG; HAVING filters groups after aggregate calculations. DISTINCT removes duplicate result rows, but does not itself request a useful display order.

Do not confuse the way a query is explained logically with the database’s physical execution plan. SQLite’s SELECT documentation gives an illustrative processing sequence for a simple query, while explicitly noting that it does not require an engine to execute the steps physically in that order.
What does NULL mean?
NULL is used for a missing or unknown value in SQL contexts. It is not an ordinary value like zero or an empty string, so comparisons involving NULL do not behave like ordinary equality checks. Exact operators and edge-case details are engine-specific; SQLite describes its expression operators in its SQL language expressions reference.

What is the difference between INNER JOIN and LEFT JOIN?
A join combines rows from two table-like inputs by pairing them according to a condition. An INNER JOIN returns pairs that satisfy that condition. A LEFT JOIN returns those matches and also preserves each unmatched row from the left input; columns from the right input are NULL for those unmatched rows.
For example:
SELECT customers.name, orders.order_date
FROM customers
LEFT JOIN orders
ON customers.customer_id = orders.customer_id;This query keeps customers in the result even if they have no matching order. PostgreSQL’s tutorial explains joins as selecting row pairs from multiple tables or instances of a table, and its joins tutorial demonstrates the idea.

Why can a LEFT JOIN accidentally lose unmatched rows?
Be careful where you put a filter on the right-side table. A condition in the ON clause determines which right-side rows match. A condition on right-side columns in the WHERE clause filters the joined result afterward; it can reject the NULL-extended rows and remove customers without matches. That can make the result act like an inner join for that condition. SQLite’s SELECT reference explains the distinction between outer-join matching and later filtering.
Does SQL work the same way in every database?
No. Database engines provide SQL implementations with their own supported types, syntax forms, extensions, and behavior in edge cases. PostgreSQL’s SELECT reference documents its join forms and conditions. SQLite’s SELECT reference discusses permissive join syntax and differences such as join precedence and outer-join filtering.
