Microstepping is a way for a stepper-motor driver to command smaller changes in the motor’s magnetic field than a full step, producing smoother motion and often reducing vibration and noise. It increases the number of commanded positions, but it does not guarantee a matching increase in the motor’s actual positioning accuracy.

What microstepping changes inside a stepper motor

A stepper rotor moves to align with the magnetic field produced by energized stator coils. A common motor has 200 full steps per revolution, or 1.8 degrees per full step. In full-step operation, the driver switches the phase currents among relatively large states. Half stepping inserts intermediate states; microstepping divides each full step into still smaller commanded increments by controlling the currents in the motor’s phases.

For a typical two-phase motor, the driver varies the phase currents to approximate sine and cosine waveforms. Their combined magnetic field can then point between the orientations associated with full steps. Microstepping is therefore electrical current control, not a mechanical subdivision of a rotor tooth. The actual current waveform depends on the driver’s current regulation and conversion capabilities, as well as the motor itself.

Full steps, half steps, and microsteps compared

Mode Commanded increment Smoothness, resonance, and noise Holding and incremental torque Accuracy in use
Full step One full motor step per command; a typical 200-step motor moves 1.8 degrees per step. Larger changes in the magnetic field can produce more vibration or resonance, particularly at some speeds. Uses the motor’s full-step operating state; torque depends on the motor, driver, current, and load. Not determined by nominal step size alone; construction tolerance, load, and current delivery matter.
Half step Two commanded increments per full step. Intermediate states can make motion smoother than full stepping, though smoothness depends on how the driver implements them. Torque varies with the current state and operating conditions. More commanded positions do not by themselves establish greater actual accuracy.
Microstep Multiple smaller commanded increments per full step, set by the driver. Can reduce low-speed roughness, ringing, vibration, and audible noise. Incremental torque per microstep falls as the division increases; a small command may not overcome load, friction, and detent torque. Depends on the motor, load, and driver’s ability to deliver the intended phase currents—not just microstep count.

These are operating tendencies rather than guarantees for every motor and driver combination. A driver’s current regulation and decay behavior can materially affect the result.

Resolution is not the same as accuracy

Resolution describes the size of a commanded increment or the number of nominal positions available. Accuracy describes how closely the shaft reaches the intended physical position. As Analog Devices authors Cindy Chang and Tea Tran put it: “Although microstepping increases position resolution with more discrete positions, it does not improve position accuracy.” Their explanation identifies motor construction tolerance, load, and the driver’s ability to provide the desired coil current as factors affecting accuracy. Read the Analog Devices explanation of microstepping.

For a concrete illustration, Analog Devices describes a Trinamic capability of up to 256 microsteps per full step. On a 200-full-step motor, that is 51,200 nominal commanded positions per revolution, or 0.00703125 degrees per commanded increment. Those figures describe nominal resolution—not proof that the shaft can accurately or repeatably land at every such position.

Why finer microsteps can produce less movement

As the commanded increments get smaller, the incremental torque available to move the rotor between adjacent microstep positions also decreases. If that torque is not enough to overcome the combined effects of load, friction, and detent torque, the shaft may not move at every command even though the driver advances its electrical state.

Texas Instruments’ October 2021 report calculates incremental torque of approximately 9.8% of full-step holding torque at 16 microsteps per full step, 1.2% at 128, and 0.6% at 256. These are the report’s calculated values, not guaranteed figures for every motor-and-driver pairing. The same report says the DRV84xx and DRV88x9-Q1 families it covers support microstepping up to 1/256; that is a dated, family-specific statement, not a claim about every current TI driver. See the Texas Instruments report and its torque discussion.

Choose a driver for the motor and application, not the biggest number

Start with compatibility and operating requirements. A driver board should match the motor’s phase arrangement and documented current and wiring requirements. Phase labels are not universal across drivers, so verify the board documentation and datasheet rather than assuming that connector names or wire colors match another setup.

  • Motor compatibility: Confirm phase configuration, wiring, and rated current from the motor documentation.
  • Current regulation: Check how the driver controls coil current and whether its implementation suits the motor and desired motion.
  • Supply range and current rating: Verify them against the exact driver and motor documentation.
  • Decay and tuning behavior: Determine which settings or tuning features are available and whether they can produce an appropriate current waveform.
  • Control interface: Make sure the board can be commanded by your controller in the required way.
  • Thermal limits: Account for the motor, driver, board, cooling, and operating conditions; do not treat a current setting as safe without checking their documentation.

Manufacturer documents describe particular devices and families, not a universal ranking of drivers. Check the current datasheet for the specific product you plan to use.

Tune current and decay behavior for smoother motion

A microstepping driver needs to regulate current as the motor moves through its commanded states. If the current waveform departs substantially from the intended shape, the motor can vibrate, sound rough, or run hotter. Fast, slow, and mixed decay settings affect how current falls; the most suitable fixed decay choice can depend on supply voltage, back EMF, current, motor, and speed. Texas Instruments discusses current-decay tuning in its stepper-motor decay-mode technical article.

When possible, inspect the actual coil-current waveforms rather than assuming that a microstep setting guarantees a good waveform. The aim is to approximate the intended sinusoidal shape while staying within the motor and driver specifications.

Analog Devices’ AN-026 suggests, for the optimization context it describes, trying 50% to 100% of nominal motor current and tuning at the current where smoothness or precision matters most. That is a context-specific guideline, not universal wiring or thermal advice. Observe the exact motor and driver documentation, and do not raise current beyond their ratings as a shortcut: excess current can cause magnetic saturation, reduce microstepping accuracy, and overheat the motor. Read Analog Devices AN-026.

Diagnose uneven, noisy, or apparently missed microsteps

  • Rough motion or unexpected noise: Check motor-to-driver wiring and compatibility, current settings, and the current waveform. Review decay-mode behavior and tune for the supply, motor, and speed rather than assuming one setting suits every system.
  • The motor pumps or moves unevenly within a full step: Motor-specific waveform shape and friction or load effects may be involved. Analog Devices’ AN-026 discusses optimizing the waveform and current for smoothness at the operating point that matters.
  • The motor is quiet, but the shaft does not visibly move for every command: The incremental torque may be too small to overcome load and friction. More commanded subdivisions do not ensure a corresponding physical movement at each command.
  • Position appears worse at higher current: Check for magnetic saturation and excessive heating; more current is not automatically a route to better accuracy.

For a low-speed spacing assessment, AN-026 describes using a needle, a laser pointer aimed at a scale on a distant wall, or a high-resolution encoder. It also suggests tuning chopper settings and current first and beginning with a sine-wave table. These are engineering calibration techniques when fine motion needs to be evaluated, not mandatory setup steps for every project.

How to decide whether microstepping helps

  • Use microstepping when smoother low-speed motion, reduced vibration, or lower noise is the practical goal.
  • Do not infer absolute accuracy from the microstep division or nominal degrees per command.
  • Assess performance with the actual motor, driver, current waveform, load, friction, and speed.
  • Choose a microstep setting that improves the motion you need without assuming that every commanded increment will move the shaft.
