At the network edge, it may inspect SaaS traffic in real time through a proxy, connect to cloud services to scan data and activity through APIs, or combine both approaches. CASB does not always mean that every user session passes through a gateway.
What is a CASB?
A CASB is a security capability focused on cloud applications and cloud data. It can help identify use of both approved services and unsanctioned apps—often called shadow IT—and apply controls to cloud activity. Cisco describes CASBs as helping organizations “control and secure the use of SaaS applications” in its Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) and Security Service Edge (SSE) Architecture Guide, updated January 23, 2025.
The key architectural question is where inspection happens. An inline CASB handles traffic as it moves between a user and a cloud app. An API-based CASB connects to the app to inspect cloud-resident data and activity. A multimode service combines those scopes.
How does CASB work at the network edge?
In an edge-security design, internet- and SaaS-bound traffic may be routed through a cloud-delivered security service for inspection, while access to private applications follows a separate path. Cisco describes CASB in this context as supporting SaaS visibility, shadow IT discovery, and data-loss-prevention (DLP)-related detection in its SASE and SSE architecture guide.

Microsoft’s Global Secure Access documentation describes CASB, secure web gateway (SWG), and firewall as a service (FWaaS) within a unified framework. User traffic can be routed through Microsoft’s global edge for inspection and control, and Microsoft says Defender for Cloud Apps enables inline session control for SaaS applications. These are examples of particular vendor architectures, not requirements shared by every CASB.
What can each CASB mode see and control?

Check Point’s CASB architecture overview describes inline/proxy-based and API-based approaches, with multimode combining them. Inline enforcement depends on traffic actually passing through the proxy. API integrations can reach data and activity in services such as Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and Salesforce without redirecting each user session; Cloudflare gives those as examples in its SASE reference architecture.

Forward proxy: inspect outbound traffic
A forward proxy is positioned toward the user. Organizations steer outbound cloud requests through it using a supported method such as a PAC file, DNS-based redirection, or an endpoint agent. When the relevant traffic is covered, the proxy can apply session-time controls and help reveal unsanctioned SaaS use. Traffic that bypasses the proxy is outside those inline controls.
Reverse proxy: control selected app access
A reverse proxy is positioned toward the cloud service and is generally configured for particular approved applications. It can be useful when people need to access those services from unmanaged devices where an endpoint agent cannot be installed. It is not a general view of every cloud destination a user contacts.

API integration: inspect cloud-resident data
An API-based CASB connects to supported SaaS services rather than sitting in the user’s traffic path. Depending on the integration, it can scan stored files and review application activity, including historical data as described by Check Point. Because sessions do not need to be rerouted, this mode addresses a different problem from inline inspection: finding or managing risks in cloud data and activity beyond the moment a user uploads or downloads something.
Multimode: cover distinct points in the lifecycle
Combining API and inline controls can address both data at rest and activity in transit. The result still depends on which apps are integrated, which traffic routes through inspection, and what policies are enabled; the label “multimode” alone does not establish complete protection.

How CASB differs from SWG, DLP, ZTNA, SSE, and SASE

The terms describe related but distinct scopes. A single vendor service may combine several capabilities, but that packaging does not make them synonymous.

What to check when evaluating a CASB deployment
- Application coverage: Which SaaS apps have API integrations? Which apps and traffic paths can inline inspection cover? Ask whether the goal is broad outbound visibility or control over a defined set of approved services.
- Data in motion versus data at rest: Decide whether the priority is session-time enforcement, scanning cloud-stored data, or both. Inline and API modes address different points in the data lifecycle.
- Traffic steering and device management: Confirm whether the design uses endpoint agents, PAC files, browser or operating-system proxy settings, or another supported method. Cloudflare documents agent and browser-proxy approaches as well as split-tunnel routing controls in its SASE reference architecture.
- Unmanaged-device access: If users need access from devices without agents, ask whether reverse-proxy control for the required approved apps is available and sufficient.
- Operational impact: Evaluate the effects of proxying, traffic redirection, and TLS inspection on latency, support, and certificate management. Cloudflare notes that HTTPS filtering through its browser-proxy approach requires managed devices to trust a root certificate; requirements differ by product and configuration.
- Ownership of adjacent controls: Clarify which service handles web filtering, private-app access, DLP policy, and firewalling so capabilities and responsibilities are not assumed to be interchangeable.
- Evidence behind product claims: Compare documented app coverage, integration behavior, enforcement points, and operational requirements. Vendor architecture pages explain their own designs; they are not independent comparative effectiveness tests.
