GNU Screen is a good fit when its virtual-terminal workflow, scrollback, and copy-and-paste features suit your environment. “umux” is ambiguous: Crystal Studio’s umux is a developer-described graphical workspace app, while combinatrix-ai/umux is an archived, API-oriented shell tool for agents. They are different products, and neither should be treated as a direct substitute for the other.
First, which umux do you mean?
There are two distinct tools with this name. The comparison to tmux and GNU Screen may refer to Crystal Studio’s desktop app, but that is an inference from the title, not a confirmed identification.
- Crystal Studio umux: The developer describes a graphical terminal workspace manager with project workspaces, tabs, split panels, SSH, and agent-completion notifications, with support for Linux, Windows, and macOS. These are developer-reported features, not independently verified findings. Its developer article describes the product.
- combinatrix-ai/umux: This is an API-based stateful shell-session tool for agents, with CLI/API operations, bounded output, and declarative waiting—not a general-purpose human terminal multiplexer. GitHub marks its repository archived on July 6, 2026; current availability and any successor are uncertain. See the archived repository.
The rest of the comparison treats “umux” as Crystal Studio’s GUI app. The agent-oriented project is addressed separately below.
How the session managers organize your work

tmux’s official getting-started guide describes its hierarchy and scripting interface. The GNU Screen manual documents Screen’s virtual terminals and their features. For Crystal Studio umux, the organization model and feature descriptions come from the developer, rather than independent testing.

What happens when you disconnect or close a terminal?
tmux and GNU Screen
Both tools document detached sessions that continue running after you leave the session, and allow you to reattach later. tmux describes protection from remote connection drops, access from multiple local computers, and organizing several programs inside one terminal as common uses. GNU Screen’s manual likewise describes programs continuing to run when a virtual terminal is hidden or a session is detached. It highlights reattaching—including moving a detached session between terminals—as a central use. Consult the tmux guide and the Screen manual for their documented behavior.
Crystal Studio umux
A Crystal Studio release post dated October 2, 2026 describes version 1.7.0 and a daemon intended to keep sessions alive after the application window closes. That describes the developer’s stated intent; verify the behavior in the current release before relying on it. See the release post.

Which one should you choose?
Choose tmux for a keyboard-first terminal workflow
Choose tmux if you want sessions, windows, and panes managed from the terminal, with documented detaching and reattaching plus a command and scripting interface. The official homepage lists tmux 3.7c and links to installation and documentation; release information can change, so check the official tmux homepage for the current version and guidance.
Choose GNU Screen when its virtual-terminal workflow fits
Screen may suit you if you want virtual terminals with scrollback and copy-and-paste, and a familiar detach-and-reattach workflow—including moving a session between terminals. The reviewed official documentation establishes those functions, but does not establish a broad performance or maintenance ranking against tmux.

Consider Crystal Studio umux for a GUI workspace
Consider this umux if you want the project-workspace, tabs, and split-panel approach the developer describes, and a graphical app is permitted in your environment. Check the current release and platform support before depending on those product claims; the available descriptions are not independent compatibility tests.
Treat the archived umux as a separate agent tool
If your need is agent-controlled shell sessions through an API, combinatrix-ai/umux was built around that model. Its repository is archived, so the page does not establish that it is currently maintained or what a successor might be.

Check your environment before committing
The right choice depends partly on where the session must run, not just on preferred features. Before settling on a workflow, check:
- Which tool is already installed on the remote host or system where the processes must keep running.
- Which terminal is available and whether you can install or configure a terminal multiplexer there.
- Whether a graphical application is allowed, if you are considering Crystal Studio umux.
- Whether you need terminal-based scripting, a GUI workspace, or an agent-facing API; these are different interaction models.
The reviewed sources do not establish universal availability across operating systems or remote environments. Confirm support for your specific host and setup rather than assuming that a tool available on your computer is also available on a remote machine.
