A UK homeowner says most indoor taps lost usable flow immediately after a new hot-water cylinder was installed, with hot and cold affected about equally. That timing makes the recent plumbing work worth checking, but the account alone does not show that the cylinder—or any particular part—caused the change. Before paying for a booster, ask the installer to measure the flow and pressure and inspect the affected supply paths.
What the homeowner reported
In a post on r/ukplumbing, a homeowner described removing a boiler and radiators, moving space heating and cooling to air conditioning, and installing a 180-litre hot-water cylinder in the loft. They said water flow had been usable before the work but fell noticeably at most indoor taps immediately afterward, including the kitchen and an upstairs bathroom basin. They reported that hot and cold were affected about equally, while two outdoor taps seemed unchanged. The hot water continued to heat normally. These are the homeowner’s observations, not measurements from an independent inspection. The Cool Down’s October 3, 2026 report also summarizes the account and comments on the post.
The homeowner asked: “Could something in the new pipework or valve arrangement explain the drop on both hot and cold?” They also wrote: “Before spending money on that, I’d like to understand why things became noticeably worse straight after the installation.” The reported cylinder capacity is a detail about this one installation, not evidence about how common this problem is.
What the pattern does—and does not—tell you
A change that starts immediately after plumbing work gives a practical reason to review that work. Several affected indoor outlets also make it useful to map the pattern before assuming a single tap is at fault. But similar reports of reduced hot and cold flow do not, by themselves, identify the cause or prove that the cylinder is defective.

Restrictions involving valves, filters, or changed pipework are possibilities mentioned in coverage of the account, not confirmed findings. A useful comparison is the number and location of affected outlets, whether the problem is on hot, cold, or both, and whether it began before or after the installation. No cause should be ranked without inspection evidence.
What to ask the installer to check
Ask for a diagnosis based on comparable measurements and an inspection of the work, rather than an equipment recommendation alone. Useful questions include:

- Package Contents: This package comes with 12 male faucet aerators in four sizes—16.5 mm, 18.5 mm, 21.5 mm, and 24 mm—to fit a variety of faucet diameters. Additionally, it includes 6 aerator keys in different sizes for easy installation and removal. Please note: To ensure a proper fit, kindly confirm your faucet's size before purchasing
- Easy to Install: Equipped with the included wrench tools, replacing and installing the faucet filter is quick and hassle-free—no plumber needed, and the entire process can be completed in just 1 minute. Please note that this product is only compatible with faucets featuring detachable aerators, so be sure to confirm your faucet type before purchasing to ensure a proper fit
- High Quality ABS Material: Crafted from premium ABS, our faucet aerator keys boast exceptional sturdiness and durability. Note: While the material is robust, please handle with moderate force during use to avoid accidental damage
- Wide Application: These flow restrictor insert faucet aerators are suitable for kitchen sink faucets and bathroom faucets alike, compatible with aerators from brands such as Moen, Kohler, American Standard, Danze, and Grohe. It's important to note that compatibility primarily depends on product size—even for the aforementioned brands, a mismatch in size will result in incompatibility
- Prevents Splashing: These mixer faucet aerators effectively combine water and air to produce lots of bubbles, which in turn reduces water flow from taps without lowering water pressure. It helps prevent water splashing by saving water. An excellent faucet aerator tool set can be used to repair or clean blocked aerators, fix low flow faucets, and restore smooth flow
- Which outlets are affected, and what is the measured flow at each one under comparable conditions?
- Were static and dynamic pressure checked, and what do those readings indicate?
- Were the stopcocks, valves, filters, and any shared supply path altered during the work inspected?
- Does the proposed fix address a measured condition? Ask the installer to explain the readings and the reasoning behind any booster recommendation.
Keep a simple record of which taps changed, whether the hot or cold side is affected, and what the installer measured. That makes it easier to distinguish a local outlet issue from a pattern across multiple outlets. The account in the original post does not establish that a booster, replacement valve, or aerator is the right remedy.

Check the compliance details if the system is unvented
The homeowner’s post does not establish whether the new cylinder is an unvented hot-water system or whether the installer was registered with a competent-person scheme. Those details matter. England’s Approved Document G, 2024 amended edition, treats installation of an unvented hot-water system as notifiable building work. Prior notification is not necessary when the installer is registered with a competent-person scheme for unvented systems; the installer self-certifies, and the owner or occupier is to receive a building-regulations certificate of compliance. Ask the installer which route applied and request the certificate if relevant.

If it is unclear whether work needed approval, government guidance advises contacting the appropriate building-control body. The government’s building-regulations approval guidance also notes that registered competent-person-scheme work may not require a separate application. Document G is England guidance, with the scope for excepted energy buildings in Wales specified on its page; do not assume its rules apply throughout the UK. Check the relevant rules for the installation’s jurisdiction.

A booster recommendation is not proof that a booster is appropriate. Ask what supply condition the measurements show, whether the system is suitable for the proposed equipment, and what flow rate the pump is rated to deliver. The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 require fittings to be suitable for their circumstances, appropriate in quality and standard, and installed in a workmanlike manner. Their notification provisions list certain pumps or boosters drawing more than 12 litres per minute. That threshold alone does not determine whether a proposed pump in this case would require notification: the proposed equipment and flow rate have not been identified.
