Ubuntu Unity 20.10 offered a familiar, customizable Unity 7 desktop, and reviewer Adam Hunt reported good performance in his live USB sessions. That is a positive personal impression—not evidence of measured or long-term stability. More importantly, Ubuntu 20.10 reached end of life on July 22, 2021, and no longer receives package or security updates. Treat this as a historical review, not an installation recommendation.

What was Ubuntu Unity 20.10?

Released on October 22, 2020, Ubuntu 20.10—codenamed Groovy Gorilla—was a short-term Ubuntu release. Ubuntu Unity was a community flavor built around Unity 7, distinct from the main Ubuntu desktop, which used GNOME. The Ubuntu Release Team said flavors releasing with 20.10 would receive nine months of maintenance updates; that support period has long since ended. Ubuntu’s 20.10 release announcement gives the release context.

What was Unity 20.10 like to use?

The release shipped with Unity 7.5.0. In Full Circle Magazine issue 165, reviewer Adam Hunt—who had used earlier Unity releases—described the interface as familiar, easy to use, efficient, and visually appealing. His review said, “Unity 7 remains a great interface, easy to use and efficient, and with appealing aesthetics.” That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a universal usability test.

Customization and appearance

Ubuntu Unity 20.10 added an Arc-darker window theme as its default, included Unity Tweak Tool and CompizConfig Settings Manager, and introduced a Groovy Gorilla wallpaper designed for the release by Allan Carvalho. Hunt reported that the wallpaper collection offered 54 choices. CompizConfig Settings Manager let users select Compiz plugins and desktop effects, while Unity Tweak Tool provided additional desktop configuration options.

Included software and system components

Hunt’s review listed Linux kernel 5.8, GRUB boot support for BIOS and UEFI, Firefox 82.0, LibreOffice 7.0.2, Nemo 4.6.5, and Thunderbird 78.3.2. These are release-era versions, not current software recommendations. The review also noted that Geary and Nautilus were dropped from the previous release’s included applications; Thunderbird remained, and Nemo served as the file manager. Ubuntu’s release announcement likewise noted the Linux 5.8-based kernel.

Was Ubuntu Unity 20.10 stable?

Hunt said he found good performance during live USB sessions, including on his minimum-spec hardware. The review does not provide benchmark measurements, a defined hardware specification, crash-rate data, or evidence from long-term use. It therefore supports a favorable account of one person’s experience, but cannot establish objective stability, security, or comparative performance.

Can you use Ubuntu Unity 20.10 today?

It is not a supported choice for normal internet-connected use. The Ubuntu Release Team confirmed that support ended on July 22, 2021: no further package updates would be accepted, and Ubuntu Security Notices would no longer include information or updated packages for the release. The announcement’s stated upgrade route was through Ubuntu 21.04, which is also end of life. See the Ubuntu 20.10 end-of-life notice.

If you want to explore Unity 20.10 for historical or offline purposes, understand that its software is frozen at the end of its support life and lacks ongoing security maintenance. For a maintained Unity desktop, the Ubuntu Unity project identifies itself as a community flavor featuring Unity 7. Its support page recommends Ubuntu Unity 24.04.4 LTS for long-term stability and says it is supported until 2027. Project recommendations can change, so check the support page before choosing a release.

How does it compare with a current Unity release?

The meaningful difference for most readers is support, not a contest between desktop impressions. Ubuntu Unity 20.10 is unsupported; the project’s current guidance favors 24.04.4 LTS for long-term stability. A present-day comparison should also account for newer hardware support and software, but the cited review and project guidance do not provide a controlled feature or performance comparison between those releases.
