Ubuntu changed the implementation behind the sudo command in Ubuntu 25.10: sudo-rs became the default provider, and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS keeps that arrangement. Most ordinary interactive commands should continue to work, but sudo-rs is not fully compatible with classic sudo. The original implementation remains available as sudo.ws, and Ubuntu documents how to switch providers with update-alternatives.
What changed in Ubuntu 25.10 and 26.04
Ubuntu 25.10 (Questing Quokka) made the Rust-based sudo-rs the provider selected for the sudo command. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS retains it as the default. This is a provider change rather than a change to the command name most users type.
Ubuntu’s documentation says the majority of common use cases are supported and that the change should be invisible to most users. That statement does not promise complete command-line, policy, authentication, or logging parity with classic sudo.

Why the binaries have different names
Ubuntu keeps the original sudo implementation alongside sudo-rs and renames the classic binaries with a .ws suffix. The directly callable classic command on the covered releases is therefore sudo.ws, while the alternatives system selects which implementation answers to the unqualified sudo name.

What should continue to work
Normal interactive administration—running a package command, editing a protected file through a supported invocation, or starting a root shell using ordinary options—is the compatibility target Ubuntu describes. Existing users should not need to change every command simply because the implementation is now written in Rust.
Compatibility is not universal. Treat shell automation, unusual flags, complex policy files, central logging, replay, LDAP deployments, and narrowly scoped sudoedit rules as items to verify rather than assume.

Authentication prompts can break Expect-style automation
Classic sudo.ws commonly displays a prompt such as [sudo] password for <USERNAME>. sudo-rs uses the authentication text supplied by PAM, which may be Password:, PIN:, or another method-specific string.

An Expect script that waits for the old literal prompt can therefore time out even though authentication itself works. Ubuntu documents --prompt "" as a way to avoid matching the prompt in Expect-based automation. Test the exact installed version and PAM stack before deploying that change.
I/O logging and replay are not supported in this setup
Ubuntu’s documented differences state that I/O logging and sudoreplay are not supported. The associated sudo_logsrvd and sudo_sendlog components are also discontinued in this setup.
If your compliance process depends on recorded terminal sessions, replay, or a remote sudo log server, switching providers is not a cosmetic change. Review the audit design and confirm an alternative before changing a production host.

LDAP integration uses PAM instead of sudo-ldap
Ubuntu removed the sudo-ldap package. Administrators who need LDAP-backed authentication should configure LDAP authentication through PAM, following the authentication design for their Ubuntu release. Do not plan a migration around installing the removed package.
sudoers compatibility is a subset
The Ubuntu sudoers-rs manual describes its policy format as a syntax-compatible subset of the sudo-project format. Straightforward rules are the expected path, but complex files and less-common directives are migration items.

Choose interactively
sudo update-alternatives --config sudoThe alternatives menu shows the available providers and lets you select the implementation that should answer to sudo.
Select classic sudo non-interactively
sudo update-alternatives --set sudo /usr/bin/sudo.wsThis makes classic sudo the selected provider while leaving sudo-rs installed.
Select sudo-rs again
sudo update-alternatives --set sudo /usr/lib/cargo/bin/sudoUbuntu does not recommend switching back to sudo.ws as a general policy, but documents it for cases where a required feature has not yet been migrated or validated.

Safer production procedure
- Identify automation that matches authentication prompts, invokes
sudoedit, or depends on session recording and replay. - Review policy files with
man sudoers-rsand test the options supported by the installedsudo-rs --help. - Test PAM authentication, command authorization, logging expectations, and recovery access on a non-production host.
- Keep an existing administrative session available while changing the provider on a server.
- After validation, select the provider with
update-alternativesand repeat the checks from a fresh login.
Security update relevant to Ubuntu 26.04
Ubuntu Security Notice USN-8708-1, published September 1, 2026, describes a time-of-check/time-of-use issue in sudo-rs‘s sudoedit handling. The described attack required a local user who already had permission to use sudoedit on specific files; under the affected fine-grained configuration, that user could potentially place files in arbitrary directories and escalate privileges. Ubuntu says the default configuration was not affected.
For Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, the notice lists sudo-rs 0.2.13-0ubuntu1.2 as the fixed package version and says a standard system update applies the necessary changes. The notice is release- and configuration-specific; it is not evidence that every sudo-rs installation is vulnerable. Check the current notice and the installed package state for your own release.

What to verify before a fleet migration
- Release scope: Confirm whether the host is Ubuntu 25.10 or 26.04 LTS; the default change is not established here for every earlier or future release.
- Installed documentation: Read
sudo-rs --helpandman sudoers-rs. Ubuntu warns that its differences list can lag active development or omit changes. - Authentication: Test the real PAM modules, including any PIN, smart-card, or multi-factor prompt text.
- Automation: Search for literal prompt matching and assumptions about command output or option support.
- Authorization: Exercise representative allow and deny rules, especially complex or narrowly scoped
sudoeditpermissions. - Audit: Determine whether the loss of I/O logging and replay changes your compliance controls.
- Recovery: Preserve console or out-of-band access while changing the alternatives selection.
- Updates: Apply the current Ubuntu security updates and verify package versions after patching.
Bottom line for Ubuntu administrators
On Ubuntu 25.10 and 26.04 LTS, sudo-rs is the normal sudo provider, and most everyday users can continue working without changes. The migration matters when you depend on exact authentication prompts, I/O recording and replay, LDAP-specific packaging, advanced sudoers behavior, or finely scoped sudoedit rules. Validate those dependencies against the installed help and manpages, patch Ubuntu 26.04 systems to at least the fixed package version named in USN-8708-1, and use sudo.ws only when a tested compatibility requirement justifies selecting the classic provider.
