In December 2021, Ubisoft said a misconfiguration in infrastructure supporting Just Dance let a third party access player data and potentially copy it. The data described in the company’s statement consisted of technical identifiers and user-uploaded dance videos—not confirmed Ubisoft passwords or payment details. Ubisoft said it corrected the configuration and notified affected players by email; it did not disclose how many users were affected or how long the data was exposed.
What Just Dance data was exposed?
Ubisoft described the exposed information as “technical identifiers” and videos recorded and uploaded by players for sharing. The reported identifier types were:
- GamerTags
- Profile IDs
- Device IDs
The videos were ones users had uploaded to share with the in-game community or on their social media profiles. SecurityWeek and The Record reproduced Ubisoft’s description.
Were Ubisoft passwords or payment details leaked?
Ubisoft said its investigation had found no compromise of Ubisoft account information, and the cited reports did not describe passwords, payment details or other sensitive user details as exposed. That is the company’s reported finding, not an independent forensic inventory of every record that may have been accessed. The available reporting supports saying data was accessed and potentially copied; it does not establish that every exposed record was copied or prove that no other individual record was involved.

How many users were affected, and how long was the data exposed?
Ubisoft did not publish an affected-user count, an exposure-duration figure or the quantity of data that may have been copied in the cited disclosure reports. Those unknowns prevent a precise assessment of the incident’s scale. Ubisoft did report that it began emailing impacted users, as The Record reported on December 20, 2021.
Was the incident a hack or a misconfiguration?
The reported cause was a misconfiguration in infrastructure supporting Just Dance. A third party used that exposure to access data; the public description does not characterize the event as a theft of Ubisoft passwords or as a compromise of Ubisoft accounts. SecurityWeek reported on December 22, 2021, that Ubisoft had corrected the configuration and strengthened its infrastructure: SecurityWeek’s account of the disclosure.

What did Ubisoft do, and what remains unknown?
The reported response included correcting the configuration, strengthening infrastructure and emailing affected players. The available disclosure does not give a user count, exposure duration or amount of copied data, and the cited reports identify no compensation or credit-monitoring offer.
Ubisoft also published a separate cyber-security update on March 10, 2022, describing temporary disruption to some games, systems and services, a company-wide password reset and no evidence at that time that player personal information had been accessed or exposed. That later update has a different description; the cited sources do not establish that it was the same incident as the 2021 Just Dance exposure. See Ubisoft’s March 2022 security update.

What should Just Dance players do?
The reported incident did not establish that Ubisoft passwords were compromised, so it does not support claiming that players must change a password because of this exposure. Still, Ubisoft’s privacy policy recommends using strong, unique passwords, enabling two-factor authentication and keeping devices up to date. Those are general account-protection steps, not evidence of a specific account takeover: Ubisoft privacy policy.
For Just Dance Now, Ubisoft’s help page lists phone ID, IP address and game events among data collected to provide gameplay, and provides a route to request access to personal data. This describes that service’s data practices; it does not expand the list of data reported in the 2021 exposure. Details are available on the Just Dance Now personal-data help page.
