The enzyme is UBE2N. A study reported in October 2026 found that restoring UBE2N in mice reduced liver fat accumulation, inflammation, and scarring. That makes UBE2N a possible target for future research—not a proven treatment or preventive measure for people with fatty liver disease.

What UBE2N does in the reported study

UBE2N is part of the cellular machinery that attaches ubiquitin to proteins. The Cedars-Sinai report says the enzyme helps clear damaged mitochondria—the structures that produce energy inside cells—and supports the breakdown of fat. Researchers reported that UBE2N levels declined in liver cells as disease became more advanced.

The study’s authors interpret this decline as relevant to MASH development. MASH, formerly often called NASH, is a more severe form of fatty liver disease involving fat in the liver along with inflammation, cell injury, and scarring. The report describes the proposed role of UBE2N in that disease process; it does not establish that low UBE2N is the sole cause of MASH.

What happened when researchers restored UBE2N

In laboratory mice, restoring UBE2N to normal levels was associated with less liver fat accumulation, inflammation, and scarring. Those are the reported animal findings, not demonstrated benefits in people. The study is identified as Feng Wang et al., “UBE2N deficiency contributes to MASH development via p62-regulated mitophagy and PANoptosis,” published in Nature Metabolism in 2026, volume 8, issue 9, page 1926, DOI 10.1038/s42255-026-01590-0. ScienceDaily’s report, based on material from Cedars-Sinai, summarizes the findings.

The report does not provide the study’s methods, sample sizes, or effect sizes in the material available here, and it does not establish clinical benefit in humans. The results should therefore be read as an early biological finding that needs further investigation.

What the finding means for people with MASLD or MASH

MASLD is the current term for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease; MASH refers to its inflammatory, injury-associated form. The Cedars-Sinai report attributes two prevalence estimates to the American Liver Foundation: 100 million people in the United States have MASLD, and roughly 20% to 25% of people affected by MASLD develop MASH. The report does not state the year for those estimates.

For patients, the practical point is limited: UBE2N is a research lead, not a treatment option. The reported work does not show that taking a supplement can increase UBE2N, improve liver health, or prevent progression. It also does not provide a reason to change prescribed care. Anyone managing MASLD or MASH should discuss treatment and monitoring with a qualified healthcare professional.

What researchers need to establish next

The researchers describe future work as necessary to test whether enhancing this pathway could complement existing treatments, identify patients most likely to benefit, or help prevent advanced disease. The key distinction for any next study will be whether it observes UBE2N levels or actively changes them, what outcomes it measures, and whether the evidence comes from animals or people.

Until human studies show that manipulating UBE2N is safe and beneficial, the mouse results cannot be used to predict an individual patient’s outcome. The report presents a possible route for further study, not an available UBE2N-based therapy.
