The U.S. Justice Department closed its investigation of Future Electronics in 2002, according to an April 4 report by EDN. The report said the investigation concerned allegations about accounting and supplier rebates, which the Montreal-based distributor denied. EDN also said the FBI had not filed charges against the company; the reported closure was not a court ruling.
What happened
On April 4, 2002, EDN reported that the Justice Department had ended its investigation of Future Electronics. The outlet said a company statement issued that day reported that officials had “determined that there are no grounds for further investigation of Future Electronics, and the matter is now officially closed.” That is the company’s reported wording, not a quotation independently checked against the original statement or a Justice Department record. EDN’s April 4, 2002 report
EDN further reported that Justice officials told Canadian police they were revoking a request for assistance, and that a letter titled “Declination of Prosecution” had been sent to Future earlier that week. The letter itself was not available in the reporting reviewed here, and no Justice Department official quotation about the decision was reported.

According to EDN’s 2002 account, unidentified sources had accused Future in 1997 of keeping two sets of books to mislead suppliers. A 1999 EDN report described allegations involving supplier rebates, sales records, and inventory reports. These were allegations, not findings established in the cited accounts.

Future denied wrongdoing. In the 1999 report, the company argued that investigators misunderstood industry practices involving rebates and “ship from stock and debit,” a method connected to how distributors and suppliers account for shipped products. EDN’s November 15, 1999 report
Why Canadian authorities and seized documents were involved
The investigation crossed the Canada–United States border. EDN reported that the FBI asked Canadian police for help in 1999 and that court actions concerned documents seized during a May 1999 raid at Future’s headquarters. In 2000, EE Times covered a dispute over sharing seized files with U.S. investigators. EE Times’ July 4, 2000 report

What the closure did—and did not—establish
EDN said the FBI had never filed charges against Future. The 2002 report describes the end of an investigation and a reported decision not to pursue prosecution; it does not describe a trial or a judicial decision resolving the underlying allegations. The closure should therefore not be characterized as a court exoneration.
The company welcomed the outcome. EDN quoted a spokesperson calling it “truly a celebratory moment for the company” and reported the company’s view that the allegations were “trumped up.” Those remarks express Future’s position, not a finding by Justice Department officials.

Sources and limits of the record
The contemporaneous accounts establish what EDN and EE Times reported at the time. The original Future statement and the reported Justice Department letter were not available in those accounts, so the exact basis for the government’s decision cannot be independently confirmed from them. No DOJ official quotation explaining the closure was reported.
