interface and type can both describe an object shape. The key difference is that an interface declares an object contract that can be extended and merged with compatible declarations, while a type alias can name a wider range of type expressions, including unions and tuples. In an interview, explain the distinction in terms of capabilities and intent—not as a rule that one is always better.

What is the short interview answer?

For an ordinary object shape, either form can work. I would usually choose an interface when I am defining an extensible object contract, especially if declaration merging is intentional. I would choose a type alias when I need a union, tuple, or another type expression that an interface declaration cannot represent. For object shapes without a specific feature requirement, a team convention is a reasonable deciding factor.

The TypeScript Handbook describes both forms and their capabilities in its interface and type alias guidance.

How do they compare?

Question interface type alias
Can it describe an object shape? Yes. Yes.
Can it name a union or tuple? Not directly as an interface declaration. Yes; aliases can name unions, tuples, and other type expressions.
How can it combine object requirements? Use extends; inherited members are checked for compatibility. Use an intersection (&); the resulting type must satisfy both sets of requirements.
Can another declaration add members under the same name? Compatible interface declarations can merge. No. A type alias cannot be reopened with a second declaration of the same name.

The Handbook covers object types, extension, and intersections, as well as declaration merging.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What can a type alias represent that an interface cannot?

A type alias can give a name to a type expression, not just an object shape. For example, a result that is either a success or a failure is naturally expressed as a union:

type Result = Success | Failure;

Aliases can also name tuples and primitive types. An interface declaration, by contrast, is used to declare an object type. See the TypeScript Handbook’s explanations of type aliases and unions and intersections.

How do declaration merging and extension differ?

Declaration merging happens when separate compatible interface declarations use the same name; TypeScript combines their members. Extension instead declares a new interface in relation to an existing type. They are separate mechanisms, and merging is not something a type alias supports.

interface Account {
  id: string;
}

interface Account {
  displayName: string;
}

// The Account interface includes both id and displayName.

This behavior can be useful when an API or library is designed to allow augmentation. It also means that adding another declaration with the same interface name can change the resulting contract, so use it deliberately. The Declaration Merging Handbook explains the rules.

Why are extends and & not interchangeable?

Both mechanisms combine requirements, but they handle conflicting properties differently. Interface extension checks whether inherited members are compatible and rejects incompatible declarations. An intersection combines both requirements; if the same property is required to be both a string and a number, that property has an impossible type for ordinary values.

interface HasName {
  value: string;
}

interface HasNumber {
  value: number;
}

// Rejected: the inherited value declarations conflict.
interface Combined extends HasName, HasNumber {}

// The intersection combines both requirements for value.
type CombinedAlias = HasName & HasNumber;

In this example, a value of type CombinedAlias would need its value property to satisfy both string and number. The difference is more than syntax: extension reports the incompatible inherited members, while the intersection preserves both requirements. The Handbook’s object-type discussion describes this distinction.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose an interface for a plain object contract that is intended to be extended, or when same-name declaration merging is a deliberate part of the design.
  • Choose a type alias when the definition needs to be a union, tuple, primitive alias, or another type expression rather than just an object declaration.
  • For a regular object shape, either is valid; follow the project’s established style unless a particular capability points to one form.

How to phrase it in an interview

“Both interfaces and type aliases can describe object shapes. Interfaces support extension and declaration merging, while type aliases can name more than objects, including unions and tuples. I use an interface for an extensible object contract and a type alias when I need a union or another type expression; for a simple object shape, I follow the codebase convention. Also, extends checks inherited members for compatibility, whereas an intersection combines requirements.”

A surfaced interview page uses the wording “Differences between type alias and interface” for a TypeScript interview question: ITLead’s TypeScript interview question. That is a useful way to recognize the topic, not evidence of how often employers ask it.
