Computer hardware is the tangible equipment and physical components that make up or connect to a computer system. Common types include input, processing, memory and storage, output, and communications hardware; parts can also be grouped as internal components or external peripherals. These categories describe different aspects of a device, so they can overlap.

What are the types of computer hardware?

Hardware is the physical part of a computer system: components you can touch, whether they are installed inside a computer or connected to it. The Section508.gov glossary defines hardware as a tangible device, piece of equipment, or physical component of information and communications technology.

A common way to classify computer hardware is by its function:

  • Input: supplies data or commands to the computer.
  • Processing: executes instructions or performs calculations.
  • Memory and storage: holds information temporarily for active work or retains it for later use.
  • Output: presents results to a person or another system.
  • Communications and networking: enables devices to exchange data.

These are useful categories, not a single rigid standard. For example, a touchscreen both displays information and accepts touch input. A network adapter is communications hardware, and it may be installed internally or attached externally.

What are examples of hardware by function?

Input devices

Input hardware lets a person or another system provide data or commands. Examples include keyboards, mice, touchscreens, scanners, cameras, and microphones. A laptop’s built-in keyboard and camera are hardware just as an external keyboard or webcam is.

For choosing an input device, consider the task, how it connects, whether it works with the computer, and any accessibility needs. A touchscreen, for instance, can serve as both an input device and an output display.

Processing components

The central processing unit (CPU) executes instructions and coordinates much of a computer’s work. A graphics processing unit (GPU) specializes in graphics and other visual computation; it may be integrated into a system or installed as a separate card. Modern computers use multiple components and specialized processors, so it is not accurate to say the CPU performs every task by itself.

CPU and GPU choices depend on the intended workload, platform compatibility, and performance requirements. The category name alone does not establish whether a particular component will work with a specific computer.

Memory and storage devices

RAM is working memory: it temporarily holds data and instructions the CPU is actively using. Drives provide longer-term storage for files and applications. RAM and storage are related, but they are not interchangeable; a drive retains stored information for later use, while RAM serves active work.

Hard disk drives (HDDs) store data on spinning magnetic disks. Solid-state drives (SSDs) use nonvolatile flash memory. In its general comparison, IBM describes SSDs as faster, more durable, and more energy-efficient than HDDs; those are broad tendencies, not guarantees for every drive or workload.

When comparing storage, consider capacity, interface and form factor, performance for the intended use, and cost. A device’s physical fit and connection requirements matter alongside its storage type.

Output devices

Output hardware presents computer results to a user or another system. Monitors, printers, speakers, headphones, and projectors are common examples. A monitor displays visual output, while speakers and headphones produce audio.

Communications and networking hardware

Routers, switches, and network interface cards (NICs) support connectivity and communication. A NIC connects a computer to a network; routers and switches help direct traffic between devices or networks. Networking is a functional category, while internal versus external describes where or how hardware is installed.

What is the difference between internal hardware and external peripherals?

Internal hardware is installed within a computer or device. Examples commonly include the CPU, system board, RAM, drives, and GPU. External hardware connects from outside the computer and can add input, output, storage, or other functions; keyboards, printers, and external drives are familiar examples.

This is a second classification, alongside the functional categories above. It is not an alternative list of functions: a GPU is processing hardware and may be internal, while a webcam is input hardware and may be external or built in. Hardware classifications also vary by context. Microsoft’s Windows hardware classes, for example, include device families such as input, storage, networking, video, cooling, and power.

What is the difference between hardware and software?

Hardware is the physical equipment; software is the programs and instructions that tell the equipment what to do. A keyboard is hardware, while the operating system or application receiving its input is software. A computer needs both: hardware provides the physical capabilities, and software directs how those capabilities are used.

How should you compare computer hardware?

Start with what the component needs to do, then check the requirements that affect whether it is suitable:

  • Storage: compare capacity, interface and form factor, performance needs, and cost.
  • Input or output peripherals: compare the intended task, connection type, compatibility, and accessibility needs.
  • CPU or GPU: compare workload, platform compatibility, and required performance.

Check the computer or component manufacturer’s compatibility information before buying or installing a part. A general category or technology label does not by itself confirm fit, connection support, or compatibility with a particular system.

Sources and classification differences

Functional groupings are common in educational explanations: the South African Department of Basic Education describes input, memory, output, and processing, while Intel Education groups essential computing functions as input, storage, processing, and output. IBM’s overview covers hardware and software distinctions, components, peripherals, and networking; HP also uses input, output, and input-output peripheral categories. The labels differ slightly, but the practical purpose is the same: identify what a physical component does and how it relates to the rest of the system.
