In a Stripe webhook, check event.type first. Then interpret event.data.object using the schema for that event. If the event is checkout.session.completed, inspect the Checkout Session’s mode and references to decide whether your application should follow its one-time-payment or subscription path.
Why the event type must come first
A webhook event tells you what happened and which Stripe resource its payload contains. For example, checkout.session.completed carries a Checkout Session, while payment_intent.succeeded carries a PaymentIntent. Those objects have different fields and meanings, so a handler should dispatch on event.type before reading fields specific to one resource.
This also avoids treating every event as a generic signal that “a payment happened.” One Stripe action can generate multiple events: Stripe gives subscription creation as an example that can trigger both customer.subscription.created and charge.succeeded. Each event represents a distinct part of the lifecycle and may call for different handling.
Choose the purchase path from the Checkout Session
Once the handler has established that the event is checkout.session.completed, it can read the object as a Checkout Session. The Session’s mode distinguishes the broad purchase flow; the Session also references the related Stripe resource. Stripe documents these modes in its Checkout Session API reference.

The product-specific action is your application’s responsibility: Stripe’s event model does not identify what your two products are or what fulfillment each requires. Keep the Stripe-level decision (which event and resource is this?) separate from the business-level decision (what should this customer receive?).
Build the handler in a safe order
- Verify the request. Use a Stripe library to validate the
Stripe-Signatureheader against the original, unmodified request body and the endpoint secret. Stripe requires the raw body for signature verification; parsing or transforming it first can make verification fail. Do not fulfill an order, grant access, or change records until verification succeeds. See Stripe’s webhook documentation. - Dispatch on
event.type. Route each supported event to code that understands that event’s object type. Ignore or safely acknowledge event types the endpoint does not use. - For Checkout completion, inspect the Session. Read
modeand the applicable references, then invoke the relevant application workflow. Do not assume every event payload is a Checkout Session. - Make processing idempotent. Record processed event IDs so a redelivery does not repeat fulfillment or grant access twice. Stripe also notes that separate Event objects can sometimes describe the same underlying change; when identifying those cases, use the data object’s ID together with
event.type. - Acknowledge promptly after safe acceptance. If work is longer-running, persist or queue it before returning a successful response, then process it asynchronously. This reduces the risk that a slow endpoint causes unnecessary retries.
Do not use arrival order as business logic
Stripe explicitly says it does not guarantee that events arrive in the order they were generated. A subscription-related sequence, for instance, can include customer.subscription.created, invoice.created, invoice.paid, and possibly charge.created; an endpoint must not assume a fixed arrival sequence.

Snapshot Event timestamps have second-level granularity, so different events can share the same timestamp. Do not use that timestamp to infer which event came first or whether another event has already been processed. Track event IDs for duplicate deliveries, and retrieve the current related object through Stripe’s API when needed information has not arrived in an event you have received.

Stripe’s Webhooks documentation, accessed October 4, 2026, says automatic live-mode delivery retries can continue for up to three days with exponential backoff. In sandbox mode, Stripe retries three times over a few hours. The same guide documents manual resend windows of up to 15 days from the Dashboard and up to 30 days from the CLI after event creation. These are Stripe’s documented operational limits and can change; consult the live webhook guide when setting support or recovery procedures.

Event structure is also tied to API versioning. Stripe says the account API version at the time an event occurs determines that event’s API version; changing the account version does not rewrite existing Event objects. Configure and test your handler for the version used by its event destination, and do not assume old event snapshots will change after an upgrade. See Stripe’s webhook versioning guidance.

Practical decision rule
- If you received
checkout.session.completed, interpret the object as a Checkout Session, then route by its mode and references. - If you received another event type, handle its documented object type rather than assuming it contains a Session or a generic product.
- Keep fulfillment rules specific to your own products, and make them safe against retries, duplicate events, and out-of-order arrival.
