Neither a TV nor a gaming monitor is always better for PS4. Choose a TV for couch seating and shared viewing, or a monitor for a desk and close seating. For responsiveness, compare measured input lag on the exact display in the mode you’ll use—especially Game Mode on a TV—rather than assuming one category is faster.

Your console matters, too: the original PS4 supports game output up to 1080p, while PS4 Pro can output 4K at up to 60 frames per second with compatible equipment. A 4K screen can display an original PS4’s lower-resolution signal, but it cannot make that console output 4K game video.

TV vs. monitor for PS4: the practical differences

Factor TV Gaming monitor
Typical fit Couch distance, living rooms and shared viewing. Desk setups, close seating and one-player use.
Input lag Varies by model and signal mode. Game Mode can reduce latency, though performance varies and may involve disabling features such as HDR. Sony’s PS4 Pro FAQ Must also be checked by exact model and mode. Do not assume every monitor is faster than every TV.
Resolution Both display types can work if they accept the console’s HDMI signal. Standard PS4 supports up to 1080p; PS4 Pro supports 4K output with compatible equipment. Sony’s PS4 FAQ and PS4 Pro FAQ Check that the monitor accepts the PS4 signal at the resolution and 60 Hz mode you intend to use.
Audio and ports Check the specific TV’s speakers, audio outputs and HDMI inputs. Check whether the specific monitor has speakers or audio output and enough ports for your setup.

These are setup considerations, not proof of a category-wide picture-quality or lag advantage. There are no universal TV-versus-monitor latency figures: Sony says latency differs by TV, and model-specific measurements are needed to compare actual displays.

Which should you choose for your setup?

Choose a monitor for a desk

A monitor is a natural starting point if you sit close to the screen and play at a desk. Compare the screen size and viewing comfort at your seating distance, then check independent measurements of input lag at the PS4’s useful signal mode, typically 60 Hz. Confirm the monitor accepts the console over HDMI and consider whether you need separate speakers or headphones.

Choose a TV for couch or shared play

A TV is often more convenient when you play from a couch, share the screen, or also use it for other living-room viewing. Look for a usable Game Mode and check independent, model-specific lag measurements. A TV is not automatically too slow for gaming: Sony says TV latency varies and that Game Mode is intended to reduce it, though results can depend on the set and its settings.

Does PS4 or PS4 Pro change the answer?

Original PS4

Sony’s 2013 PS4 FAQ lists 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p output over HDMI and says the original console does not support 4K game output. A good 1080p display is enough to show its listed maximum game output. A 4K TV or monitor can still accept and scale the lower-resolution signal, but choose 4K for other devices or future use—not to make the original PS4 render games in 4K.

PS4 Pro

PS4 Pro adds 4K output of up to 60 frames per second when connected to a supported 4K display with a Premium High Speed HDMI cable, according to Sony’s 2016 PS4 Pro FAQ. That describes the console’s output capability; it does not mean every game renders at native 4K. If 4K matters to you, verify the display input and every device in the HDMI path.

Will a 120 Hz or 144 Hz monitor help PS4?

Do not pay extra for a 120 Hz or 144 Hz label expecting PS4 games to run at those frame rates. Sony describes PS4 game capabilities up to 60 frames per second, and PS4 Pro’s 4K output is up to 60 frames per second. A higher-refresh-rate display may suit another device, but for PS4 verify that it accepts the console’s signal at the resolution and 60 Hz mode you want.

What to know about input lag and response time

Input lag is the delay between a console’s signal and the display showing it. Pixel response time describes how quickly pixels change between states. A “1 ms response time” specification is not an input-lag measurement, so it cannot establish how quickly a game responds on screen.

Compare independent measurements for the exact display and signal mode you will use, including Game Mode on a TV. Game Mode can reduce processing delay, but some TVs may change or disable features such as HDR in that mode. Sony recommends consulting professional and user reviews or testing when possible; its PS4 Pro FAQ notes that latency varies by TV.

PS4 HDR and PS4 Pro 4K compatibility

PS4 HDR requirements

For PS4 HDR, PlayStation’s HDR setup guidance calls for an HDR10-capable 2K or 4K TV, a Premium HDMI cable, HDR-enabled content and PS4 system software 7.0 or later. Connect the PS4 directly to the TV for HDR, use an HDR-capable HDMI input, enable any required enhanced-input setting, then set HDR and Deep Color to Automatic on the PS4. Check the TV manual for port-specific instructions. An HDR label alone does not guarantee a strong HDR picture; evaluate the exact display.

PS4 Pro 4K signal chain

Check the PS4 Pro, cable, display input and any receiver or HDMI switch in the chain for 4K and HDCP 2.2 support. PlayStation’s PS4 support guidance explains that a component without HDCP 2.2 can prevent 4K. Forcing HDCP 1.40 may restore an image, but can limit output to 1080p. Sony also notes that some BRAVIA inputs need Enhanced format enabled and that not all HDMI inputs support 4K HDR; see its 4K HDR troubleshooting instructions.

Check these details before buying or connecting

  1. Identify whether you have the original PS4 or PS4 Pro.
  2. Check the display manual for its supported resolution, HDR format and exact HDMI port capabilities.
  3. For PS4 HDR, confirm the supplied cable is suitable before replacing it; connect directly to the TV, enable HDR on the correct input and set HDR and Deep Color to Automatic on the console. PlayStation HDR setup
  4. For PS4 Pro 4K, check HDCP 2.2 support across the display and every intermediary device, as well as the cable. PlayStation PS4 support
  5. Turn on Game Mode if available, then compare independent input-lag measurements for the exact display and mode. Do not substitute response-time marketing for input-lag data.
  6. Compare screen size at your actual seating distance, audio options, ports, warranty and how you will use the display beyond PS4.
