That opens the Snipping Tool overlay, where you can capture a freeform area, rectangle, window, or the whole screen.
Before you start
- Your PC must have a dedicated Copilot key. Microsoft says these keys began appearing on some Windows 11 devices in 2024, but their hardware and firmware implementations differ.
- Install and open Microsoft PowerToys, then open PowerToys Settings.
- Keep PowerToys running after you create the mapping. Microsoft Learn says Keyboard Manager mappings apply only while PowerToys is running in the background and Keyboard Manager is enabled.
How to remap the Copilot key to Snipping Tool

Open Keyboard Manager
In PowerToys Settings, select Keyboard Manager.

Choose “Remap a shortcut”
Select Remap a shortcut, not Remap a key. A Copilot key may send a multi-key shortcut rather than behave as one ordinary key. Microsoft lists examples such as Win + C and Left-Shift + Windows key + F23, but your keyboard may use a different combination.

Record the physical Copilot key
In the shortcut input field, use the dialog’s key-recording control and press the physical Copilot key. Check what PowerToys records; do not assume that the examples above apply to your device.

Set the action to Windows logo key + Shift + S
In the destination or “To send” field, record or select Windows logo key + Shift + S. Microsoft documents this shortcut as the command that opens the Snipping Tool image-capture overlay.

Save and test
Save the remap, then press the Copilot key. The Snipping Tool overlay should appear. Select a capture mode, drag or select the area, and use the resulting preview to edit, save, or share the snip.
Why “Remap a shortcut” matters
The Copilot key is not implemented identically on every keyboard. Some devices expose it as a shortcut sequence, which is why recording the actual input from your own key is important. If PowerToys records several keys, map that combination under Remap a shortcut. A single-key remap is appropriate only when the device exposes the Copilot key as a single key code.

If the key still opens Copilot
Check Windows and manufacturer settings
Windows includes a Customize Copilot key on keyboard setting on supported devices, and some manufacturers provide their own remapping control. Check the Windows setting and the keyboard maker’s utility if available. Microsoft advises using either the Windows setting or the device setting when both are present, rather than configuring both at once.
Confirm PowerToys is active
Make sure PowerToys is running and Keyboard Manager is enabled. The mapping stops when PowerToys is closed or Keyboard Manager is disabled.

Check elevated applications
Keyboard Manager may not remap input in an application running with higher privileges when PowerToys is not also running with the required elevation. Microsoft also documents compatibility limitations with some applications, games, and software that uses low-level keyboard hooks.
Re-record the source shortcut
Delete the mapping and record the physical Copilot key again if the recorded combination does not match what happens when you press it. Firmware, keyboard layout, and device design can change the reported input.

What the screenshot shortcut does
Windows logo key + Shift + S opens the Snipping Tool overlay rather than immediately saving a full-screen image. From the overlay, choose:
- Rectangular snip for a selected rectangle.
- Freeform snip for an irregular shape.
- Window snip for one application window.
- Full-screen snip for the entire display.
After capture, Snipping Tool provides options to edit, save, and share the image.

Built-in alternatives if you do not need the Copilot key
You can use Windows’ screenshot shortcuts without installing or running PowerToys:

Important device-specific limits
Dedicated Copilot keys can replace keys such as Right Ctrl or the Context Menu key on some designs. The key’s reported shortcut and the available native customization options depend on the manufacturer, firmware, keyboard layout, and Windows version. The PowerToys method therefore has to be verified on each particular PC rather than assumed to work identically everywhere.
The Bottom Line
Record the shortcut your Copilot key actually sends in PowerToys, map it through Remap a shortcut to Windows logo key + Shift + S, and leave PowerToys running. If you do not need the Copilot key itself, use Windows logo key + Shift + S directly.
