A transcript API can take a YouTube URL or video ID and return text with timestamped segments in one request—but “any video” depends on the service’s access, available captions, and speech-recognition fallback. For retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), keep each segment’s start and end time with its text so an answer can point back to the relevant moment. Whether the request returns SRT, VTT, or JSON depends on the API; a request that triggers asynchronous transcription may return a job status instead of a finished transcript.
What one API call can—and cannot—promise
A transcript service may retrieve existing captions or transcribe audio, then return either plain text or timestamped segments. These are distinct processing paths: caption retrieval can be quick, while automatic speech recognition (ASR) may run asynchronously. A single request therefore does not always mean the transcript is immediately available in that response.
The title-matching DEV Community result describes RAG chunks carrying start and end times, but the article page was not accessible for verification. Its excerpt does not establish a particular implementation or output format. The separate YouTube-Transcript.dev API documentation demonstrates a YouTube URL or video ID request and timestamped transcript segments; it should not be treated as proof of the implementation in that DEV article.
Choose the right transcript route
Use an API that accepts the video and returns structured segments
Before integrating a transcript service, check its current documentation for accepted URL and video-ID forms, authentication, language controls, response structure, supported subtitle formats, rate limits, and asynchronous job handling. The YouTube-Transcript.dev example uses a bearer token and JSON, and documents timestamped transcript data. Its inspected documentation does not establish that this service emits SRT or VTT, so confirm format support rather than assuming it.

Its README, accessed in 2026, publishes these operational figures: native-caption retrieval is listed as one credit and 5–10 seconds; translation as one credit per 2,500 characters; and ASR as one credit per 90 seconds of audio, with an estimated 2–20 minutes. The README describes ASR as asynchronous. These are vendor-published figures, not independent measurements, and may change. It also documents batch requests of up to 100 videos for that project; that limit does not apply to transcript APIs generally.
Use Google’s caption download when you have authorized access
Google’s YouTube Data API provides a caption-track download endpoint, including SRT and VTT formats. It requires a caption-track ID and authorization; Google states, “This request requires authorization with at least one of the following scopes.” This is a way to download an authorized caption track, not an unrestricted transcript endpoint for arbitrary public videos. See Google’s caption download documentation.

Make a transcript request and handle its result
The following is the request shape documented by YouTube-Transcript.dev. Replace the example URL and token with the values for your video and account, and check the service’s current documentation for exact parameters and endpoint behavior.
curl -X POST "https://youtube-transcript.dev/api/v2/transcribe"
-H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"
-H "Content-Type: application/json"
-d '{"video_url":"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID"}'
The example endpoint and bearer-token pattern come from that service’s documentation, not from the inaccessible DEV Community article. The documented API accepts a YouTube URL or an 11-character video ID and can return transcript text with timestamped segments. Include language or transcript-source options only as supported by the service you select.

- Submit the video identifier. Send the documented request with the required authentication and any language or source options.
- Inspect the response status. If it contains completed transcript content, process the returned text and segments. If it indicates an ASR job is still running, follow the provider’s documented polling endpoint or webhook flow.
- Check the actual output format. Use SRT or VTT only when the chosen service explicitly supports and returns it. Otherwise, retain structured JSON or convert segments using a documented, correctly formatted conversion step.
- Validate the result. Confirm the transcript is non-empty, timestamps are present and ordered, and the requested language and video match your input.
Preserve timestamps for RAG citations
For a RAG pipeline, keep the segment’s text together with its start and end time when splitting or indexing a transcript. A text-only chunk can support search, but loses the direct connection to where the answer appears in the video. Timestamped chunks let an application attach a time reference to a retrieved passage and help a viewer locate the relevant moment.
Store the video identifier alongside each chunk as well. When generating an answer, use the retrieved segment’s timing to build a video-location reference only if your application’s linking method and the source data support it. Avoid treating chunk boundaries as proof that a statement is complete or accurate; the transcript itself can contain recognition errors, and the inspected sources establish no independent accuracy benchmark.

Choose output based on where the transcript will go
- SRT or VTT: Choose a subtitle file when a downstream player or editing workflow requires that format. Google documents both for authorized caption-track downloads. For another service, verify that it supports the requested format.
- Timestamped JSON: Choose structured segments when your application needs to search, chunk, translate, or cite transcript passages. Preserve timing fields through each transformation.
- Plain text: Use it when timing is unnecessary. It is not a substitute for timestamped chunks when RAG answers must point to moments in the video.
What changes when captions are unavailable
A provider may fall back to ASR when it cannot retrieve captions, if that fallback is enabled. That changes both latency and response handling: the API may return a processing status first, requiring a later poll or webhook, rather than the finished transcript in the initial response. Check whether fallback is enabled, how failures are reported, and how the provider signals completion before relying on a synchronous workflow.
Caption availability, the provider’s access, language support, and fallback behavior determine whether a particular video can be transcribed. The phrase “any YouTube video” should therefore be read as a goal, not a guarantee.
