To convert a known, publicly accessible webpage URL into Markdown for a RAG or agent pipeline, prepend https://r.jina.ai/ to the URL and send a request to the resulting address. For example: https://r.jina.ai/https://your.url. Jina Reader fetches the page and returns content formatted for language-model use. It is an extractor for URLs you provide—not a general web search or ranking service.

Convert a webpage URL to Markdown

Use the Reader URL pattern with the complete target URL after the prefix:

https://r.jina.ai/https://example.com/article

For a basic test, paste that address into a browser or call it from your application. The service fetches the target page and returns extracted content, commonly as Markdown. The [Reader API documentation](https://jina.ai/reader/) describes the URL pattern and request options; the [Jina Reader repository](https://github.com/jina-ai/reader) positions the output for LLM, agent, and RAG workflows.

The target must be publicly accessible to the service. Reader can also process PDFs and render pages that rely on client-side JavaScript, subject to the selected fetching behavior and the origin site’s access controls.

Choose fetching behavior and output controls

Reader supports request headers for controlling how it fetches and formats a page. Header names, defaults, and validation rules can change, so check the live [API documentation](https://jina.ai/reader/) before building a production integration.

Control What it does When it matters
X-Engine direct performs a plain HTTP fetch. The default browser route renders pages so client-side JavaScript can run. cf-browser-rendering is documented as experimental. Try a rendering route when page content depends on JavaScript; use direct fetching when a plain HTTP response is sufficient.
X-Respond-With Selects alternate response forms. Use it when your downstream system needs a format other than the standard response.
Selector headers Use CSS selectors to retain or remove portions of page content. Useful when navigation, footers, or other irrelevant sections should be excluded or when only a specific region is wanted.
x-json-schema or x-instruction ReaderLM-v2 can return structured JSON according to a schema or instruction. Use when your pipeline expects structured fields rather than Markdown. Confirm current syntax and constraints in the API docs.

Extraction quality depends on the page and fetching mode. Validate representative pages from your own sources, especially for dynamic layouts, before treating the output as a stable input contract.

Reader is for a known URL; search is a separate workflow

Reader takes a URL you already know and retrieves its content. If the task is to discover pages from a query, Jina documents a separate search endpoint at s.jina.ai, which searches and returns content from search results. Do not treat the Reader prefix as a search engine: it does not find or rank pages on its own. The repository README documents the public search endpoint as a query-prefixed URL, while the API documentation covers Reader and search behavior.

Check rate limits and token billing before scaling

Jina’s published Reader table, checked on October 3, 2026, lists the following request limits. These are a dated snapshot; the vendor says limits may be updated.

Access tier Published Reader limit Qualification
No API key 20 requests per minute Published by Jina AI in its 2026 table.
Free or paid API key 500 requests per minute Published by Jina AI in its 2026 table.
Premium API key Up to 5,000 requests per minute Published by Jina AI in its 2026 table; “up to” is not a guaranteed workload capacity.

The same table reports an average latency of 7.9 seconds. This is a published average, not a response-time guarantee; actual latency depends on the engine and target page. Reader limits are enforced by requests per minute and tokens per minute, whichever threshold is reached first. Usage tokens are counted for Reader API requests, and authenticated usage is token-priced based on content length. Jina says basic Reader use is free, while an API key provides higher limits and token-based billing. Its page also states that each new API key includes 10 million free tokens. Treat that allowance and billing details as changeable terms, and verify current limits and pricing on the [official pricing and rate-limit page](https://jina.ai/reader/).

Know what Reader cannot fetch

Reader is intended for publicly accessible URLs; local HTML files are not supported. A target website can still block the request, and paying for an API key does not grant access to blocked content. Jina’s Reader FAQ states: “Reader does not actively circumvent or bypass any website defense mechanisms, anti-bot systems, or access controls.” Use only pages you are authorized to access, and account for the site’s terms and third-party intellectual-property rights. See the [Reader API FAQ](https://jina.ai/reader/) for the vendor’s access-policy details.

Hosted API and self-hosted models are different choices

Calling the hosted Reader API is not the same as deploying Reader’s extraction models yourself. If you self-host ReaderLM-v2 or jina-vlm, Jina’s documentation lists them under CC-BY-NC 4.0 and says commercial production use requires a commercial license. Jina identifies Jina On-Prem, sold by Elastic since August 10, 2026, as its commercial on-prem licensing route. Confirm current license and sales-channel terms with the [official documentation](https://jina.ai/reader/) before committing to a deployment.

The ReaderLM-v2 paper authors describe a 1.5-billion-parameter model that supports documents up to 512K tokens and report benchmark results against larger named models on their curated evaluation. Those are claims from the paper, not independent workload benchmarks; they do not establish how the hosted API will perform on your own pages or costs.

Decide whether Reader fits your pipeline

For a prototype that needs text from a known public page, the URL-prefix pattern is a quick way to test the workflow. Before using it at production scale, evaluate the factors that affect your particular application:

  • Throughput: Compare your expected request and token volume with the current limits for your API-key tier.
  • Content behavior: Test pages with JavaScript rendering, PDFs, and the layout patterns your pipeline will encounter.
  • Extraction scope: Decide whether a full-page response is suitable or whether selectors or structured output are needed.
  • Access: Confirm you have permission to retrieve the target pages and plan for origins that deny access.
  • Deployment and licensing: Compare hosted token-based usage with the operational requirements and commercial terms of self-hosting.

The official sources describe controls, limits, and licensing routes, but do not establish an independent benchmark for a particular workload. Measure the pages and volumes that matter to your system rather than assuming a published average predicts your results.
